I believe originally it was a partnership between Charlie and his brother Reg who started selling the original Watkins Rapier guitars at their record shop called 'Watkins Electric Music'. It was here where Charlie started working on his electronic designs.
I knew Charlie Watkins personally, more towards his later life, a great family friend. My university dissertation was dedicated to his work history. His contribution to the sound industry was unmatched, initially successful in guitar amplification with amps such as the Watkins Dominator and Westminster. He then developed the portable tape echo unit, known as the Watkins Copicat, this immediately became a worldwide revelation. Thirdly, he was known as 'The Father of British PA' due to his invention of the WEM speaker columns, slave amps and audiomaster mixer, used for bands such as Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Beatles and many others! The limited time I knew Charlie, he always remained a humble and generous person.

No wonder it sounds so good it has Allen Entwistle designed PU's which are not dissimilar to the Gibson Firebird PU's. You get the full sound of a humbucker but with the chime of a vintage Strat. Killer combination. The vintage whammy has been updated for reliable tuning and you get a Graphtech nut and Wilkinson tuners to ensure no binding at the headstock. The look is the closer, different but not weird. Reasonably priced as well. What's not to like?

In 1964 all I could afford was a second hand Watkins Rapier 22. It had two single coils , a primitive tremelo and a compensated knife edge bridge ( so you could hear the string winds graunching over it ) and a neck with no adjustable truss rod, cheap machine heads and a very strange wiring harness. Having said that, it served me well for several years and I still have it in storage. These new models look very close to the originals although they have done a job on the headstock which is better than they were. I dont remember there being any models with humbuckers back in the sixties, they were all rectangular single coils even on the 33. These sound really good and obviously with the modern production methods, truss rod and tunematic bridge they will be a huge improvement.
Great video as always guys. Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dad was a leftie and had a Rapier 22 back in the 60s. I had read that Watkins was quite passionate about offering left handed guitars when other manufacturers tended not to back then. (Although not too different these days!). My dad passed away recently and we got his old Rapier cleaned up. Agree with previous comments it was very cheaply built, felt like a piece of balsa wood it was so light. My dad didn’t call it “the plank” for nothing 🤣

I like these designs. They remind me of some of those more experimental catalogue guitars from the 70's that had a lot of strange pickup and body shape combinations. I would want the sunburst one simply because it reminds me of that whole era of guitar design (but without the sloppy quality control of the originals).

I remember these as pretty hard to play Strat clones for about £30-£35 back in 1960-61. Back then if you had one of these this was about as good as you could get - Strats were about £150-160 - if you ever saw one - then there were quite a lot of Strats by 1963/4 but since they were associated with Cliff and the Shads and were hugely out of fashion in W London - you could have picked up a 62 for £50-75 in Marshalls! But Teles were holding their price as you'd see Jimmy Page playing one - and Clapton and Richards.

The slider switches used to break in no time at all. It was horrible to play but did have a sound of its own. I bought one because of the price. I do love the toaster pickups. Unusually, it was in Ice Blue, similar to the 33 Lee is holding, which was only available on export models. I have a 1964 Rapier 33. It's pretty complete with the strange buttons and vibrato. The lettering has gone from the headstock, but you can still see a 'shadow' of the original transfer. You can tell when the captain isn't really in to a guitar brand. The fact that he compared it to a danelecto really puts the nail in the coffin 😂
