I saw a video featuring Alice Walker where she outed Tracy as her lover.Tracy never discussed her sexual orientation publicly.Alice just name dropped Tracy’s name to appear trendy and cool.I’ve always thought Alice was very crass for outing Tracy without her permission.I’m not even going to discuss Alice’s relationship with her daughter. It’s just too sad.
I hope Tracy is happier with her current partner.Tracy deserves happiness because her songwriting and singing has brought happiness to millions around the world!

I just came across that information and wonder wth was Alice Walker thinking? Then as I thought I was like hey Alice was like 20 yrs Tracey's senior. Did she impress herself upon a young impressionable Tracey? Alice was old enough and mature enough to know not to do that. Just one more reason to dislike her even more, not that I need any.

This is the first I've heard of Tracy Chapman and Alice Walker being an item. I had no idea. But it was bold and scandalous that a mother would steal her daughter's lover. But even worst, the lover allowed herself to be taken showed she had no respect for feelings and emotions that was involved.

My problem is Alice is name dropping to add something more scandalous to her story /book. Tracey has never acknowledged this and it is her story to tell. Like the authentic woman she has always been she just hasn’t commented on the gossip, who knows if that makes it true or not. I do know if you have to put someone else out there to make your story great it’s not a great story in the first place. 🤷🏽

Yes, I have known that Tracy is gay & had a relationship with Alice in the 90’s, doesn’t make me love her less. My husband knows I have girl crush on Tracy and have since I first heard and saw her, I couldn’t get her 1st album fast enough in the late 80’s. I didn’t know about Rebecca or that Alice Walker even had a daughter, seems kind of petty to close her cafe & sell everything, but I don’t know the story, so best mot to judge.

Just to be advised this comment is going to take an unexpected turn. This song came out when I was 26 yrs old and it was the year that I contemplated as a 100% gay Black male coming out but I did not because I was raised traditional Catholic and back in the 80s that was a huge no no although we knew as young folks that Catholic priests were molesting boys as we knew it in grade school but the church covered it up or there was not much covering up as we found out later it was an open secret and some just went along with it. (Movie "Doubt" starring Merryl Streep) captured what life was being raised in a traditional Catholic setting and Catholic priest molestation was in high gear.. Back to Tracey Chapman. Having that song Fast Car and that album come out really gave me a sense that I could do something meaningful with my life because I led a tortured life knowing I was a young Black gay male and by all accounts relatively academically strong who still attracted the opposite sex but was only attracted to the same sex but because of the Catholic teaching I dare not act upon those feelings although the ones teaching it (the Priests) were molesting so many boys back then I am 100% some of the parents were not naive to this. So what I did to quench my curiosity I would hang out in the 24 hr adult bookstores that were really popular in the 80s in the US and they usually were located off of beaten path because a lot of seedy things went on in and around there mostly by men looking to have anonymous sex with other men, who were either married or either trade (men who do not identify as gay and are usually hyper masculine and athletically built and in a committed relationship with the opposite sex and may have a kid or 2 and looking to trade sex for something of value, like money, food, a place to stay for the night or all of the above). Also I went to look at the gay smut magazines and I could not believe what I was seeing. There was also usually a spacious viewing area in the back part of the store with glory holes in each booth where you can pay .25 to continuously plunk in the viewer and watch any type of sexual movie you wanted and also to have anonymous sex. It was in the fall of 1990 when I was propositioned by a white guy who had offered me money to come back to his place and we would have sex. (which I had no plans of doing), but the one thing that stuck out to me was how persistent he was. However, just to pass the time a way I spoke to him and led him to believe i would meet him late Sunday night because he works 3rd shift but would not be going in that night. I agreed and did not show up to meet him because I truly never planned to so I ghosted him. When I came back to the bookstore one of the regulars I had befriended told me the white guy had came into the bookstore and was looking around. I had already told him the guy had propositioned me and we had a nickname for him that was not too flattering but I can't recall but I do know he seemed intoxicated when I spoke to him but I did not smell any beer or liquor. Time went on and and hanging in the bookstore became a regular thing for me and other gays in the 80s and the trade boys looking to make money or whatever else that was available to do. I remember having the Tracey Chapman cassette playing in my Sony Walkman cassette player and her songs were playing in some of the adult bookstores. So fast forward the next summer I wake up to go to work but I let my tv play for awhile without watching but just listened as I lay in bed with my back turn giving myself 10 more minutes before I got up to get ready for work. As i am listening to the broadcast I remember back then CNN was called Headlines news and they were talking about this apartment building where they found some body parts of men and was still investigating what exactly it was they had discovered but assured there would updates during the day. I am listening to this with my back still turned thinking it was in Chicago or New York because they believed they had stumbled onto a serial killer and usually i am thinking that type of stuff is for the big city dwellers. It was not until they said where I lived did i jump out of bed in disbelief seeing them taking this huge white tub out where apparently body parts were in. But then the most shell shocking thing happened next. The person they had under arrest they showed his picture on tv and to my horror it was literally the same person who tried to now I know lure me to come to his place the previous year and I started to vomit uncontrollably. It was no other than Jeffrey Dahmer. Some people on social media may try to discount my story and I am perfectly ok with that. I never thought I would be able to share my story in anonymously so when the internet evolved and then they started doing the Dahmer series it became therapeutic for me because i had only told literally 2 people about this in my life and none of them were my family members. But I have to be reasonable to about something. I was approached by Dahmer and knew I was not going to go back to a total stranger's house which was really common to do back then, just like hitch hiking was socially acceptable back in the 60s and 70s. There is no way I was the only fortunate person to escape Dahmer's grasp and reign of terror. I am sure there are others who were lucky too. Told you it would take an unexpected turn. I am thinking one day I will get pas this but I made it my point to not watch any of the series because i had unknowingly interacted with some of his victims too just in a casual conversation in the adult bookstore. Thank you Tracey Chapman for lifting me up.

Wow! I did watch the series and I'm so glad you had enough sense not to be lured by him!!🤢 And as a mom of young men, I'm so sorry for whatever happened to you in the Catholic Church😭 Proud to know that you stand on the principles of who you are and I pray you continue to live a safe & prosperous life!🙏😇

As I got older and a little more mature and wiser to life I started putting things into a more macro- perspective as opposed to mico. Then it dawned on me that there is no way I am the only one that had the good fortunate of not falling prey to him. I whole heartedly believe in the 6 degrees of separation. Case in point, the woman and niece who called the cops on Dahmer when the little boy was outside naked, her name was Brenda Cleveland I believe, who has since passed on I met her at one of the places I had worked. By then everyone knew who she was, she was a very spiritual really attractive lady but a lot of people do not know that she went through survivor's guilt or PTSD because she really felt she failed the little because she always thought she could have done more to say him, although the cops threatened to arrest her and her niece. Also with that, if the cops had just ran Dahmer's name they would have discovered right then and there he was still on probation for molesting the same little boy's older brother when the older brother was 13 yrs old. Dahmer only served 1 yr was out on good behavior for the rest being spent on probation while he was out killing people. Even more interesting is the Father/Daughter lawyer defense team for Dahmer I also met. I had only met the daughter because by then she was on news and she came into a place where i worked during the trial and I assisted her and ensured not to mention the trial. It was a high end store and usually got high end customers. After she left we talked about it but it was evident she was using that time as down time. And contrary to what they were saying about the Damher building it was not unkempt or seedy. It was a very pristine and huge building to the point where some of the residents may not have encountered one another that is how big it was. I actually lived in the area 4 years before Dahmer. And the area was a mixture of working class people and college students because one of the flagship schools Marquette University is in the area and the building I lived in at the time was all students, including myself. But I get why some things were changed because it was for the artistry of it. Life can be really weird at times but it is also a beautiful thing. @@shantwhite1981

Oh my goodness, your story reads just as interesting as a movie or book! Having grown up around that time, plus working in behavioral health, I can clearly see the point in what you’re saying about Ms. Cleveland. There’s absolutely no way one can endure an experience so horrific and not have such deep traumatic effects!! And yes, about the complex, I sincerely believe it was not as bad as they depicted it in the movie. Because there’s no way multiple people could be that close and not smell the stench of those decomposed bodies; It was portrayed as only coming through her vents🙄. But of course, that’s just “made for TV”. Again, I commend you for having the wisdom to listen to your conscience and avert his advances. I hope you’ve had the proper support throughout the years to process and work through the near-miss that could’ve gone in a different direction…Many blessings and Take care my friend!🤗

In the Eyes of GOD, this type of relationship is forbidden. Regardless of the Music or Plays they made their Relationship is not of GOD.

Tracy dated Alice's daughter first and then started dating Alice. One might say, Alice took Tracy away from her daughter Rebecca.

Tracy must have dated them at the same time because why would she take the money back after her and Alice broke up that makes no sense.

So much pollution. Perversion and lust are detestable to holiness. The Holy Spirit flees from such that are therein involved. Filthiness and putrefaction are all what lust and perversion are about, and it is an abomination in the presence of God !
The blind and ignorant will never understand mysteries of the Most High. Holiness is the key to salvation !

Is Oprah in this lesbian triangle? Is that why she keeps reviving The Color Purple? Everybody knows lesbians exist. What I don't understand is why we have to be reminded of it repeatedly. Who is getting what out of this?
