Well, diggy duststar, with all my respect to your message, I would not jump to that conclusion, mixing language / culture and music, as one of its expressions, with the essence of what you're implying. Nobody denies the impact of Vikings on all Northern European history. But conquests don't mean the language of the territories where peoples lived, were giving names to their rivers, mountains, hills, sang their songs... For instance, England was invaded by Vikings a couple of times, so, do we conclude that English people were waiting for Vikings to start speaking the old English? The rise of Vikings was mainly due to the feudal reunifications of the tribes of what we know today Norway, Sweden which expressed itself in conquests, travels... The same phenomenon happened with Mongolian and Northern Chinese tribes in X-XI cent which resulted in the conquest on the vast territories in Asia, Central Asia and up to the Carpathian Mountains. Does it mean that Ukrainians are singing the songs of those conquerors who remained much more involved in the life of the pra-Slavic tribes than any Vikings? With regards to Daja-Braja (I follow the pronunciation in Spanish): - the musical and, especially verbal themes of the songs they are singing are typically Ukrainian and express the rich variety of the Ukrainian regions geographically and linguistically: the Ukrainian language has a lot of dialects. So we can find here the music and rhythms of Kozak proto-state of XV - XXVI cent. ("Kozak"), pagan themes - Ivana Kupala - that go as deep as the pre-Christian Rus (the old name of Ukraine; Kievan Rus was Christianized in 988, long before Vikings were on service of Kiev princes!), of the period of religious confrontations on the territory of Ukraine (Catholics versus Orthodox believers): - "Vaniusha". The latter engraved in the people's memories the phenomenon of what we call today a "Post-stress syndrome": the hero of this song, at his return home from a bloody war, kills all his family...
