This is a rare combination of pure talent, practice, experience, and musical/rhythmical ability combined with influences from all over Africa and Eastern Europe mixed with trance music and folk music and delivered through a mesmerising performance ! How am I only just hearing about them ?
I was at that concert in Roskilde and it is one of my highlights of whole festival. A nice summer day afternoon, a relaxing and happy athmosphere. As usual at festivals people come and go during the concerts and you see something special is happening when the crowd is getting bigger and bigger and only few are leaving. This exactly happened during this wonderful concert of DakhaBrakha. At the beginning we were just few in the audience but at the end the huge tent and the area around was full of people who were celebrating the band. I never forgot this concert and purchased also some CDs of them and I am so happy that you share this video on youtube so I can enjoy it again from time to time. Thank you so much for this very special moment. Yesterday I found out that you are going to come to my city in May and - voilà - I have 2 tickts now for my wife and me and I am very looking forward to that. Wow, spectacular performance. Everyone is at the top of their abilities. The performances of "Yahgudky" and "Baby" are transcendent. Even though I've heard these songs a hundred times, I'm still so taken by the sheer artistry and intensity, I'm moved like nothing else, and music has been a vital part of my life for 50 years.
At first glance I assumed they were an ethnic novelty act. In the next ten minutes my thinking migrated from, 1) they are a Ukrainian ethnic novelty act, to 2) wow, they are really good, even though I don’t understand the Ukrainian singing, then 3) OMFG, they are truly amazing and what they are doing is novel, innovative, and exceptionally creative, and finally settled at 4) they are the best musical ensemble I’ve ever heard, four world-class musicians working at a peak of creativity. This cascade of realization happened in about 10 minutes. It was one of the phenomenal moments of my life.
You need to come back to Lotus Festival in Bloomington, Indiana! That's where I first heard you play and I've been an admirer since. Is there a reason you haven't returned? Please let me know and I will talk to anyone here about that. My heart aches to hear you live!!!
They really seem as to be going full-out. Everyone is performing at an impossibly high level. It's performances like this that prove they have no equal live. The vocals are music of the gods. Was Roskilde their first big European festival date? They certainly seem like they're trying to impress. Must have been intimidating to be scheduled after them. They set an impossibly high bar. Nobody else in the world is this good.
