  • In the first of our “Brazilian edition” episodes (our host Nadia is currently in Brazil at the sanctuary), we pick up from last time and continue to talk about Mara’s health. While her GI issues seemed to be getting better and her poop improving in quantity, size & consistency, she started to go off her food. After weeks of limited food intake, Mara laid down, making a large round shape in her abdomen visible.
With both Bambi and Rana at her side, Mara recovers and is able to stand again. Today, she is doing well but, as Kat explains, she is one of the elephants they monitor the closest. Nadia also offers listeners an insight into her daily work at the sanctuary, giving you all a look behind the scenes.

How fantastic that you are in Brazil Nadia!!! Enjoy!
This makes a superb episode extra superb! A lovely follower has already commented on how clever Elephants are at masking pain. I'll always believe Pocha hung on until she was certain Guille would be OK. And, although all too briefly, she was also able to experience Paradise on earth. And it was absolutely worth it! Oh Mara. Another Beautiful, Brave, Super-intelligent lady. Bless her. Thank you Scott and Kat. You are incredible people! Take Care all of you!

This podcast is such a great educational resource, I’ve learnt so much about elephants, and the GSE sanctuary, thank you so so much. I must have missed the worrying times spoken of, I had no idea that Mara was so delicate. Very very well done for working so full on with her. I can understand why you moniter her so closely because elephants are so good at masking their discomfort and indeed as we saw from Pocha appearing absolutely normal when in fact they are terribly sick. I do hope that the strange lump you saw in Mara’s intestine has gone, dissolved maybe..? Well done Nadia for working through the heat, I hope you had a nice time in the fridge! Will be tuning in again in a couple of weeks for the next episode. Thanks again!

Wow, I never even thought about all of this. It must be incredibly concerning to see an animal withering away and not be able to do much for it. But Mara tried to fix the problem herself and did it!! Thank you for this video. Very interesting. I'm happy and relieved Mara is better.

Gracias.Mara en mi❤.

They are checked, at least yearly, for parasites, and Mara is clear. Parasites generally would not present that way. And, although Mara was in Buenos Aires Ecoparque for some time, she was also in multiple other places throughout her life, and as she traveled with circus, she would have drank different water from many many places, and had dietary adjustments. We mentioned what we thought it might be, but we will only definitely know upon necropsy.
