  • In this episode Dr Catel investigates both the Bight of Benin and the Bight of Biafra discussing the various powers that existed during that time. Discussing the oracle of Arochukwu, as well as ports in Badagry, lagos, calabar, dahomey and bonny.
BNH is going to be like a crash course (or an edutainment series) on Nigerian history, but along the way will also touch on other parts of West African history.

Just to point out fact, in 1942 all the traditional rulers in the west had a meeting In Benin Kingdom and there was no traditional ruler called OBA only the OBA of Benin in Lagos they have the Eleko of Eko, in Ibadan they have Olu Ibadan, in Abeokuta you have Alake of Egba Land, In Oyo they have Alafin of Oyo In Ilesha they have Owa Obokun of Ilesha, so the title OBO only belongs to the Benin and no one else. Arochukwu is not pure igbo. They are a mixed half ibo half ibbio peoples. If you know the igbo religion of odinala slavery was forbiden and Igboland was a haven for runaway slaves. Those who took part in the Aro confederacy were of mixed origins and more or less not completely culturally Igbo. So no core Igbo people did not sell slaves

In the 17th century there was no Lagos. It is the binis edo people in today Nigeria that founded Lagos and named it ' Eko ' meaning in Benin language a kind of a small house build for temporary stay for business trading and other things. This build by Benin traders that where trading with the Europeans who first came to Benin kingdom to buy slaves and other antiquities.
So Mr MAN please stop saying what you don't know or refusing to say the truth because of personal and tribal interests.
OBA is not a Yoruba name. Oba is a Benin, edo name. In the 1940s and 50s there was nothing like oba in yoroba land. It is all imitation of Benin. There is no oba like the oba of Benin Edo people of Nigeria.
No wonder the British heard about Benin wealth and antifacts and to fight the Benins and stole them.

Today Benin republic adopted the name from Benin city in to edo state in Nigeria. Yoruba people stop misleading your kind. Educated illiterate that is what you guys are. Envious of the Benin history, I guess

The Biggt of Benin refers to the Benin Kingdom in Nigeria. One of the Kings of Benin Kingdom founded Lagos and called it Eko. His Son -Addo was the first Oba of Lagos and the Oba of Benin was the Chief slave master or seller. Republic of Benin changed the names from Dahomey to Benin taking it from the Bight of Benin. Thanks
