Yes new downtown arena for the Wemby era! Hemisfair was for George Gervin, Alamo dome was for David Robinson, ATT was for Tim Duncan. For those who aren't from the city, the Att center was supposed to help the economy in the eastside of the city develop (which is one of the worst areas in the city for development) back when it was planned but fast forward 22 years later absolutely NOTHING has changed and improved therefore no growth was ever made. That project is over time to move on downtown where there's plenty of economic growth opportunities with all the stores, restaurants, attractions etc. available.
I absolutely despise attending events at SBC and AT&T. So fucking boring with hardly any amenity options to make it a palatable experience, then the venue has the nerve to not allow outside concessions.
Actually it has changed a bit.... they have been building new homes all in the eastside and white folks rarely drove through the eastside. Since they built the AT&T center... now the eastside becoming even more diverse and white folks actually live on the eastside now. A white guy in the military literally live across the street from my grandma house. The downtown area is basically on the eastside of San Antonio also if we are being honest. It is a slow process, but I still see the eastside developing.
@@MarquisVegan I lived in the eastside right by it for about half my life on new Braunfels street and can confirm new homes being built but when it comes to actual businesses that they planned to come after constructed, all that it's gotten in 22 years was a dang corner store. And yeah if it was constructed next to or on the Alamodome area as initially planned it could've still been an eastside location by downtown that could've done a better job with development but they went cheap for something that never paid off.
@@July9326 I can agree to that... it definitely seems like an underfunded project and they been working on that same road on New Braunfels Street forever now. But then again there is a lot of things being underfunded even with the Texas government especially. Hopefully this time they can execute on this project much better that can help boost the economy massively within the next decade.
The Spurs arena is one of the most beautiful arenas I’ve seen in the inside. The outside looks like a massive warehouse! The exterior is horrible. They should just get a new arena downtown and actually spend the money to attract great players. Don’t be building horrible arenas just to save money San Antonio
The AT&T center isn’t horrible..but in comparison to other arenas I’ve been to..it’s not up to par..plus it’s in a really crappy part of town with nothing going outside of it besides a parking lot
Target Center is still going 33 years strong! (Not a good stadium but let’s not act like it’s a dumb like media wants to say. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got a new stadium in the upcoming years.)
It's not about keeping Wemby, it's about striking while the iron is hot. While San Antonio is the most excited they have been about the team since the 2014 title. Right now they might be able to win a vote for a hotel/car rental tax increase to gift the team a new building just like the AT&T Center was paid for with. Spurs have a lease with Bexar County through 2032 but I imagine they'd like to have a new arena ready for 2028 or 2029 and then they'd just buy out the Bexar County lease early. The city of San Antonio screwed up in 1999 when they wanted to propose a sales tax increase and fold an expansion to the city's Convention Center into it, which is why the Spurs went with Bexar County's plan. I honestly don't care where they put a new arena as long as there is good park & ride service to it. Not even the hookers lining up New Braunfels Ave after the games can cheer me up from the rage of trying to get out of the AT&T Center parking lot when I drive to a game.
This is a very good idea. I'm an lifetime Australian Spurs fan and went to the two round 1 games vs DEN in 2019 at AT&T. The inside of the stadium is fine, nice even. The outside is obviously hardly modern, but the bigger issue imo is its location. It's a bit in the middle of nowhere, and (with all due respect to the locals) arguably not the nicest area in SA (we stayed in Jefferson Heights just over the railway). I think having a modern arena in a more central commercial area would really benefit the SAS franchise and the city as a whole as it continues to grow. It would really help legitimise the longevity of SA as the true home of the Spurs with Austin potentially representing some competition as a more viable marketplace moving forward. Wemby probably increases the need to consider this in a shorter timeframe but I'm sure it was already on the minds of ownership.
Bring it on! Build across the Alamodome where that outdated Institute is , other than that location I don’t see anywhere else downtown where it would be feasible
The Oak View group who wants to privately want to build an NBA only arena / campus in Las Vegas also renovated the new Seattle arena Climate Pledge Arena. Build a downtown arena and let the rodeo enjoy the current arena. No more rodeo road trips for the Spurs !! Football fans in San Antonio need to show they can support the UFL Brahmas and show the NFL something positive. Empty seats at the Brahmas games will be bad for SA
While the current venue in a vacuum is totally fine, it's located in a terrible part of the city that's never been gentrified with the typical plethora of amenities more than 20 years after opening. While the bus transit is also fine there, downtown is just superior in every way as it has the most reliable bus transit in the city (although the entire system is notoriously underfunded), as well as the amenities and walkability.
To all those uneducated people out there, the SPURS lease ends at the AT&T Center in 2032. It'll be 30 years old by then!! Therefore we have 9 years to plan, design, fund, and build this new arena. As Ginger stated the SPURS are being proactive. This gives the SPURS and SA roughly 6 years to save money for this thing. Likely using the hotel visitor tax and rental car fees over local taxes. Please stop crying, you're not being screwed by this.
