      at 4:58 I find interesting how you pick the central tile for white balance. a lot of official X-rite videos say to use the top one (the whitest) but apparently the one to use is the second from the top, as it's the one that corresponds to the neutral grey card. go figure. quite confusing

    Thank you for this, Chris. No worries about the audio; we’re here for the content rather than the production values. I, too, would love to know how to use the color calibration with Capture One. I noticed that the Spyder app lets you choose the output of the preset to Lightroom, Phocus or ACR. I would have no clue how to output to C1.

    Having watched this great video several times (thanks again) and having read the user manual(!), there are two differences: (1) To set your white balance, click on the second (not third) patch in the E column (which is 20% grey). (2) To adjust the white (E1), don't move the whites slider, but move the exposure slider (to correct for wrong exp osure). Small differences, but they are the whole point of this exercise. -- And of course you don't need to spend all the money to get the right white balance. This product will actually help you to get the colors(!) right, i.e. to correct the "color science" of your camera to a standard.

    I think everyone here would agree that your perception that your videos aren't polished enough is your personal need for "perfection". I get that. But, I also think that some of what we love is the crazy, zany, stuff falling kind of in the moment atmosphere you've had in your videos. It's very real. And, as a technology teacher I know that my students don't like my class because I'm polished or perfect for them. It's because most of the time they have a sense that the class is fun and I'm goofy. Obviously, your content and teaching a fantastic. That goes without saying. I'm just saying, don't get too polished. We like you the way you are. Have a rockin' weekend!

    Another great use of a colour chart is to create colour profiles for your legacy lenses that can be dialled into editing software to take the guesswork out of balancing colour in your images. Enjoying the videos and hope you had a good break/workspace rebuild.

  • @TheDOS
    @TheDOS ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I used to worry more about this kinda stuff until a complementary lesson you gave on exposure compensation. There you pointed out how “proper” compensation would try to make almost everything look like it was in daylight. But that’s not what we are trying to capture in the moment most often, if it’s dusk, then you might need to set exposure down a stop or two. Similar with colors, it doesn’t need to be perfect, just needs to fit what you felt it looked like. All that said, being slightly colorblind does reduce once confidence when doing color adjusting without reference. I will say, compared to older Canon DSLR, Fuji out of camera colors are so much more pleasing that I rarely mess with them unless I’m processing for a print or something more serious.

    Great video. Worth pointing out that the X-Rite software generates a camera profile, the Datacolor software generates a user preset. As far as I can tell the camera profile can only be applied to images taken with that same camera, but the user preset can be applied to any image.

    Chill out indeed. Another massively informative video. Only really getting into exploring the full potential of color grading by shooting Flog (on an XT3). This has been very helpful in learning more and taking the mystery out of the technical.
    Would love if you made a video at some stage on the different powerbank (with power delivery) options that exist for Fuji cameras. Anker are not readily available here in Ireland and wonderred if other reliable brands exist that can be used in their place. But I was made to believe that using brands not specified by Fuji could pose a risk to the actual camera.
    I have looked online about this, but there's a real paucity of information out there on this subject. I have an event coming up in the summer where I might be on the go for up to 12 hours shooting, so would love to find a solution that didn't involve having to carry a million little bateries with me.

    I'd love to see monitor calibration explained. I have a 16" Macbook Pro hooked up to a 27" BenQ monitor- both high end screens that are supposed to be great for color accuracy. But when I close the lid on the MacBook to use it in clamshell mode, the BenQ color changes drastically. So beyond simply using the color checker, how do you control for which monitor a profile is being applied to? Keep up the awesome work!

    • @martinyip65
      @martinyip65 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't get the DataColor one to work in C1...the software only gives you a choice of Lightroom or 'Phocus' which I believe is PhaseOne's program for their Medium format cameras.
      Also, the ColorChecker makes a colour profile which resides in the profile option of Lightroom, whereas the DataColor one makes a preset which resides in the preset options.
      I agree with pal2tech in that DataColor's software is clunky and rather primitive. I hope they improve it soon.

      Last time I checked Datacolor still didn't support CaptureOne and this remains the number one complaint of using DataColor. I personally much prefer the DataColor ecosystem of devices in general, but as with most pro studios, can't switch because of this. Calibrite creates an actual ICC profile that fits seamlessly into C1. Let us know if you ever learn of any progress on DataColor's part.

    Question re tonal range: I used a Calibrite i1Pro2 photo spectrometer to measure the tonal ranges of several versions of the Calibrite/XRite targets. They were all about 96% L* for the white and about 9-12% for the Black. Admittedly, this was the Lab scale. How did you arrive at using the RGB values of 90% and 5-10% in lightroom? And, should I not set the whites and blacks in the target equal to what the photometer gives me for the settings?

    Unfortunately for some reason the calibrite color checker passport doesn’t work with Fujifilm Provia profile, I noticed it only works with the other film simulations like classic chrome etc

    Very useful video to raise the awareness, many thanks. To be completed by others? What about same approach/video with Capture One 23, ie with WB & smart adjustment? To specify it for each step of the workflow?
    Actually, color management is embedded in my whole workflow:
    I always start by a manual WB check before shooting the 1st photo of the forthcoming session, also to focus on my photography. Always shoot RAW, with either AcrosR for better composition or Nostalgic Neg w/ Fuji XT5 viewfinder/LCD. For sure, with other manual WB checks when changing light during the session.
    Then, later on, when 1st editing my session w/ C1, to find the proper color depending on the subject: New WB if needed & all Fuji film sim are available in editing, plus many other possibilities). And a 10bit calibrated monitor ;-) Then jpeg exports of the 5-star, for sharing or output for the main catalog, with tags/keywords.
    And for a few photos, soft proofing w/ C1 for a dedicated paper for printing, w/ its color profile for my printer ;-) Voilà

    I just got the Spyder ColorCheckr24 and am using it with Camera Raw and PS. Chris talks about adjusting white and black levels to percentages, but ACR only seems to display RGB values as I move the pointer over my image. Is there a setting I've missed in ACR? I've used Bridge, ACR and PS for 14 years and never learned LR.

      I think I figured this out..... DO use the LAB in ACR because the L is luminance and ranges from 0 to 100. What do you think?

    I believe Adobe looks prefers 18% gray for WB.
