    I’m all about that 18% grey for white balance but how important is the color matching if you aren’t doing product photography? Coming from an aspiring documentary photographer.

    • @ThisUsernameSystemF-ckingSucks
      @ThisUsernameSystemF-ckingSucks ปีที่แล้ว

      It's probably good as a habit to form but I can't imagine it matters too much unless you use either terrible camera or multiple lenses/cameras.

    • @alansach8437
      @alansach8437 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In most cases, if the colors don't have to be precise (such as a product shoot) the colors only need to be pleasing and natural. The photographer is the judge. Sometimes, the photographer may not want colors to match perfectly, such as in nature photography where saturation and warmth might be added in post, for example. Of course, you need to make sure that your monitor is properly calibrated.

    Perfect as compared to the chart I suppose? The color chart manufacturer could also have their color science on how color is presented
    So my understanding is you are switching from the camera manufacturer profile to the chart manufacturer profile.

    • @satibel
      @satibel ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes but the chart profile is standard, so if you take a picture with 3 different cameras, they should have the same color.
      And since you know the difference, you can map it to pantone colors for example.
      Or if you want to print it, you can map it to a calibrated printer and have it as accurate as possible to the picture you've taken.

    • @kyo7635
      @kyo7635 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@satibel I get the color sync and pentone part, but I think a lot of people are confused and think that by using the color checker it will make your color more “accurate” which is not true.

      Do you know how colours work?

  • @tomtolle99
    @tomtolle99 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Lightrooms colormanagment is garbage tho. It will not apply it correctly. Dont ever use lightroom if you work for a Client and want to deliver correct colors.

    • @sanjirou
      @sanjirou ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you use then?

    • @tomtolle99
      @tomtolle99 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sanjirou Well that not so easy. We looked at several workflows but there is no perfect one.
      I work in animation / VFX industry and the best workflow we found is to use “Nuke”. It very good in converting camera raw formats and very good color management. Converting the raw formats is not that trivial as you would think. Every application will give you different results. Some gave us colors that were completely off. Some had dead pixels that others didn't had. The sharpness varies and sometimes even the border of the image (so sometimes the picture is cropped). And the converters directly from the manufacturers have the same issues.
      But as long as your not working with a huge client or doing things that have to be physically accurate (like HDRi for 3D lighting) I would not go down that rabbit hole. Just Eyeball it. If its looking fine its fine. There is no correct way of doing it (at least if the end result is digital). If you do something for print I am the wrong person to ask.
      Nuke is probably not a good option because it's way too expensive to use it as a picture converter. The Issue with Lightroom is that there is some sort of automatic LUT that gets applied. So probably Photoshop is easiest to use. Even tho its also Adobe it is handling colors better. And again if you are doing “normal” photography lightroom is also fine.
