Sure! I am game for this premise. That sounds like a good idea if International Treasure can pay Nicolas Cage to sign up for a third National Treasure film. Otherwise, Men in Black: International taught us to be careful for what you wish. Men in Black's international sequel experiment with a more complicated story taking place in several different countries instead of the state of New York, and with a new team of younger stars to replace Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones never paid off.
It's just so depressing that a movie can't be made without toy selling iconography and/or a large cinematic universe. Can't emphasize that enough. Why can't it be enough to have an exciting story with good characters and a good cast
Because money. With how ridiculously expensive it is to make Hollywood films, everyone involved has to make a profit on it, and the maximum amount possible. There are so many people involved in making movies and the most significant of them, the Producers, are putting their money up to get them made. They don't want to lose that money, and any way they can increase returns on their investment they will do. That's why merchandising is the most important aspect of filmmaking.. that's just the way it is. If it were possible to make twice as much as they put in on ticket sales alone, the rest wouldn't matter. But because pirating movies online is such a problem, and recently the pandemic affecting theaters, it's more important than ever before to make sure your film is guaranteed to sell ALL the merchandise and set up innumerable sequel opportunities..
@@LegendShark yea, it's terrible. Everyone reading this should take a step towards improving their lives by sending all of their money to me. I will make sure it is disposed of properly.
I remember watching the two National Treasure films religiously as a kid, and so I learned a lot about the basics of American History through them. When I took 8th grade American History, one day my teacher talked about John Wilkes Booth and what he said after he killed Lincoln. So I interrupted her and said, "sic semper tyrannus" in the same dramatic fashion, and she was like: 👁️👄👁️ because since when will an 8th grader give you the right answer, AND in Latin, all because she watched a Disney movie as a kid?? 😂😂😂 I'm telling you my teacher was FLOORED when I told her I learned that from National Treasure.
Captain Midnight: I don't need another National Treasure movie The entire National Treasure fandom coming out of the woodworks for this one video: ... Are You Sure About That?
National Treasure actually was that, according to the lore of the movie the treasure's last place was America, but it was in the hands of other nations of course banking on the entire templar novasotia theory and freemasons... so it kinda was an International Treasure XD. I guess what made Indy J so popular was that 2 of the trilogy went about Christian myths... poking the interest of most of the world rather then just a nation.
About the "national" aspect, here in México it was released as "The Lost Treasure" or "The Search for the Lost Treasure", and I think that worked for the first movie. But I agree, to establish a franchise that might be a big deal. P.S. I was like 12 years old when the sequel came out and I was expecting the third movie about the page 47 for so long. I would still watch that, but with the original cast.
As another comment said international treasures as a spinoff show. Shift focus to a company or outfit ben gates riley and others could cameo in when they need to bust the big guns out.
Yeah, here in Germany it was called "legacy of the Templars". And we are used to movies taking place in America, so it's not really a big deal. But it could be different for other countries.
In Spain the title was called "The Search of the Treasure" (La busqueda del tesoro). And the sequel was called "The Search 2" (La busqueda 2). The title was honestly pretty golden. The first one was great, but I loved the second one even mlre because part of the film took place in Europe. As much as I would like a third movie, I doubt Disney would do it because theg have to make sure it wouldnt get censored in China so who knows what they would have to historically fck up in order for it to be family and china friendly. Sadly, Disney is not what it used to be, when it comes to making live action original movies (not based on anything).
People take these movies seriously? I love National Treasure-it’s one of my favorite movies-but I don’t think it’s a movie your supposed to take seriously. Also, there are plenty of very good to great Nick Cage movies, all of which I take way more seriously than National Treasure.
If there's one thing that movies over the past decade have taught me, is that sometimes it's okay to not have a sequel. Better to have to good ride that leaves you wanting more & goes out on a high-note, than to drag on into mediocrity. Also, as time has gone on, I've drifted farther from, "Oh man, this really cool thing I like is getting a movie adaptation/sequel!" and closer to, "Oh God, they're gonna screw up this thing I like...aren't they?"
I was like a kid when I see this movie, and I am not from the USA, but I became so obsessed It this history that In the next day I make my parents take me to the Museum of Independence of my country to see if in our declaration was some secret message
Need I remind you that Disney was worried about Captain America having International appeal because his name was Captain America? Captain America became one of the most popular characters in the MCU.
Captain America works because he's that old school America, motor cycles, punching Nazis, freedom, all that good stuff. He appeals in the same way that cowboys and denim are really popular in the whole world. It's Americana not America. If Cap was say a current Navy Seal who got the superserum, it wouldn't play nearly as well.
i think Captain America stands for two things that make it work: the true American way of true working classes and working for the betterment of everyone and the core values of sacrifice, tenacity, leadership, endurance and strength of will. at least that's what appeals to me.
Imagine a reboot called “international treasure” or something. It’s like a family friendly version of assassins creed and ben gates travels across the world finding historically relevant treasures. Could teach a lot about world history and it’s endless in potential
@@benmontero36 bust riley, ben, etc out to do setup of an archilogy and research outfit where the big (expensive) faces show up rarely and demonstrate how while the main cast is good for the day to day, there is a reason ben and company are just that step above. This is almost entirely due to the "national" aspect, as you mentioned. This movie is something that will not see in China, and it's all about selling the movie in China now. In fact, they are the number one market, and the American market is secondary. The last Transformers movie made that pretty clear, how they shoe-horned in a Chinese hero storyline.
I just cringe at seeing the china exclusive footage. Suddenly everyone is chinese lighting is different and it's clear they didn't give a day!med and we're just filling a quota. We introduced our boys to the greatness of National Treasure just before Thanksgiving. Then they had to show their cousins, who also loved it. We have watched it lots of times since then which is fine by me because I love them. In fact, our oldest just did a narrative assignment for school and chose National Treasure 2 as his movie. There is an unfinished story and I want to see it wrap up. I am totally up for a show on Disney+, but I want the original cast.
I would love more National Treasure movies but I feel like the ship has already sailed. Disney had their chance, and for whatever reason just let it die right there.
Easy. Shoot 2 more back to back: "National Treasure: The Crown Jewels" where's they're called in to aid on a British caper, establishing his value outside of his speciality and the expertise of other members of his team that specialize in other regions, then National Treasure: International that does the same in China. By the end of Film 4, establish an international team that are each to their home country as he is to the US. Have the costume designers highlight each character's unique background and design outfits as if the next adaptation will be animated.
I wish we could have some more movies like this. Campy, fun treasure hunts, with a bit of creepiness, and a great mystery. I'd be down for a third one where Nick Cage finds a hidden Library of Alexandra. And Sahara is such an underrated movie!! It's so good and fun, and funny. I hope it gets recognized eventually.
They've announced a 3rd film. There hasn't been good historical treasure hunt films since National Treasure and the Da Vinci Code. Hopefully the Uncharted film with Tom Holland is good.
Is it just me or is the pay-off at the end of the first movie one of the best in treasure hunting movies? The lead-up to the reveal just make the scene so important to both the viewers and the characters on screen, I 100% feel it no matter how many times I watch that movie.
I’d love one if it’s got a nice premise. I’ll be honest, “I’m gonna steal the declaration of independence” is a great fuggin line to remember from a film. I don’t remember anything about the sequel.....so yea just an interesting premise would be awesome
One of the few Disney movie main characters without a mask to sell costumes/merch is definitely captain jack sparrow. I remember dressing up as a pirate when I was 7 just because of the franchise.
They could definitely incorporate a national treasure escape room deal in the parks. it would be so different from all the other Disney park attractions but all the rooms being detailed enough to make you feel like you're solving a mystery. The rooms don't have to be based from the film cause spoilers for the escape room but could use elements from those films that re-appear with an alternative use in the rooms.
They are making a show with a younger cast but they are also making National Treasure 3 the movie with everyone returning. The guy from Bad Boys for Life was hired to write it. Seems like an odd thing to completely miss and not mention.
Well, there has been no solid announcement for that. Writers and producers are ALWAYS saying they're "working on X" and then the project is cancelled. I mean, at one point we were supposed to get a Tetris movie. The person you're reffering to is Jerry Bruckheimer and he's saying there's gonna be a sequel since 2008... And it's true that Chris Bremner wrote a first draft of a script, but that's nothing new, there are thousands of scripts that will never be turned into movies. For now, to script has not been picked up by Disney executives. Bruckheimer is just HOPING that he gets to sell the script, but since Lone Ranger, his career at Disney kinda ended, so I doubt they would hire him back anyway.
Both movies were very popular in Brazil. I was around 8-11 years old when they were released and really liked them, as you did around the same age. It was also translated in portuguese, as in the spanish version, as "Search for the Lost Treasure". I believe that if the "national" aspect was a relevant factor in Disney decision to leave the franchise behind, it was more of a "guess" than based on actual research on international cosumer patterns.
I don’t know how well a movie about secret treasure hidden in historical documents would blow over in a “fake news” era. Surely even a well-made movie would become contentious. But it’d sure as heck be fun!
I heard a rumor at one point after the second National Treasure that they were working on a regular third installment about the mystery of Roanoke Island. I would still LOVE to get that film.
It’s too bad the truth of Roanoke has been solved. Literally. They just integrated with the local Indians. The End. DNA & skeletal remains confirmed it.
The Clive Cussler fan base is mixed to negative as far as the movie Sahara goes. Compared to the book it's not as good but as a movie I think it's pretty enjoyable. Clive Cussler was a master of integrating alternate history, mystery and myth into his books as well as current and near future technology and oceanography, especially his Dirk Pitt and Numa files series’. His books are basically National Treasure but on a worldwide scale instead of just American iconic things. I'm excited to see what the authors that are taking over the book series’ do with them. Wish I could have met the guy.
@@Wheels-of-terror As as fan of the Pitt books, I couldn't stand what they did with the movie. Based on that, I'm happy they never bothered with more Pitt books.
@@rahultalkssports1404 That movie was one of the rare ones where Sean Bean didnt die, so perhaps they could bring him back as the bad guy, he was a great villain!!!

I'm with you man! I loved Sahara too. It was a lot of fun. But I also knew nothing about Dirk Pitt going in. The first Mummy with Brendan Frasier fit this mold too, and I wore that VHS out as a kid.
I feel like if this film had come out 5 years earlier in the late 90's, it would have gotten an animated series for kids. Something involving the main characters doing a treasure of the week format, similar to Carmen Sandiego. Kind of like how Godzilla or MIB got animated spinoffs.
I was actually reading Clive Cussler books for a few years before I heard about the movie. Still haven't watched Raise the Titanic or read the book it's based off of yet, think that was his second book.
I would be sooooo down for some sort of sequel to this stuff man, but if Nic Cage and the gang aren’t involved in at least some capacity, why even bother
as a history major i always loved national treasure as a kid and still now (and i'm not even big into american history but still). also your point about the movies being based almost entirely on the East Coast of the US is also why i love it since i'm from the DMV area (loved seeing my university in the 2nd movie). i'm so mad we'll never know what was on page 47..
Tangentially related to the video, but: Disney's "masks" intro for the Star Wars franchise is hot garbage. It is obviously an attempt to play up the iconography, but I personally think it's a lazy failure. What resonates in Star Wars isn't the masks per se, but the characters behind them - Vader, Artoo (brought to life so well by Kenny Baker when he's literally just a metal cylinder), Threepio... Marvel did this right from the very beginning - the comic book style, highlighting moments and feats of those characters; Cap's shield (also a bit of iconography) flying at the screen. Star Wars does it...weakly at best. The masks have no action, no testament to who or what these characters are, no storytelling.
Here’s an idea, the Star Wars logo should be like the initial DVD releases of the first six films where scenes from the movies are shown in the Star Wars lettering.
Let's hope the movie with Tom Holland is any good first. Video games movies are just starting to be kinda good (Tomb Raider, Sonic, Detective Pikachu, flawed movies but they're way above any other movies that came out before) so I have a little bit hope.
I am Australian and I loved National Treasure, my brother saw the movie independently - and bought the DVD something he rarely does - anyway, I thought it was right up there with Indiana Jones. It travelled well across continents because it was an action/adventure tour de force, told really well. The sequel was good, too, the reason why I think there never was a 3rd movie was because it would've been extremely hard for the writers to be come up with a scenario that would fit the "National Treasure" mould. It needs to be big, bold and epic and have fantastical devices like the glasses in the first movie. And after the first two I think they ran out of ideas that they could cobble together. I thought the fourth Indiana Jones movie tried to copy "National Treasure" and failed miserably, I mean aliens - aaaarrrrggggghhhh. Even Tomb Raider tried and failed as well. I won't say no to another installment but it's gotta be wild.
I Think it's because everyone compares it to the book, which is really good. Clive Cussler apparently wasn't too happy with the movie either, but there was also a legal battle after the movie came out over how he depicted the books popularity that might have contributed to his attitude as well. I love both movie and book. Actually had been reading his books for a few years before I heard about the movie. Still haven't watched Raise the Titanic or read the book yet though.
@@Wheels-of-terror I read the book, and I refused to watch the movie. I read enough about it that it was obvious that they just got too many things wrong.
No, seriously, strip away the weird conspiracy stuff (like how there's a treasure map on the back of the Declaration of Independence) and National Treasure is actually pretty spot-on, historically speaking.
Not to sound like a republican but I wonder if today's political climate would make it more difficult to get a third one produced. Like a lot of the founding fathers were slave owners and staff. Even something that's really "woke" like Hamilton struggles with addressing this too much. IDK just thoughts.
@@crystalwolcott4744 I wouldn't worry too much about that. We, as people, are complicated. The things that drive us to do noble deeds and horrible atrocities permeate every single one of us. They do not care about such surface-level things as race, gender, faith, wealth, or any of that. It is true of us now, and it was true in the back end of the 1700s. Yes, some of the Founding Fathers owned slaves while pushing the idea that all men (meaning humanity as a whole) are created equal. They were aware of the irony. These were educated, learned men, probably the best that the States could offer. If they could have built the United States without slavery as a part of it, they WOULD have, of that I'm certain. If I have it right, the question of slavery was a divisive one- the Southern States had a lot of slaves and didn't want to give that up because they'd take a massive hit if they did. At a time when these thirteen states were taking on the most powerful empire on the planet, the colonies had to stand as one, and even when the Constitution was being created, the USA was still young. This brazen experiment with representative government could still collapse, so the Founding Fathers made a REALLY hard choice and basically punted it to future generations of Americans to hammer out. They also knew what would happen if the argument over slavery continued and divided the nation as it did in their time. Thomas Jefferson, for example, warned about the Civil War when he heard about the Missouri Compromise, and that was forty years before the Civil War broke out- a war that Jefferson would not live to see. If the Founding Fathers- Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, and the rest- were to see where we are today, they'd actually be happy that slavery isn't a thing now. They'd be sad about the Civil War, and they'd be baffled about groups like Black Lives Matter, but they would be glad that America was able to do the one thing that they couldn't do. This subject matter really wouldn't work in a National Treasure movie. It needs to be its own thing. For the record, sounding like a Republican isn't a bad thing; you're just wondering about how we ought to look at our history. About the only thing wrong with that would be to take too critical of an approach, because then you look at everything through dirty, broken glasses, which skewers what you see.
@@crystalwolcott4744 Good point. This is actually one of the reasons that I would prefer it if they never did make a third movie, because they would probably ruin it by making it woke, which would defeat the whole point of the movie.

This is like one of those and then everybody clapped posts 😂
I desperately need a third wrap up movie. I've gotta know what was on page 47....

Captain Midnight: I don't need another National Treasure movie
The entire National Treasure fandom coming out of the woodworks for this one video: ... Are You Sure About That?
The solution is make the next one "International Treasure" and give Nicholas Cage a very goofy/distinct hat that can be easily turned into merch.
kind like indiana jones or sherlock holmes with their hats I presume?
@@_LunaTheBlackCat_ I was thinking more along the lines of The Cat in the Hat.
I'd be more surprised if Disney can write anything at this point.
@@cheshirecat1611 The name "Legacy of the Templars" made the sequel title quite unfitting though. No templars there ;)
In Spain the title was called "The Search of the Treasure" (La busqueda del tesoro).
They can simply go after other countries' "national treasures"

If there's one thing that movies over the past decade have taught me, is that sometimes it's okay to not have a sequel. Better to have to good ride that leaves you wanting more & goes out on a high-note, than to drag on into mediocrity. Need I remind you that Disney was worried about Captain America having International appeal because his name was Captain America? Captain America became one of the most popular characters in the MCU.
The man literally punched Hitler, I think most people in the world would find that appealing.
Yeah but they still dropped Captain America from the film title in several countries. Its just called The First Avenger

That would be a great sequel title for a third installment if they want to go outside the US; it would also be a great title for the Disney+ series.

But we already got Where in the World is Carmen San Diego? for that. Of course, I wouldn't complain to that format but with Nic Cage.
It feels like the kid friendly version of DaVinci Code.

National Treasure is a guilty pleasure kind of movie that you don't have to feel guilty about. It's also got an awesome soundtrack.
That would be awesome!!!
I’ve always wanted a National Treasure 3. Treasure Hunting movies are the best
I also loved Sahara as a kid. Must be a "wondrous" thing due to age.
I really liked Sahara too. I was really disappointed we never got any other Dirk Pitt adventures.
Dang I remember Sahara! I loved that when I was younger
Both of these movies are great and executed perfectly the heists are so well and detailed it seems like something you could actually do
Tangentially related to the video, but: Disney's "masks" intro for the Star Wars franchise is hot garbage.
You’re absolutely right, but thousands of fans want one, if not all of those masks hanging in their bedrooms. 🤷🏻♂️

I'd rather see a quality Uncharted series take off instead of trying to force these characters into international adventures.

Sahara was soo good 😂😩 it wasn’t till i grew up that i realized everyone hated it lmao

One of the things I love the most about these movies is that there's a clear love for America and it's history,
No, seriously, strip away the weird conspiracy stuff (like how there's a treasure map on the back of the Declaration of Independence) and National Treasure is actually pretty spot-on, historically speaking.
