Keanu Reeves has created an interesting career for himself over the years, from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure to The Matrix to Cyberpunk 2077. In this video, I go over what I think makes the actor special and talk about his great performances in movies like John Wick and well as his...not so great performances.

Keanu Reeves, he gets written off because of his famous and infamous range of roles, and has suffered throught a lot of tragedy, but man, the guy not only loves work and help others. He's both a hard working actor, and yet the most approachable person you could meet. Man's a treasure and doesn't wanna see himself as one, well he's a king no matter what.
(Plus, over the year, my mom told me she's been in love with him since the late 80's, which makes sense in hindsight, she always watched his stuff no matter what lol.)

I do think it's worth mentioning that this latest Keanu Reeves renaissance, Keanaissance, Reevaissance, whatever you want to call it, is due to just him as a person. I can't think of another celebrity who is as humble and down to earth as Keanu. He takes pay cuts so other cat and crew can get paid more, he donates millions of dollars to children's hospitals, he takes public transportation, he never thinks of himself as better than anyone else. He just comes across as a genuinely good person, and it just makes everyone love him, no matter the role he takes.

Honestly finding out what happens with him is why Ive put up with all the crashes so yeah he kinda breathes the life into the games especially when the execs at CDPR didn’t.

If you do the Johnny Silverhand sidequests in Cyberpunk, it really makes you understand Silverhand as a character and enjoy him more. I totally agree that he is my favorite character in the whole game, I even chose the ending that focuses on him (which made me like him even more). The only time I ever get taken out of the game is when I hear a Samurai song because it doesn't sound ANYTHING like Keanu, but that's another story.

I've personally known him since the Matrix trilogy. The Movies were awesome imo. But 10 year-olds from the internet tell me that Keanu's first appearances as an actor were in the John Wick franchise? Seriously? That's just....utterly dissapointing. They should've known him since the Matrix.
But Most of us have known him from the Matrix trilogy. I'm also excited for the Matrix 4! I also Love the John Wick trilogy, I think Keanu really made a fantastic job as both Neo and John Wick. He was also awesome as Johnny Silverhand from Cyberpunk 2077 even though the Game is a bit Horrible due to its tone of Bugs, Glitches, and terrible logic and physics.

@@Christopher-md7tf there is a HUGE difference between “famous” (which is not what I said) and “Superstar”, which is a level much of this video is addressing as relates to Reeves’ current career. The best thing that ever happened to Keanu Reeves was for "Bill and Teds" to get delayed for a few years. That allowed him to work on films that he may never have gotten if he were typecast as a stoner. He broadened his range of film genres, and that allowed him to branch out to any movie genre for his whole career. I also think that's why he has been willing to do cameos in many different projects. It's allowed him to delve into genres that he may otherwise never have the time to fully commit to.

Having played Cyberpunk 2077, Keanu Reeve's performance is exceptionally great.
The rebellious, no fucks given, Rockerboy that is Johnny Silverhand is really sold well by his performance. Its honestly a highlight of the game to have some genuine dialogue with him during the main story beats or just hear his opinion at other things. It feels both like a new thing for Reeve's but also very much so feels like his sort of acting. Atleast in the voice acting you can sense a clear distinction between him and the talent that is in the rest of the game.
Definitly worth having a follow up on this once you get around to play Cyberpunk.

Some other actors may exude this here and there but with keanu you never not feel it. It's that he always seems to be happy to be a part of that project regardless of what it is or what his role in it is. And don't say it's the money because what we do know of him and his personality, money has not been an issue for him since The Matrix. And that's if it ever was.

A Scanner Darkly is amazing, and the fact it's rotoscoped is just insane I can't even imagine how long that must've taken. I still haven't watched the John Wick movies yet (I know I need to especially because from what I've heard it's essentially The Punisher but a Dog dies instead of his fam).
Also he's the best character in Cyberpunk 2077, you really have to follow his quest lines and help him out to really get to know more about the character, and the more you do the more interesting he gets, I don't think very many people do follow his story though because I remember when I got the trophy for one of the later quests involving his character the trophy said only like 1.3% of players had earned it, which in all fairness I'd pre ordered it and finished it in a couple weeks so maybe it was still too new. But yeah he's a great character in that game, going from an asshole whose seemingly a terrorist to someone you can really empathize with and understand, I won't spoil anything but definitely would recommend helping him throughout the game.

A beautiful story about a man loves a young, single woman who is pregnant at a time when it was extremely frowned upon and finds a family he never thought he would have. One of my favorite movies that he's in is a movie called Freaked. Talk about small roles in indie films, Freaked was directed by Bill and Ted cco-star, Alex Winter. It's a goofy, gag-a-minute comedy about circus freaks. In it, he plays Ortiz the Dog Boy. He never appears without his dog makeup, and he's not even mentioned in the credits. He just acted in this obscure, relatively low-budget movie for what was probably a small paycheck right at the beginning of his stardom just because he was friends with the guy who made it and loved acting.

This is a fantastic video but there is one point towards the end I’d like to disagree with and that is your thoughts on his character in ‘Always Be My Maybe.’
I think it’s another good example of him taking a character that is written shallow and adding some heft to it. You start out so excited by the cameo but by the end of the film he insists that you dislike him.
Seems very in line with your point that he doesn’t care if another actor takes the spotlight. Anyways, this was a truly amazing video, thank you for making it.

Bit of a shame you didn't mention some of the other indie roles that make his career more rich and interesting than the blockbuster ones (quite often supporting roles, actually): The privates lives of Pippa Lee, Thumbsucker, The Neon Demon, To the bone...Good that you focused on A Scanner Darkly though, very underrated one.

In defense of A Walk In The Clouds. It's one of my absolute favourite romantic movies, for a couple of reasons. One is the absolute lack of misogyny, I don't understand why so many romcoms have non-consent moments, who is the target audience? There is none of that in WitC, there isn't even any shaming of the cheating woman. And the ensemble work is so solid, I love every scene in that movie. Keanu's earnestness works so perfectly in it. Can't imagine if a sleazier actor had gotten cast, so many opportunities for setting a non-gentle tone to lines and silences... Finally, what a great score by Maurice Jarre. Yep, one of my most go-to of romance movies.

I honestly think the cast - including keanu if he got some help with the accent- would’ve been so perfect if the script was a little better…

Bill and Tedd, Point Break, The Matrix, Speed and of course John Wick. All of those are iconic roles from him and many will think of one of those roles when thinking of him, i grew up with the The Matrix being born in early 90's so Neo for me will always be his defining role however my Mum tends to think of Point Break with him while the newer generation will think of John Wick.
Very few actors have this level of iconic roles and is prove that Reeves is very much a movie star where he himself is the selling point, John Wick wouldn't be what it is without him and i doubt The Matrix would have got sequels. Reeves while a limited actor is brilliant at the roles what suit his style, Neo and John Wick are very much Reeves roles and the fact the guy does do a fair amount of the stunts just sells you with the fight scenes.

I saw Destination Wedding and Siberia within a few weeks of each other. I really enjoyed Destination Wedding for what it was ( a stage play involving 2 characters) that I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue and just general interaction between him and Winona Ryder. Siberia I absolutely despised as it felt like a John Wick clone if John Wick was an average joe person, just thrown in to crazy situations. I am perfectly content to blame the storyline. But it was an interesting example of how he seems to enjoy smaller pictures even if they aren't gonna be famous or even meant to be. Like Christopher Lee, he seems to be a working actor and that is something I can appreciate.
It is worth pointing out the juxtaposition between his performance in Dracula tanking but Much Ado About Nothing working somehow. Overall, I am glad he's still making movies and that they are so varied.
