You will most definitely appreciate the Golf Mk1 R sold in South Africa in 2007. See here: www.car-specs.za.net/car.aspx?specs=volkswagen-citi-golf-1.8i-r-2006-11-4584 It had a 90kW 1.8i engine with all modern car updates, including airbags, a/c, central locking, optional sunroof, etc.
It would be cool with wider arches, a bit like the Lancia Delta Integrale, and also simplify the front door windows, i.e. remove the small triangular window in front of the side mirrors. Maybe a bit modern front bumper with some front brake cooling intakes and fog lights? 😊
It a nice redo, and your idea of retro-electrics is not a bad one. It reminds me of the Honda electric hatch that just came out we will never get. I would still rather be forward thinking and take advantage that electrics have in terms of design, and not be limited by 2-3 box design. Fronts dont need to be big. I just want to less frunks too. I also think there could be a good cooler there, something like major server setups use.
Very nice work, I like it! Such an hommage would be a really cool idea. Question is: can you revive an over 30-year-old bodywork without touching it too much but implement all necessary modern safety requirements such as crumple zones, pedestrian protection etc.? I think that’s hard.
Nice. Here in South Africa the Mk1 was in production until about 2010, rebadged as the Citigolf. Your design looks similar to the final versions, with integrated bumpers and a backwards slanted nose. Check out the Citigolf 1.8iR on Wikipedia. .
Correct in South Africa also we had the Cti with the similar Gti engine also with modern dashboard ,rims , full front door windows , electric mirrors and refinements etc ..its very much still a cult car here with plenty after market add-ons and huge following..
Love your redesign! Your comments towards the end remind me of IONIQ 5, a Hyundai homage to its classic Pony Coupe in the 70's. As an owner of Mk5 Golf GTI, another classic, I would "upgrade" to something like your redesign in a heartbeat as well.
Look at the VW Polo Mk2, it looks more like the car you’ve made there, just a little bit different ofc.. but it has most of the features that you’ve put on that mk1
Excellent!! Love the subtle changes to the body, and the new "grille" that looks like it could be an "intelligence panel". Looks ready for production! :)
Excellent redesign. The side mirrors could get the Audi A6 e-tron treatment and the window trims need to be updated to today's standard. Agree with you about the Mk4 R32 so much that I plan to keep my 2004 indefinitely.
Nice job! For me, the front grill needs some graphical element to make it seem less horizontal (maybe a square light unit where the smaller circular were?), but it is clearly a Golf and much better than the current one :) Hope to see the rear redesign as well. I like MK2's rear more than MK1 and would like to know your opinion and what you end up creating 👏🏾👏🏾
Hey I have an interesting request for the next video: “B is for Build” is building a crazy Off-road Huracan and he is at a very interesting point in his build, but he’s missing fenders and the exterior design is non existent. Would you be willing to make a sketch or even a full design of what that Jumpacan (that’s how he’s calling it)? I think it would be an awesome video just like that of stradman’s widebody 458. Please don’t let us down🙏🏻
I had the a MK1 gti, and I'd love to see an idea of Vw using the old shape like yourself to go forward, I'm all about the classics, and feel the electric view is missing the passion of driving, through sound, and a vehicle that will be a future classic.
Ended up looking more like a mk1 polo/audi 50. I've come to expect more from your work, especially on such an iconic car as the mk1 Golf, doesn't even look special as a Gti based design should be. Best regards from Portugal.
They were sold in South Africa up until 2009...very big "Citi Golf" culture here...check out Jamie Orr's pristine example...you get some crazy ass builds here too..but the most popular standard ones were the Velocity 1.4i, 1.6i and the 1.8i R...
When I saw the title of Your Redesign my first thoughts were "O *hit !" and "Please don't *uck it up". I am really fascinated by Your passion and skill but this car is my ultimate dream car and I could not forgive You if You would "hurt my baby" ;) . I don't know how many years I keep dreaming about getting one but they are getting more and more expensive. But ! Yesterday I bought 1991 Golf MK1 Cabriolet :D I am not kidding ! .. and I am proud as hell :D One more thing.. There is one modern car that reminds me MK1 very much, and that is Honda E especially concept model from IAA Frankfurt Motorshow 2017 - I saw it live. The main body shape is so similar to the first gen Golf - it just have this THING in very modern way. I think You've got the same feeling because You used Front lights from Honda to Your redesign ;) .. Anyway, Great Job and I would like to see redesign of back end but in black or red color ;) Greets!
Have you not seen the Citi Golf version of the mk1 in South Africa? Was continued until 2009 with upgraded interior, body kit and fuel injected engines. I own a 2008 citiROX mk1 golf 1.4i fuel injected in Cape Town South Africa.
You should really drive the golf 6 GTi, it really has a soul and character. Especially the manual, doesn't feel digital, you can feel everything the car does, which keeps in character with the first gen Golf. Offcourse, the looks no longer have that much of the first, but the feel of the car is still quite iconic.
The South African built Citi Golf is the modern varient of the original MK1 It's production ended on the 21st of August 2009 You should check it out, that's if you don't know about it
golf 1 was already modernized and sold in south africa up to 2009.. please look up the "Rline Citigolf' and tell me what you think. start with electrification upgrade from there
I would buy that right now.
Out of stock
I bought all of them 😁
not if its an ev
Honestly, that Golf looks really fun to drive. I'd buy one if VW ever made a modern Golf like that.
Please do a rearview!
Damn, this is one of your best designs. Looks so sleek, clean and cool. Actually took multiple screenshots.
You will most definitely appreciate the Golf Mk1 R sold in South Africa in 2007.
See here:

it's a Honda E 😑
@@OussaMeb Looks nothing like a honda E
Yes, do the rear view. You should also do one for the mk1 Ford Focus 😄
hey! I'm sure you have read this a million times, but please please turn a Gaz-21 series 3 into a retro SUV.
he still didn't do it? I recognize you for asking every time!!
@thesketchmonkey do it for him
That would be cool.
Honda E headlights were a nice touch!
I love how instead of looking up the new GTI he redesigns the old one. That‘s dedication. 💪🏻🔥
Love, love , love this idea !
As a former owner of a Golf Mk1 and currently loving a Pickup/Caddy for 26 years now, I'm READY to buy that updated GTI💯
Strong Honda e vibes. Please please do a Land Rover discovery update using the new Land Rover defender design language!
LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
That quick flash back to the current Golf really screamed to me just how lost and undesirable it has become.
A modernized 1971 Skyline GT-R would look very nice
It would be cool with wider arches, a bit like the Lancia Delta Integrale, and also simplify the front door windows, i.e. remove the small triangular window in front of the side mirrors. Maybe a bit modern front bumper with some front brake cooling intakes and fog lights? 😊
love this style of redesinging
I think it's more of a restomod
I owned a 1984 Rabbit GTI - and man you nailed this one !!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats - Well Done !!!!!
It a nice redo, and your idea of retro-electrics is not a bad one. It reminds me of the Honda electric hatch that just came out we will never get. Love this redesign! Simple, clean, back to its roots. I'd love to see a redesign of the Ford Focus Mk1!
Someone hire this man RIGHT NOW! 😤🔥
I really really want to see a grand national! Please please
Very nice work, I like it! Such an hommage would be a really cool idea. Question is: can you revive an over 30-year-old bodywork without touching it too much but implement all necessary modern safety requirements such as crumple zones, pedestrian protection etc.? I think that’s hard.
Wow Golf to Yugo transformation...all we need is square headlights...nice
It does look like a Yugo lol
VW uses a VR6 not a V6 actually, i love ur content i love the way u simplify car desing
Make a Volkswagen Beetle E! Would be interesting to see an electric modern retro version of it
wont lie as a fan of this car i agree it was a game changer we have 2, one 2 door and a 4 door so simple easy to work on too.
Shall we all start a petition for Volkswagen to put this in production? Do a modern Vespa next!
Great modernization, love the information voiceover btw, keep that up!

I have the 04 citi with a mp3 engine, it take a beating and stil goes with no problem

Another amazing job! I would love to see a modern rendition of the Alfa Romeo Duetto/Spider. 😊
i really love this redesign - can you please do a redesign of the Volkswagen Bug?
there already is a vw bug
@@DemeDemetre and already a vw golf, and he still made the golf
I'd like to see a Twingo redesign

The one before the 90s
Just bought my first car, a lovely Golf 4
Excellent!! Love the subtle changes to the body, and the new "grille" that looks like it could be an "intelligence panel". Looks ready for production! :)
The grille was done nicely .
Nice sharp creases..
I'm going to buy it right now!
Redesign a Peugeot 308 Stationwagon into a modern Peugot 308 PSI
(Peugeot Sport Engineered)
An EV take on the boxiest of boxes, Volvo 744, would be cool 😎
Wow looks good 👺👍🏼, how about to change ( Eclipse Cross ) crossover to sport hatchback or 2 door copy 🤔
Nice redesign! Where did you take the headlights from?
Excellent redesign. The side mirrors could get the Audi A6 e-tron treatment and the window trims need to be updated to today's standard. Agree with you about the Mk4 R32 so much that I plan to keep my 2004 indefinitely.
I LOVE this design. SO MUCH. I WANT ONE!!! Did you use headlights from the Honda e?
Nice job! For me, the front grill needs some graphical element to make it seem less horizontal (maybe a square light unit where the smaller circular were?), but it is clearly a Golf and much better than the current one :)
Hope to see the rear redesign as well. I like MK2's rear more than MK1 and would like to know your opinion and what you end up creating
👏🏾👏🏾
Do a mk2 Ford escort please!
I think this is my favourite of all your designs.
You absolutely nailed it, skitsnyggt! The same would be epic with Lancias and Alfas from the 60s to 80s
I’ve been waiting for this video for a very long time
That's a great idea. I'm looking forward to see the rear!
Absolutely lovely. Looks a bit like the Honda E
Clean and simple!
I'd like to see an ev mk1 Fiesta xr2. Pepperpot alloys 🤩
That is amazing Sketch , l used to have a 1981 Audi GT coupe and l think this would've been a great candidate for an EV car , or even the mk2 Scirocco

Loving this video! I wish car manufacturers would actually come out with cars like this!
Very cool desing but prefer the quad front headlights, with the GTI letters, an actual grid and off course proper 2021 wheels. Anyway good job ;)
Modern amazon please?
Pretty clean
I love this little beauty❤️❤️👌👌
love this retro futuristic vibe infact i'm in love with the design of the honda E
This is the reason I really want to buy a Honda e, even if it's stats scream not to.

Good job, only thing I would change here is lower the rear end of the roof
Can you redesign the Yugo in this similar way
Please do a modern version of the mk3 gti as well! 😁 I would get the mk1 ASAP if they made it, but the mk3 has a special place in my heart. 👍
SketchMonkey: One of the best concept cars we have seen in recent times is...
Me: The Honda Civic EV.
SketchMonkey: The Hyundai Pony
Me: The what?
I had a MK6, currently have a MK7 but have no interest in the MK8. Your MK1 looks so much better, would buy in a heartbeat
Imo it looks more like a restomod then a complete redesign , still cool
I feel that this is better than the current VW Golf
Nice! I'd buy one.
They were sold in South Africa up until 2009...very big "Citi Golf" culture here...check out Jamie Orr's pristine example...you get some crazy ass builds here too..but the most popular standard ones were the Velocity 1.4i, 1.6i and the 1.8i R...
really liked this one
Excellent job. I would definitely buy that. I would like to see a modern take on the original subaru brat
You think exactly like me! It's all true what you say, and about Giugiaro design. We must make such cars, and we can! Who come with me?
I did before you did but I still like watch you
You more talented
t
Can you retronize the golf mk8?
nice redesign!
Nicely done. By the way, the thin red line in the front is called a Pin-stripe.
Now i want to learn fiberglass molding and get a golf 1
Can you do modern redesign of peel p50 if thats even possible?
Somehow the new roofline reminds me of the Scirocco back then

Super dope. Can you do a Toyota Tazz modern design?
Gorgeous redesign, but you should start drawing cameras as mirrors, it gives it a little more autenticity
65 mini redesign pls
Can you make a video of redesign the rear of this car too
Where can I order one please?
love it. would buy.
Can u make a modern version of a shevy bell air coupe?
Clean and timeless design. The Hyundai Ionic 5 is a true alternative. ;o)
your decades of future automotive design !
I’d buy one!
Very nice!
The South African built Citi Golf is the modern varient of the original MK1
It's production ended on the 21st of August 2009
You should check it out, that's if you don't know about it
Well, at least send them the video. It looks amazing. I totally agree with you....
I'd like to see what you could do to bring the skoda 120L back to life, in my view a very underrated saloon and one which I loved.
Can you customization 2006 fiat albea?
golf 1 was already modernized and sold in south africa up to 2009.. please look up the "Rline Citigolf' and tell me what you think. start with electrification upgrade from there
