    The Shell Cordovan owner has to be ecstatic! He traded garbage and $485.00 and got in return a $850.00 pair of shoes that are 99% as good as new!! Sign me up!! The other shoe while beautifully down may not reflect the same savings but you've restored the uppers from the grave, and rebuilt with a sole and heel that will be tougher and give longer service than a brand new pair!! Amazing job Steve and thanks for the lesson!!

    No need to apologize. I enjoy the leather trouble shooting and treatment videos. It’s most applicable to us because we can use these technique ourselves. I don’t think I’m going to attempt a resole any time soon.

    Steve, you may not know how much your video's are appreciated in these very hard times. It takes my mind off the current pandemic for 20 minutes. I can sit in my chair and not think about anything else for just a little while and watch you bring back 2 pairs of shoes from the edge of the trash. Thank you for persevering and offering some respite. Hammertime! May you and yours be safe and healthy.

    Steve, loved the video. So, a few years ago I ruined a pair of brown Allen Edmonds Cornwallis by walking through some salty snow/slush. I was devastated! I happened upon your original video of restoring water damaged uppers and went through EVERY step. It did the job. The stains were gone. But then I made a mistake and used a shoe leather dye and literally painted it on. It looked horrible. And to make matters worse, upon flexing, the dye started to peel off. Anyway, I let be for almost 3 years. A few days ago, I stripped off the dye/paint with some brake cleaner and applied some Saphir renovator, brown shoe polish and wax. Man, did it bring back the colour and the shoes look great. Thank you for your tips on how to restore the water damage. I will probably have them recrafted by a local cobbler and get new soles.

    I have a pair of black leather boots that I wore in 4 inches of wet slushy snow while pushing a legless man in a wheelchair across a salt-treated parking lot. (It’s a long story.)This caused a huge white salt residue stain around both boots. I immediately went home and cleaned them with white vinegar. Then conditioned and polished them. That was twenty years ago and they still look as good as new. My dad taught me how to take care of my shoes. I used to polish his shoes every Saturday night so that they would be ready for Sunday morning church.

      Yes, I have used the white vinegar and water trick too but not to the extent of soaking them and then wrapping them in paper towels and a plastic bag for a few days. Wonder what Steve would say about the vinegar method?

    A 50/50 mix of acetone and denatured ethyl alcohol makes a very good solvent. You should get both at Home Depot.
    As always you are a genius at work!

    • @kayBTR
      @kayBTR 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rance, what does the acetone exactly do to the leather? Seems like it would strip the dye. I just don’t understand what it does? Thanks for your advice.

  • @shdwbnndbyyt
    @shdwbnndbyyt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    As a chemist, I would not recommend putting pure acetone into the red plastic cup. Two reasons. One: Acetone evaporates quickly in open containers. Two: Acetone is likely to dissolve the plastic cup or extract plasticizers from the plastic. Plasticizers can be transferred into your body by the acetone, and they can cause cancer or worse Reduce Testosterone levels, as most plasticizers are estrogen-like compounds.

      I once put acetone in a plastic cup and the cup's bottom dissolved... Fortunately, I only tried that once.

    You can see on the paper towel when you remove it that where it was touching thestained area - the paper towel is now discolored. Great technique!

    Interesting. I have worked on several uppers that had water and salt stains and I just stripped the waxes with Renomat, used Saphir Salt Stain formula on the water stains, after dried, Cleaned with Saddle Soap, then when dried I used Saphir Conditioner and let soak and dry for 2-3 days and done. Back to new. But I love watching how others approach things differently as one never knows when they will come across a scenario where the formula they normally use, doesn't work. Just another alternative approach to accomplishing the same thing.

    I think you sold yourself short with how you described the outcomes here...BIG TIME...those Alden shells look amazing, and the whole color scheme on them between the uppers and soles is eye candy. Plus, if those AE's didn't have any of the slight wrinkles in them from wear, I'd have thought they were brand new out of the box! Continue to stay safe and healthy during this time, and thanks for the great content!
