I just bought a Roland System-1, still learning how to use it but so far it makes some of the most impressive tones I’ve ever heard. The JD-XI is also pretty awesome.
Shut up and take my money! the quality of sound coming from that synthesizer is amazing, out of all the boutique synthesizers that I've heard recently including the Moog One, this synthesizer for me gets my top mark.

God those patches are bad. I know the Quantum is capable of sounding full, lush, and pleasant - and yet most of these sounds are rather horrid. Waiting for some good patches to come out of this thing.
I mean, come on, how advanced this studd really is. Words cannot describe. Don't know much about synthesizing but this seems to just have it all. Future right here. Wow.
I NEED one so please send it in the mail when you're done...This is a machine to dig into and you have to learn, period. If you think about a Triton type machine, probably not for you.I would have my Roland analog, the Waldorf Quantum,Roland VSYNTH GT,and the Neutron...That's all I would need,,This is something like the Hartmann,Andromeda, etc, etc, that do a LOT...
no wonder soft synths are so popular. $5000 for one synth is something only the elite or touring musicians can afford. I do love that touch pad for controlling filter sweeps. Wish they made a midi controller like that.
It's pricey, however if you look at the history of synth pricing, it's not outrageous. For example, the Korg M1 came out in 1988. One source says it listed at $2000. That would be about $4500 today. Which is the price of this synth. And the M1 sold very well, according to what I read. I am sure I could come up with many examples. Yamaha's Montage is $3000. Quite a bit cheaper, but not exactly a Berhinger. I feel people are used to paying a lot less money for synths, due to all the cheap synths now. But the flagship products can be quite pricey. R&D isn't free, for one thing. If someone does R&D to make a new video card, they can sell a lot of them. They may only sell 5000 of these.
This is not only a tool for incredible sound design, it is an example of a hardware masterwork. The Quantum is true art, from its capability to its presentation. A sincere thank you for this dream synth, Waldorf.
They always neglect to mention that there are eight waveforms per oscillator which can be detuned. So eight voices with three oscillators a piece and eight waveforms per oscillator means you can play 192 waveforms at once.
I remember the first time I put my hands on a Waldorf synthesizer model, the Q+ back in 2002. It was sitting one tier above to a Supernova II. Frankly, I wanted both of those models at the same time. I’m sure this model is totally capable, but it’s hard for me to tell instinctively whether I would spend the money on it if I even needed another synthesizer, the way I would’ve gone for the Q+. It might be different if I specifically thought I wanted a duplicate of the PPG Wave 2 with the virtual patch matrix of the Oberheim Matrix 12 attached.
ShreadTheWeapon Do you remember how much it was for the Q+? I’ve got a Q and to this day it is a deep, lush and flexible machine. The architecture is the best logically laid ever for such a deep machine. A Q+ is an all timeless classic instrument IMO.
I like these sawmill icy sounds. Useful for a lot of things. My blofeld suffers from low output, I reckon Waldorf have fixed this with Quantum. Nice synth.
I love my Blofeld but I have the same issue with weak line output and a bit of noise through the outputs when connected via USB. It seems like this is a known issue with Blofeld, but there's an easy (and relatively cheap) fix. I plug mine into a 2-channel passive DI box, hit the ground lift, and plug the DI into a couple of mic preamps on my interface. This provides a crystal clear signal with tons of gain; Blofeld sounds killer with this method. Thanks for watching! -Dave
I get what people mean about the high end. It's certainly interesting up at the top end and won't be everyone's cup of tea. That said, from the PPG onwards Waldorf has often done quite harsh sounding stuff. And presumably it can all be tamed with the analogue filters.
Duel part and 8 voice for $5900 AUS in 2019? even appreciating some of it's interesting features it's mostly a software driven device...needs to be $3900 really.
TechGently Having a Waldorf Q and MODX I have to disagree. The Q is more logically laid and way faster to program 90% of the time. Of course we are talking about apples and oranges, but then again.
TechGently The MODX has more ready-to-play presets, but sound design is 100% tedious menu-diving, no was easier than with lots of knobs *plus* a touch-screen.
If this thing has analog filters, TURN THEM ON. This synth sounds like a visit to the dentist office. Remember when Waldorf made great synths? Those were the days.
Although a hybrid, it rather sounds digital and doesn't have the richness in sound that e.g. a Moog offers..... It offers a lot of posibillities, that can be useful in someones workflow, but if sound is matters, it can be only one of a bunch of synthesizers.
Moppedsebi We synthesists know better than anyone that electronics have souls, and a saw wave from a Prophet 5 sounds different from a saw from a Moog Modular or a CS80 or a Korg Minilogue or one of these things. It matters, and just because this box “can” do everything under the sun doesn’t mean that it’s gonna do everything better. I want a vintagey richness in a synth, and this definitely doesn’t have it. Still, an amazing piece of kit.
@@andrewnibbi I have a Moog Sub37, and I can duplicate it's sound pretty closely with my Prophet 12. The biggest difference is the "buzziness" of the saw, and what a filter sweep sounds like. Don't get me wrong, love the Sub37, beautiful bass. But I remain unconvinced it provides much I can't do with my other synths. And I have heard it compared to a Minimoog, and it's pretty much the same thing, with some subtle differences. Maybe by itself, if I had perfect hearing I would notice or miss some sonic signature stuff, but in the mix??
The only drawback (for me personally) are those mod and pitch wheels....not a fan of the thin ones, or ones with indents. Other than that, great synth. I would prefer more Kawai K4 style mod wheels, but everyone has their preferences.
From what I've heard so far I can't get into this synth even though it looks beautiful and sturdy. These sounds are painful. Even the basic saw and square waves, but especially the granular synth sounds. I prefer DX bells over these harsh tones. For my taste, the most useful sounds were at 10:15, 11:35, and the bass tone at 15:30. That top end needs to be tamed. Also, what happened to making multitimbral synths with huge polyphony? A low number of voices is an analog limitation. I don't understand why a modern digital synth has this limitation even with analog filters.
Racing Heart Records I thought it was just me.....synth is obviously really powerful, but it lacking that digital oscillator “bigness” and analog warmth
This is the typical Waldorf sound that I actually recognize instantly from the humble Blofeld - hard, crushing and metallic. If unleashed, it sounds like a circle saw cutting through German steel. Incredibly pricey as hardware, but I would love to see it released as a software version. After all it is mainly software in a dedicated (and beautiful) box.
Very tiring to listen to... the Moog one demos are indeed pathetic except the one with STM, there is something human about a Moog, this thing is robotic. Interesting but robotic.
I'm getting divorced!!!!!!!!!!!!......cried for a month or two.....now thinking about moving back to mum and dads and getting a Quantum! Swings and roundabouts.
I really don't get this kind of synths. Every patch just fills the whole sound spectra and can only be used in an intro or film making. Those are totaly useless for songwriters since those patches are to advanced to fit in a mix. Can anyone explain this? Like, take the first sound in this video. How could it be used in any song?
Tomas Brun The explanation is they are there to show cast how wide the palette is, but look, you have thirty something knobs in the panel, can’t you just grab a couple of cut off knobs and magically transform one of those sounds into a focused narrower spectrum and usable one?
For the value, I'll take the Roland JD-XA.. This synth might be good for sound design. Those patches being played don't sound warm.. at all.. it looks like it's powerful ... but... *shaking head* I'm good.

Definitely one of the most physically appealing synths ever made! This video is probably the best I've seen that has me now wanting the Quantum.
It looks, sounds, and plays wonderfully. Thanks for sharing this video with us.
All I want for Christmas is a Waldorf Quantum, a Moog One and a Prophet 6
Wow, you are not easily pleased! :)

All jokes aside, this thing sounds big.
