American REACTS to RUGBY | Jonny Wilkinson Big Hits

  • The next team up in our 2019 Rugby World Cup review is England. This first video is a reaction to Jonny Wilkinson Big Hits.
I went with this video for Jonny because it seemed unusual that a fly-half would have a big hits video and be so highly regarded for defense. Don't worry, the 2003 World Cup will get it's own video 😉.
I know it's been almost two weeks since the last video, and that's because I have been dealing with a move (which is the worst). I will be back now on my 3 - 4 videos a week schedule!

--Sharing a common goal of sending me to the 2019 Rugby World Cup (and/or other international rugby matches)
I can guarantee that all money contributed up to the 2019 RWC will go towards sending me to a rugby match. If we can't get it done in time for the World Cup, then I will save it for another event.

Wilkinson without doubt the best defensive 10 in history.. Great all round player, but defensively no one to touch him.. His team mates just loved him at club and international level because they knew anyone running his channel would be dumped, no matter their size.. Only 5ft 10 and under 14 stone.. His bravery cost him 4 years of his prime with serious shoulder injuries, otherwise he would be regarded as one of, if not the best 10 ever.. Those not knowing much about rugby focus on Johnny's kicking, which was superlative, from tee and out of hand, but never look at his vision, pace in his younger days, distribution.. When he went to Toulon towards the end of his career, many thought it was for the money, but he changed the way they played and is regarded rightly as a God at Toulon, and in France generally.. That's unheard of for a foreigner, never mind an English player.. And to top it all off, he's the most unassuming, self effacing guy off the pitch too.. I first saw him play at 15 when warming up for a County game, and was sure he was special then, as did my County team mates.. I was privileged to see his final game at the Millennium stadium, with many great games in between..

Agreed - Johnny was a total professional & a training obsessive - no other player trained harder at his skills before or since imo & only Neil Back & Josh Lucy in the England team at the time were maybe physically fitter.
Johnny remains the best kicking & defensive number 10 I've ever seen - seeing a practice video where he consistently drop kicked balls to deliberately hit the uprights - from the side of the posts - off both feet - repeatedly; that will always stay with me. Perhaps only Dan Carter could better him in attack & maybe get close to him in defence on a good day.
Toulon have never been the same team since Johnny retired as Captain on such an incredible high by winning multiple European Championships - some mitigation for his many lost years through a mountain of injuries.
      Merci Johnny.

Johnny was without doubt the best 10 this county has ever produced. His courage in tackles and his ability to read the game go hand in hand, any 6, 7 or 8 who chose to run his channel were soon reminded who was there. As we all know his kicking game was second to none setting records all over the place.

@@Kawasakifreak1 spot on, i remember reading somewhere that Neil Back was told he was too small to play flanker but his fitness and intensity was uncompromising which saw him through.
As for Josh Lewsey, I remember seeing his tackle on Matt Rogers and it caused the club to go wild for a while.

There was an interview with Jonny WIlkinson where he admitted that when he got to Toulon and relaxed and recovered after training in the warn waters of the Mediterranean he wondered why he'd spent so long in the North East of England!
Like you i had the privilege to watch him live on occasions at Twickenham and abroad, he could see things saw before they happened.
Also remember being in an Irish Bar in stockholm 2003 when we were down to the Welsh at half time and i was getting an incredible amount of stick....where's your jonny gone, you better get your missus down the doctor's cos your jonny has broken....blah blah blah..... when the final whistle went i couldn't speak and i couldn't talk for 3 or 4 days following thanks to his remarkable performance and giving me something to shout about. made quite a bit of money out of the welsh and their fair weather fans when i bet them at half time we would win by five.

Jonny Wilkinson needs a series, he has an interesting mind, and is a bit of a troubled soul. He was obsessed with his craft, which made him the player he was but the mental stress of trying to complete goals he’d set as a youngster took there toll, as well as the pressure to perform to his extremely high standards. He won the World Cup in 2003 with a drop goal in extra time and subsequently went on to win world player of the year after the tournament. However he was plagued by injuries for most of his career; the list is huge. He is one of the all time greats due to his performances and professionalism. As for the greatest fly half, it always gets boiled down to two, Wilkinson or Carter. Both different, both equally great, and it’s a debate that will never be settled. But in my eyes Jonny was the best ever. Please do more on him, I think you’ll really enjoy learning about him and his career. Also another thing you need to check out is The British and Irish lions, the highest honour for a northern hemisphere rugby player. Keep the quality content up 👍🏼

Wilkinson’s career is a really interesting one as other people have said - he had international success but little at club level until he left England and went to Toulon at the start of their big spending that won them several European Cups. Quite a few players have gone there just to take the money but Wilkinson was an absolute hero for them and it led to him playing arguably the best rugby of his career as he retired as their talisman. 2 videos I’d recommend on him are his drop goal against the Saracens in the European semi final where Owen Farrell tries tackling him as he scores a drop goal to seal the game and they share a moment, and the Guinness advert about Jonny Wilkinson which shows how he took to Toulon and they took to him which was the best place for him given the mental struggles he faced.
Absolutely love these videos, only thing I’m worried about now is that your channel has peaked with that dig at Owen Farrell at 5:30 😉😂

If it does and the tackler does bring him back down feet hitting the ground first, the tackler will be penalised or potentially get a red card depending on severity of impact to ground. Wilkinson is the best rugby player I've ever seen play in my opinion, the only player that could transform a maybe 6 or 7th best nation at the time in a 1st best alone, in 2007 England and South Africa played in the first phase and South Africa demolished England without Wilkinson (injured) by almost 40 points, Wilkinson got better and destroyed everyone, and a team that shouldn't have won the quarter finals end up in the finals and lost to SA by 1 try, a complete different team with him, England is always a competitive team regardless, but they were far weaker than the south nations in Wilkinson era, he was the equalizer, some people say that Dan Carter was better because he scored more points, but let's face it Carter score more points with the absolute best team in the world giving him the position to score, while Wilkinson had a decent England behind him, today's England is miles ahead of the one he played for, but his England was more successful because of him alone, he is praised as one of the best and that is still a huge overlook on how great a player he was, the best kicker the best defender but the best maestro of plays, his strategic game was near perfect, I loved watching him play more than any other player and I'm not even a huge England fan, I'm a huge Argentina fa, but Wilkinson is for me even better than Hugo Porta and that's a lot.

      @pedrothevenard 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jmfoxall7230 Sheridan was for sure a monster in that game but Wilkinson was the one that gave the time for the forwards to catch some breath between plays, rugby more than any other game depends on everyone doing there parts, if even 1 player is having a bad day the hole team can suffer greatly, that also apply on the other way around, meaning a single player rarely transform a team no matter how good he is, there are exceptions though, and Wilkinson for me is the biggest exception, but England 07 for sure had some great performances from individual players and that helped a lot, including an aging Jason Robison that left everything he had on the field playing a great tournament, but Wilkinson was just better than anyone else, even though 07 wasn't his best year, he did miss a couple drop goals in the finals but let's face it the only reason England even got there was him.

Hi. Enjoyed the video (keep'em coming!), but am somewhat confused. You say it is part of the 2019 RWC review, yet Sir Jonny retired from rugby in 2014 ...
No worries, he deserves all the accolades he gets !

Odd that the video is missing probably his best and most game-changing tackle, 6 nations against Serge Betson who being the much bigger man tried to charge and run through him. Johnny timed the tackle to perfection and drove him up and back putting Betson on his arse. It was a close game right at the end of the first half, but that tackle encouraged team mates and they went on to win.
Of course Betson got revenge later with the infamous late hit in the 2003 WC.

If you lift the player beyond parallel you are responsible to see that he is returned safely to ground. (ie. not dumped or spiked ) otherwise it is a yellow card and if force used to dump a straight red card. (Ireland)

Have to say I A that you fell for the same idea that so many before you and at the time made. Jonny hits the French winger No14 Emile Ntamack great player he was but Jonny didn't turn him. Ntamack did that himself and many players as mini and juniors were coached to do as such so that when they came to ground they were laying with back to the oppo and the ball presented to your own players. Still a great tackle though because Emile was a hard player and certainly not one of the back row Jane's. Needless to say there will be some who disagree with the above, so be it. Keep enjoying this game of ours, well done.

I wished often that he wouldn't do it so much--I'm sure it contributed to the long run of injuries he suffered after the 2003 World Cup, but I suppose he would not have been the same player without.
You should have a look at the workout/warm-up routine that he designed for himself on top of normal training--that would make you gasp on its own!

Being small in rugby isnt as bad as people think. I played for a while and im 5'2, i mean yes we get hit and learn to fly lol but we can tackle too. we just have to used the right form 99% of the time, and we feel every hit, ours and theirs haha you just learn to deal with being winded from most hits.

Its defintely not common for a ten to defend like that. Another good defensive ten was steven Jones for Wales. However, most ten's can tackle these days. Jonny's injuries are notorious and what cut his international career short. Look at his list of injuries, it is literally insane. However in his prime there wasn't much better.
