What I don’t understand is how this is self defense. Yes, halia initially instigates and attacks bryanna. At 1:01:54 halia slaps bryanna, but then while still looking at Bryanna HALIA BEGINS WALKING AWAY. 1:01:55 Bryanna swiftly pulls the knife out and does a stab in the air, simultaneously, halia while is backtracking away at that time. Bryanna literally steps towards halia while brandishing the knife, while halia takes another step back, Bryanna is still coming closer and halia makes the descision to fight not flee, all of this in a split second. Bryanna could have taken the slap and tried to leave, but after being slapped she decided (premeditation) she was going to get revenge. How this girl was allowed to get away with murder and call it self defense is deplorable and the court allowing it like citizens can’t see is insulting. This is murder.

It seems that the judge here is tired of young people fighting and the resulting loss of life, so that he's trying to make an example of her. I think he is wrong here because the video clearly shows she tried to leave without fighting at the onset of a scary and dangerous situation. If he insisted on a sentence, it should have been no more than 6 months in jail due to her clean record. How unfair and disappointing this case is.

The judge states, "You never bring a knife to a fistfight." - the accused did not come to a fistfight, nor did she fail to attempt to leave. In my opinion, both the Judge and the prosecutor should be disbarred. It was NEVER a fistfight - it was an attack that was repealed with a weapon, as is our right to self-defense. The victim is the instigator and the criminal. Her brother is an accessory to the crime.

The judge acting like a fist fight is ok. I was bullied in high school. A girl i didn't even know harassed me. Walking in between classes i was knocked down in the hall. If there had been cameras in the 1980's even though i did not fight back, I might have gotten suspended. Wow. Once the video was shown, it becomes more clear why the defendant in this case could have been exonerated at trial. I cried at the family's grief, but the video shows the victim was not innocent and was looking for a fight.

What I don’t understand is how this is self defense. Yes, halia initially instigates and attacks bryanna. At 1:01:54 halia slaps bryanna, but then while still looking at Bryanna HALIA BEGINS WALKING AWAY. 1:01:55 Bryanna swiftly pulls the knife out and does a stab in the air, simultaneously, halia while is backtracking away at that time. Bryanna literally steps towards halia while brandishing the knife, while halia takes another step back, Bryanna is still coming closer and halia makes the descision to fight not flee, all of this in a split second. Bryanna could have taken the slap and tried to leave, but after being slapped she decided (premeditation) she was going to get revenge. How this girl was allowed to get away with murder and call it self defense is deplorable and the court allowing it like citizens can’t see is insulting. This is murder.

She pulled the knife out instantly. After sending text prior that she was gonna cut her. I’m not saying the fight was okay by any means, but self defense is not the case here. She had an out. She took a slap. She could have pulled her phone out and called the cops. She could have ran. She could have done many things in the time it took for her to pull a knife out, and then move forward towards her. She went in for a kill. That is not self defense, and it is embarrassing that our justice system let her get away with only 3 years. I got more time for forgery and there was literally no victim in my crime!

It seems that the judge here is tired of young people fighting and the resulting loss of life, so that he's trying to make an example of her. I think he is wrong here because the video clearly shows she tried to leave without fighting at the onset of a scary and dangerous situation.
If he insisted on a sentence, it should have been no more than 6 months in jail due to her clean record. How unfair and disappointing this case is.

The video told a story that the aggressor was not the defendant in this case. The brother who was shown filming the events leading to the fight clearly he should be blamed for encouraging the fight to go on it’s sad because a young lady lost her life for nothing. An argument that lead to this unfortunate tragedy.

I would agree if BOTH the teenage victim brought a knife but she was unarmed against the killer who was armed with a knife (cause of death since you failed to hear the facts in the case) who made T. The judge states, "You never bring a knife to a fistfight." - the accused did not come to a fistfight, nor did she fail to attempt to leave. In my opinion, both the Judge and the prosecutor should be disbarred. It was NEVER a fistfight - it was an attack that was repealed with a weapon, as is our right to self-defense.
The victim is the instigator and the criminal. Her brother is an accessory to the crime.

The judge acting like a fist fight is ok. I was bullied in high school. A girl i didn't even know harassed me. Walking in between classes i was knocked down in the hall. If there had been cameras in the 1980's even though i did not fight back, I might have gotten suspended. on top of that she is in a public space and could have called for help if she was so scared of her but she too wanted to teach her a lesson pay attention to the texts were read by the mom the defendant had intentions to fight her as well and wanted to teach her a lesson so it was mutual and she expected the victim to come at her because she was the one who started the whole wanting to start a fight. Not taking sides it just makes more sense

NOPE. If you watch the video really closely, yes, she got slapped. But, she immediately grabbed her KNIFE, stepped forward while the other girl was BACKING UP, and stabbed her immediately. Sorry, that is not self-defense. That is attacking. If somebody only slaps you, the defense is not stabbing them.

I cant fight, even if i didn't have a weapon i'd use whatever i had to hit back, car keys, phone, my shoes, ect. they lived in columbus, its a dangerous city i dont blame people for walking around with protection.

@@verabolton What's scary is the widespread insistence on passivity in the face of aggression. Attacks don't end because for 3 seconds the attacker backs up, and people are maimed for life all the time in "fistfights".
Watch how often perps fighting with cops will retreat then lunge again. If she'd shouted "I give up/fight over/etc" with hands up maybe you'd have a point but it's just insanity to insist that the moment an attacker takes a single step back, the fight is over you aren't allowed to defend yourself any longer.
