Jonas Kaufmann sings with passion. The most moving rendition of this aria that I have ever heard. He deserves his reputation as the greatest living tenor.
Yes very beautifull , a diferent interpretation with a lot of piano and mezza voce i like it . My personall favorite is Mario del Monacos version 1959 Bolshoi , sang live from spectacle without micro.
A wonderful performance by the magnificent singer Jonas Kaufman the arias José from the opera by Georges Bizet «Carmen» with charming words = «See how holy I keep the flower that you gave me. He was in prison with me, and he kept his delicate smell. There have been long nights there, having slightly closed his tired eyes, your dear image, I imagined». The most touching performance of this aria I have ever heard. A wonderful orchestra with wonderful musicians with brilliant technique and filigree playing under the guidance of Konstantin Orbelian = the best vocal conductor of our time. Thank you for the pleasure you give to your fans.
How come when an awesome singer sings, some people always find the negative side of him or her, and point out the weakness with regards to technique, resonance , etc. I hope that the people finding faults can sing better than him. Just enjoy the beauty of their performance and enjoy the talent, and ability they are showing after hard work. We are blessed that we have talented people showing what they can offer as this singer! Enjoy and shut up.
THANK YOU ENDLEEEEES !!! INCREDIBLE BEAUTIFUL VOICE !!! BRAVO DEAR JONAS !!! BRAVO DEAR FANTASTIC MUSICIANS !!! BRAVO DEAR FANTASTIC MAESTRO !!! BRAVO FOR THE FANTASTIC CHOIR !!! THE PLEASURE IS FULL !!! HUGE THANK YOU !!! WITH LOVE FROM SOFIA - BULGARIA
Frank Mylius. My mother was a soprano I am a tenor, I have hearing opera from my chilwood. Kaufmann is for me the best tenor in this moment, I think that you are who do not knnow nothing about opera neither human voice.

When he let's the warmth and brightness come through he's one of the greatest, IMO. But the vacillating timbres can be distracting at times. His dedication to the piano high note is notable. That requires an extraordinarily well-balanced technique. Would love to see him live.
WOW! The greatest ever pianissimo I've ever heard at Et j'étais une chose à toi (min. 3:45). Domingo sings this phrase at full voice; Carreras resorts to falsetto, but Kaufmann sings it in pure full voice in the most delicate pianissimo which reminds me of the great Franco Corelli who, inspite of the size of his voice could produce incredible and long diminuendos. It was about time someone like Kaufmann come alone and show that this technique doesn't belong only to great sopranos. Great document
He must have been speaking French since his youth. Wonderful tone and technique, complete immersion into his character, altogether an impressive performance.
Absolutely! His technique is ironclad. A pianissimo so soft and sweet and yet so solidly supported and powerful at the same time is quite uncommon. Those who don't like his voice.. well we all have different tastes, but to criticize his technique is just pure ignorance.
This guy is aewsome singing, he studied and end of story, and i only accept bad critics if they have some technical resources to prove what they are saying...cos i'm a singer too, and i studied hard to that...Its not easy to sing like him!!!
@stepasb You are right that the Lithuanian Jonas is for Johann or John or Juan, but this is Jonas (in Czech we have Jan for Johann and Jonáš for Jonas :-) ) It comes from Hebrew, Jonah was the person who was swallowed by a whale in a Biblical story. I love Wikipedia :-)
"substandard singing of course" "singing like a frog" I guess that's why he sings in all major opera houses and gets the excellent reviews, right? Gah, I love TH-cam Experts!
No, my opinion is that they are great, and so happen to think many other people, so I guess my taste is not entirely wrong. There are no "better days". Singers have always been great, only now they are compared to the singers of the past, by people like you. Tell me, do you have any more authority than me? Are you a famous singer, professor, or at least critic? You think these singers are bad, I think they are great. Thanks for sharing your opinion.
I have heard from a friend who is working on the opera in Paris, that they are working with some architectural tricks when Kaufmann sings, in order to raise his resonance. He has no overtones at all with this technique. Thats also the reason he always try to sing not behind the orchestra. Very interesting! Take care Frankie
@NathanaelSaintCyr What you don't know is that singing in the falsetto or at least a supported falsetto (called falsettone) above the f-sharp was normal for tenors until around the turn of the twentieth century. The first high C sung in modal voice was sung either in 1831 in Lucca or 1837 at the Grand Opera de Paris in a performance of Rossini's William Tell by Gilbert-Louis Duprez. So the use of a supported falsetto to sing the high b-flat is entirely within the style of the time...
to me he is a Dramatic tenor..not the lyric or bel canto we seem to be used to more so these days. and this is a different approach in so many areas of the voice. Excellent as far as I am concerned... a teacher /singer here.
It's amazing how opinions on Kaufman sharply and extremely differ! Some people adore him, others think he's a pure operatic mistake. Some time ago critics recognised him as one of the 20 best operatic singers ever. In a word, he is very controversial. But unique, too. In my opinion he is unequal, irregular - sometimes breathtaking, sometimes simply poor. His voice too often sounds artificial and too throaty, but is also very interesting, and in quite a lot of pieces - beautiful. There are things he has sung excellently - for example "Pourqoi me reveiller" in Opera Bastille, (but not at MET). In this video recording the piano in the end is magnificent.
What's the difference between not knowing and lacking knowledge? No, it's not about this video, it's about the principle. You just don't write that they sound like a frog, whoever they are, because it's impolite ;-) If you're not patronizing, you sound so, you should do something about it. I don't switch the comments off because I love discussion :-) Of course I can comment on your videos, the point is that I don't, because there would be no point to it.
Kaufmann imprsses me the most with French. A bit of a critique here- there's something too dark about his vowels. I'm not dissing him as a singer- he has a beautiful instrument, but I think what makes him special is that he is very expressive for a singer with his voice size. I just worry about his projection and ultimate career longevity singing with that much darkness. I've never heard anyone keep it up past late 40's. He must be very strong to be able to do it so consistently now.
The point is, art is not a competition. The point is, it's relative. The point is, you don't see me commenting on Del Monaco's videos. I didn't mean to offend you, I meant to show you that you don't have to patronize others - what you do, it was you who started it, I merely reacted, because I feel responsible for my vids. You assume that I don't know anything about singing because I like whom I like. Oh, yeah, "nice high notes, not as bad as the other Kaufmann videos" is as positive as my ....
@alexgomez2 If you can find it, Jon Vickers sings this with a very good pianissimo. Darker tenors tend to really keep the sound open because anything else will cause a crack. Open sound = dynamic control. Many tenors who have a good sound also tend to place too much resonance in the nose, this can limit dynamic control because of the reflexive tension in the jaw that tends to occur. James King was another fantastic tenor that had a rich grasp of dynamic control.
alexoomez2, I fully agree with you everything has been so clear and precise, the false form of singing and Domingo is unbearable, and the Great Franco Corelli is as you put it. You do justice in his opinion. Thank you very much for that.
wOw ,this guy is awesome ,i like his differ voice from the likes Pava ,Caruso, Di Stefano .If you studied music u wont argue about this guy ,we not all gonna be Lyric or dramatic etc .Without comparing him with anyone his the best, i can learn something from him. He's got good and unique technique. e.g in a competition we can all sing nice but only one is gonna win it ,the one with good ,differ ,sharp minded etc.
@stepasb My brothers name is Jónas ,I am from Iceland.tomorrow I will hear Mr. Kaufmann sing in the new Opera/Conserthall in Iceland.Listen to his great "Ingemisco"......Kári Friðriksson, tenor from Iceland.
Please, be generous, let him a small chance! J. Kaufmann is singing for almost 20 years a very large repertoire, I can't beleave he would be still working if he had not a very sure and strong technique. Only technique allows him to give art in his solar or dark renditions of Berlioz, Bethoveen, Verdi, Mozart, Schubert, Puccini, Strauss etc... As you say "let see how long"...
The point is, I don't *love* Kaufmann, but I respect him. The fact that somebody is not your cup of tea doesn't mean that they are bad! Sure, I will enjoy music, but I'm worried that you won't! :-) Anyway, thaks for your offer. Truce! :-)
@NathanaelSaintCyr In my opinion, he is a lyric tenor with nice colourful voice (Carreras voice type), but he is making additional color pushing his tongue back (we can clearly see it) and projecting his voice through the lower jaw. And he is doing piano though hiding his voice behid... this is what my teacher names as "piano quasi niente" ;oP Well, he wasn`t lucky with his teacher maybe.
In other words, all the opinions on Kaufmann which differ from your own are automatically invalidated because your mother was a soprano, because you are a tenor and because you have been hearing opera since your ''chilwood''. Amazing logic. Keep it on.
@myskylark thank yuo for the explanation, anyway, it doesn't concern that much with the category of his voice., what i hear , has nothing to do with that but with artificiallity. that is evident, any little trained ear can hear that something isn't right at all in his sound, thats my opinion, i have heard meny many different singers, most of them tenors, and never heard such sound
@NathanaelSaintCyr The singer who turned the use of modal voice all the way up to the top of the vocal range into the gold standard of singing for tenors was Enrico Caruso with all of his recordings. I might add that many people considered his vocalism rather vulgar when he was starting out, preferring the more falsettone production of Jean De Reszke...
Mr.Kauffman,is a great singer, more baritonal, but his high notes are incredible, just like Caruso, who was from Naples, they said Caruso was really a baritone, but he was dramatic tenor.incredible high C's.Pavarotti was a pure lyric tenor, like his idol,Bjorling, but Bjorling was actually a spinto/Lyric tenor.
martin matsil Even though all of the recordings by Caruso were acoustic, we can hear that he had a dark, rich sound. That is one reason I prefer Domingo over Pavarotti....Anyway, this was a beautiful rendition of the "Flower Song."
....and Wagner! Don't you like his Lohengrin? his Wesendonck lieder? That piece cannot be sung without a fabulous technique to give such elegant artistry as his. Forgive me, I am too enthousiatic!
Why do directors think they have to get shots of a harp or the violin section instead of the performer? I know other instruments are present you don't have to remind me. 🙄
Jonas Kaufmann beautiful voise.Thank you for charing this video. Love it.💖💖💖

Nadeto Mirkova Hello there, my Father won the Queen's Prize there, singing the same piece in the 60's...

Bravissimo, dear Jonas Kaufmann !!!

Who has sung it with more passion and vocal beauty!
MERCI!

Ça, c'est Don José. Beauté et douceur de la voix.
BRAVO
Still enamored
Quite wonderful!
Ahhh...he sings the high note at 3:45 perfectly- nice and gently like it is supposed to be sung....
Krásný tenor! Zážitek z jeho zpěvu mohu klidně přirovnat k interpretaco J. Carrerase ! Díky - budu sledovat jeho další videa.

Exquisitive as usual!
I adore his high "Toi" pianissimo. It's unbelievable.
Marvelous!!!

Takes my breath away!
Bella Aria de Carmen
Exceptionnel
remarkable; i don't know a word of what he said but it touched me deeply.
