I lived in SE Idaho years ago and never went bear hunting since I didn't know anyone that could mentor me. I'm glad you didn't fall into the same trap. Best of luck on your hunt.
Just commenting to say, "Thanks", for the bear hunting videos, sharing the film permit issues, etc. I hope this continues to be worth your time and effort.
Just started hunting last year in Arizona. It actually all began after I stumbled across the chocolate thunder episode. Since then I have been out eight times and spent 26 days in the Arizona wilderness in search of bear. I saw one for about three seconds from 1000 yards away last fall but couldn’t close the distance soon enough. In 15 days I am going to spend another five days in the Arizona alpines and I hope I’ll be able to bring down a slobbering boar. Wish me luck!
Plain and simple, We all love the content, the effort of keeping it real, and informative. Look at all post stating how much you and Ryan have motivated, influenced, and educated a lot of folks to go on that first bear hunt. I have been wondering myself what happened to this past springs videos (hands down best out there), and it wasn't until I watched this podcast that I understood what had happen. Thank you, and if I can help the cause sign me up!
I have said this in comments before Brian, but I can directly relate you and Ryan’s videos to the reason I got into bear hunting and killed my first bear last fall. Your message is reaching the people and making an impact directly. Don’t stop that fight to get your content out there! It’s working! I can promise you, you have an audience that is listening and will follow or help wherever we can. Keep up the great work!
This spring will be my first spring bear season in the mountains. 100% inspired by gritty videos. It looks grueling so im in. Flying out in March to learn from some guys nice enough to share their time for a very fair price 😁
We have bears running around in suburban Los Angeles. See them almost every day. They like eating our avocados, figs and starfruit. Lots of big bears in California. It is all spot and stalk now that they banned hounds.
I'm very interested in this topic and never get tired of your tips and techniques. I'm looking to go on my first bear hunt this fall and it is tough finding tips on finding fall bears. It would be nice if Colorado had a spring season due to the chance of getting one and the amount of information on them. Keep up the good work!
Love the Gritty content! Bear hunting is real and I like the attention as a hunter. Purchasing equipment and planning. I appreciate our resources and plan on using them.
Yes the over reach of the government is ridiculous across the broard..all sportsman from off roaders to kayaker too mnt climbers need to stick together and fund each others causes...more power in numbers...what ever the cause push back on government overreaching.
Your 100% right, i live in comifornia and as soon as i burn up my 20years of non residents points ive accumulated in five western states. ...ill just save my money and buy land owner tags every few years....residents are screwing them selves out of revenue by raising tags and license on non residents...
az spring is mostly draw and difficult with some otc fall is otc, but bear is run off a quota system here have to call every wendsday and check what closed theyll be everywhere from desert pricklypear patches (even middle of summer) all the way up into the high country in the pine/aspens
2nd on show showing cooking especially canned bear. What happened to your old gritty movies on TH-cam? Wanted to share w a buddy to get him to come out with me. Chocolate thunder year was the best. Keep up the good work.
Being a Midwest whitetail hunter, I doe mewed at the first bear I shot to stop her. I probably should have stopped her a bit farther then 10 yards away. She looked towards me, barred her teeth, and huffed. I didn't giver her time to move any more. I dumped the arrow and had about a 40 yard blood trail to retrieval. What a rush!
My son and I are going on our 1st ever bear hunt the 1st week of May. Until I saw your bear videos (before they were taken down) I didn't consider hunting because I was not going to hunt over a donut pile. Thanks for the inspiration. Hunting Montana and can't wait. Thanks for all you do, love your stuff.
Great topic Brian! Hoping to chase my first bear this year! Hate what y’all are having to go through with the permits. Know that y’all have a ton of support and love behind y’all! Hope to cross paths on the mountain one day and share a fire! Thanks for all you do!
They wouldn’t come. Sadly most of those guys out of state don’t support the California wildlife conservation. They’d rather bash everyone in the state for being “commies”’or hippies. Unfortunately their concept of the state is the reflection of LA and the bay area.
You're correct about California! We also don't have a spring bear season. I've had too many bear encounters with black bears in California to count. The thought of whether to run is the right thing to do, is well kind of the fight or flight response that you really don't think about at the time. You just respond to the situation. I once had two little cubs jammin my way. I was looking for the sow when I felt my pant leg being shaken like a dog had it. And that is when I saw her charge! I spun and ran down hill. But when I did, I accidently kicked the cub under the chin and it yelped. I thought, oh crap, I'm going to die! I ran about 30 yards, looked back and thankfully they were gone!
Hey, Brian. Thanks for all the great info. I'm just venturing into bear hunting and trying to soak up as much info as possible. Also, as someone in the film and television business (yes, here in "Comi-fornia" ;-) ), I appreciate your comments on filming in the national parks/public land. The permitting process is waaaaay too onerous. However, I have a slightly different view about the government motives. The laws, when written, simply didn't contemplate someone like you, and other back country hunter/filmmakers. I think the laws - naivé though they are - are meant to actually protect the wild places. They didn't contemplate small footprint filmmakers and filmmaking technology. Most film crews are large and all too often disrespectful of the locations in which they shoot. What's good is you, as a leading innovator in the space, can become the means by which these laws are updated. So I think it's probably more accurate and more beneficial to start seeing yourself as part of the law-making process as opposed to seeing a more nefarious government agenda here. The government policy machine is large, unwieldy and so generally a lagging indicator of the needs of its people. But we participate in that process and bring change. "...what is the government but the people?"
The “machine “ you refer to is run by people who have no idea how to manage wild life. They have no compression of the data they are given by hunters and biologists. They are thieves. And we pay the price.
Message at the end was solid as some have already stated. Stay positive Brian and family, this gov. Bs will hopefully be behind you soon. Keep up the good work
Enjoyed the conversation. I listen to most of what you put out as I have time. Look forward to Kevin Tim or Timm. Have him explain why my next pack should be seek outside instead of the other makers. Probably one of my favorite with him as a guest last time he was with you. I love listening to a man that is passionate about what he does.
Loved the episode. The first bear I harvested years ago didn't taste great to me. I have been planning on harvesting my second and giving it another honest try. I'd love to hear your process and some recipe suggestions for this canned bear you spoke so highly of!
We just got some more snow here in South central Alaska... soooo it'll be a little bit longer till they start coming out. But great timing with this video 🤙🤔

Would you recommend bear meat over any of those or just continue to focus elsewhere. No way I'll be able to eat all 4 in a year
Awesome. You guys talk about canned meat all the time... But I can't find out how to use it for cooking? Could you guys make some videos or explain some uses of this canned meat? Is it like stewed meat? Could you use it as a taco ingredient? It's nothing like a steak I'm assuming
I grew up on canned deer and its great on rice or mashed potatoes. Only needs to be warmed up cuz its already cooked. I suggest barely braising the meat in butter and oil and onion with some paprika so it comes out a rich brown color and add the juices into the jar. If you cold pack it comes out gray and weird looking
I’ve listened to so many of your podcast’s and seems you never mention Utah. Is this not a good hunting state? I’m curious because I’m starting to hunt bear and I’m trying for Utah because I live here. Is it a waste of my time?

Yes finally!!!! I snagged my first bear tag here in Idaho and I have NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL IM DOING!!!! 😂😂😂

I'm in my 50's and going spring bear hunting because I saw your terrific video. Thanks very much from Alberta
Same here! Alberta boy, heading out west to try to bag a spring bear.
@@tristadavid - I’m in Calgary. Going west as well. Literally don’t really know what I’m doing.
Plain and simple, We all love the content, the effort of keeping it real, and informative. Out here in the east coast mountains, and numerous people Love your mission and what gritty has continued to do! Defeat is for the weak, so persevere.

Wouldn’t that be nice if that support went towards helping the California hunters instead of pushing them aside l

I am planning a CA bear hunt this year because of you guys, thank you and stay gritty!
Where ish are you at in CA?
Me too
2nd on show showing cooking especially canned bear. What happened to your old gritty movies on TH-cam? Wanted to share w a buddy to get him to come out with me. Chocolate thunder year was the best. Keep up the good work.
Chocolate thunder was amazing.
Thanks for the great information. Hoping to fill my spring bear tag this year here in Oregon!!
There are a ton of grizzly in SE Idaho as well. Two poached this fall within 45 min of my house.
Loved the positive message towards the end of the video keep the good fight 💪🏻💪🏻👍👌keep them videos coming
Great topic Brian! Hoping to chase my first bear this year! Hate what y’all are having to go through with the permits. Know that y’all have a ton of support and love behind y’all! Hope to cross paths on the mountain one day and share a fire! Thanks for all you do!
Would love to show you guys some amazing fall bear hunting in NorCal!

Going to be bear hunting in CO this fall. We are going to be there for archery elk but could put in for a rifle bear tag at the same time. Talked to the district wildlife officer and he said we could carry bow and rifle. Emphasis will be on elk but can't pass up having a bear tag too. Any thoughts on strategy for fall bear hunt. Also, the film permits have never made sense to me. Keep fighting, love your content!
Just found this channel and loved the hunts. Particularly the bear hunts, I was always under the impression that bear hunting was meh because I thought you just chased them up a tree. These hunts are far more my speed. May actually look into hunting my area now
it is correct that bear season here in Colorado is only in the fall sadly.
Yes it is. I moved here a few years ago and plan on focusing on a bear hunt this year. It will be my first bear hunt and fall information is tough to get.
Thanks for pumping out the content!
Thanks for the great advice on bear hunting 👍stay gritty
been getting bears on my cameras here in Utah... they love moving my cameras
What about bear hunting Tennessee and Georgia?
I know Tennessee has decent bear hunting as well as Virginia.
I live in commiefornia. The bears are great but the people suck. Especially in the big city's
Brian would you ever consider taking a Disabled Hunter out on a Bear hunt? "Hank The Tank " bad wheels bad back good shot.
I've hunted bears. Got 2 in my life. My problem is if I go out west and get lucky enough to take an elk, mule deer and antelope then a bear doesn't seem as appealing. I eat what I shoot. Would you recommend bear meat over any of those or just continue to focus elsewhere. No way I'll be able to eat all 4 in a year
Im terrible at bear hunting the never have any donuts left when I get to the stand
Brian,
What size peep do you run on your Garmin X-zero?
Keep up the good work 👍🏻 Motivating.
My wife also uses it for deer fried rice chinese style
SNITCHES GET STITCHES. Had to have been a hunting guide service that came forward with a complaint.
I’ve listened to so many of your podcast’s and seems you never mention Utah. Is this not a good hunting state? I’m curious because I’m starting to hunt bear and I’m trying for Utah because I live here. Is it a waste of my time?
There's over 30000 bears in California just not a huge success rate
Any interest in hunting Wisconsin?
Hey Brian, I received a questionnaire asking if I found this contact offensive. I’ve never seen that before on TH-cam. You should be aware.
Thank you for the heads up. I'm sure they are trying to crack down on hunting and pew pew content.
Excellent 👊🏻👍🏻
