It's interesting how Amyrillis, a literal bully, is actually a better friend to Snapdragon than anyone else in the entire show about "best friends" is to any of their friends. Their friendship feels genuine, because even though they're very different as people, they're supportive of one another and makes it easy for me to see why they're friends. This ends up being frustrating, though, because if they could do that with them, what the hell kept them from making the four main girls' friendship natural and believable? Oh, right. They thought if they just said they were friends, we'd instantly believe and like it.

@@Crobat7269 LobsterHero is doing a full breakdown of the entire series episode by episode because he wanted to give it a fair shake, rather than dogpile. It somehow gets even worse, as characters constantly contradict themselves or seemingly only exist for brief moments. One of the main takeaways so far is that outside of the terrible writing, there is a absolutely no structure to the story. It’s never established what guardians actually “do”. The whole idea that this massive school only has like 4 teachers is kinda bonkers as well. He also agrees that the only good/okay-written characters in the whole series are Amaryllis, Snapdragon, and to a lesser extent Aster. They actually have traits that make them flawed-but-likable, compared to the annoyingly angsty self-inserts.

Just listening to this review I can agree with that. I mean the show itself basically just drags him down with it's writers toxic hatred of masculinity ruining his background and forcing certain plot points onto him just so the writers can express how much they openly want all men to die.
But seperate him from the toxic writing and as a character he sounds great and would do great with better writing that's trying to be entertaining and not trying to preach ideology and woke politics to people.

Concept art showed Snapdragon was going to be more of a brooding bishounen, but the writers pretty much are saying that pretty boys can't exist as boys whether they're straight or gay. It comes off as them trying to "atone" for loving older BL series/characters that are now considered "problematic" today. Which Raye admitted to in an interview.

@LTNetjak Right. Personally, I think that we should accept characters being diverse and it not being a big part of their character. If the fact that a character is trans hasn’t been relevant in 3 seasons, that’s fine! You don’t have to have a racism side plot every season when you have a person of color in your main cast, everyone just sees them, recognizes they have that trait, and moves on.

It's a good thing this shitshow wasn't popular or influential, and was regard as the crap pile it truly was. I would hate if someone watched this at a young age and felt like the only way to be feminine or masculine is to transition. Also, it seems very predatory that the adult trans teacher is telling the teenage boy about transitioning, and then waving off that there are other ways of achieving his goal. Seems pretty scummy and manipulative.

@@kurusgyros7365 I wound up being extremely traditionally masculine but with also a feminine side. I work with firearms for a living, I provide a significant proportion of my own sustenance by hunting, I love violent entertainment, I am a certified lech, swear constantly, love bourbon, and my favorite color is pink, I have 4 cats, I eat up romance novels, do the cooking at home, and get manicures. And I feel extremely manly and love being a man. With all the muscles, sweat, aggression, and humor that comes with it. And if I met a woman who loves Harley Davidson, death metal, machine guns, and blacksmithing, but also knitting, makeup, dresses, weddings, and romcoms, I'd take her at her word as to who she is and what she likes, without trying to force assume a gender that she must have. Most people have a mix between masculine and feminine traits. For example, my sergeant would seem like a prototypical Western man, down to the Sam Elliott stasche, and he worked as a roughneck for 8 years with the missing fingers to prove it. And he loves baking and sharing his newest confections with the rest of the staff. The barmaid in town is absolutely 200% mega girly, and also has a thing for the goriest horror movies out there, and has an interest in real life grisly stories and images. The idea you have to fit perfectly into Box A or Slot B is patently ridiculous. If I had children, I would tell them about this freedom of self.

I really cannot stand how the show is like “if you have feminine traits, become a woman”.
I am just upset seeing how the professor was just like “become a woman and all your problems are solved!!” That’s just not the way to learn about accepting yourself as you are.
To me, Snapdragon wasn’t going for “I wanna be a woman.” He was going for “I am a guy but I wanna be strong in the graceful way girls are like.”
Painting nails doesn’t mean he has to be a woman to do it. Wearing dresses doesn’t mean he needs to be a woman to do it.
We live in a world where men wear nail polish of any colour. Where even old men are free to wear skirts and dresses. Where guys can dress up as female characters in an anime or game!!! The writing just shows the lack of awareness the writing team really has on the societal issues.
The show rly tried too hard with the representation that they not only upset the LGBTQ demographic, they forgot how to make a story make sense.

I will say the best thing that came out of the anime was the memes, that makes me excited to see the abridged version when it comes out. I agree that the story is bad and this is why Japanese light novels and manga are an essential check point before investing millions of dollars into an animated production, it would also explain why the show got rejected by Frederator and once before by Crunchyroll. If they cut a lot of the fat from this series like episode 1, 11 and 12, started with a reworked episode 7 where the dungeon is the entrance exam, episode 6 as a aptitude exam to see what tracks the cast will be going down and ended the series with episode 8, 9 and 10, then put that extra time into world building and character devolopment like having Café that Aloe and Anise own and run, a place where Rosemary and Sage work and other characters visit like Professor Caraway (never liked that "we go to the same parties line" when we see no parties), explaining what a Guardian is and their role in the world and having a martial training montage (show us how Rosemary suddenly got good at using a sword).

It's likely she was dealing with a lot of stress due to struggling with new magic (including fearing her mother's reaction about practicing new magic) and the bullying from Amaryllis (and Professor Redbud to some extant). So it's understandable for her to break down and cry from Thyme's minor comment being the last straw, because when you get a lot of stress built up, even the smallest inconvenience can make you snap.
The problem was that every single character got on Thyme's ass for "bullying Sage", including Sage herself, when all she did was agreeing with Amaryllis that they were wasting time (They got stuck working on a task after class because Sage was not willing to use new magic to do it). He was just the last straw to send me into a meltdown. It wasn't his fault, and the next day I pulled him aside to apologise in private.
If Sage had a similar arc she would have been a much more interesting character. Learning to take responsibility for your emotions is a hard thing, and learning to manage them is even harder. Especially for teenagers.

And to be a little bit fair, there's also the fact that in an earlier scene that episode Thyme expressed her opinion on New Magic, which was, verbatim: "I don't mess with that shit." So Thyme being okay with using New Magic just to get an assignment over with and not standing with or helping Sage on her stance would sting.
Sage still overreacted, though. Big time. And like you said, the show still tried to treat it like it was Thyme's fault and she was attacking Sage, which just wasn't the case.

Thyme didn't even bother contributing to the assignment. That's what everyone SHOULD have been angry at her for, but they weren't.
In fact, I think we could have a more stable story if we swapped Sage's and Thyme's roles - Thyme asking if she could do the assignment with her Old Magic, Amaryllis and Redbud shaming her, and Sage being too intimidated to speak in Thyme's defense (at first). Heck, this could have been the episode that affirms how Thyme is "terrible at magic" (as she claims in Ep10) and been what gets Rosemary and Sage to open up to her more.

Snapdragon still grinds my nervess because he shows off the writers Misandry.
They go out of their way to make most of the straight male characters really unlikable, stupid or weak and they over do it with LGBT romances.
Then they give us snapdragon who is interested in Sage even though she kinda mean to him. Sage gives a pretty sexist talk about how girl freindships are deeper then guy friendship (which only shows off how out of touch with reality the 100% female writing staff is). Snapdragon dragon gets mad and pushes back on her but not because the writers think Sage is wrong about men and that she's being a horrible person, but because he's really trans. Snapdragon can have deep freindship because he's not really boy but a girl. Then he gets a "male' mentor in a transman (who use to be a woman which is better then being a cis male) and tell him to consider transitioning......I just realized how creepy that is for a teacher to tell that to his underage student.........
They ironically use snapdragon to enforce the idea that real straight men can't ever have emotions, or can't have deep freindships, and have to be tough 24/7. If you don't fit that description then you must not really be a guy but a girl (which the show thinks is superior).

Even with Snapdragon being a decent character, it ends up feeling like he's still only there to be used as *only* a trans plot to throw in the story and further their "men bad" themes that whether or not they're trying (looking at the personalities who are writers, I can't say I don't believe it's accidental) has been present throughout the show. He doesn't want to be big manly man, but that doesn't mean he *has* to be a girl to be happy, it's just another adult pushing him an opposite way that he could regret. He stood up to make the point that he's a boy and boys can have deep meaningful relationships when Sage said he couldn't, now it's ok that he has these relationships that other boys don't because "maybe he's actually a girl", and now she seems extra interested in him that he seems to let out more feminine traits. That also brings up the odd ship teasing, idk about everyone else but I wouldn't want to date someone who told me "you're a girl you can't do/feel this" and then start being attracted to me after I start acting or looking masculine in some way.

Also, the concept of big, tough, toxic masculinity kind of loses all meaning when you have crazy magic and an academy where children are taught to fight monsters or whatever.
Basically, hot take, Snapdragon's character arc doesn't make much sense in the world the show has created. Nor is he that compelling of a character. Just marginally more interesting than the rest of the god awful cast.

This take really irks me because it implys all trans identifying people jsut want to magically snap their fingers and be the other gender all the time. That might be true for some or even many but there's a huge portion of people who take transitioning in slow steps and the process is important. Coming to terms with yourself again and again during each step is part of the journey.
Being raised as one gender while feeling like another is not always a snap easy thing to change, even if you're 100% sure you belong as the other gender switching before you're ready can come with it's own complications and people who choose to take it slowly are also valid. People who are on the fence are valid.
This take implys that anyone who would think of hesitating or choosing to do it piece by piece isn't valid.

That moment when you try so hard to promote transgender as a normal thing, you loop right back around to being accidentally transphobic.
Honestly though, I think it's just a poor attempt at cramming two messages into one story that doesn't have room for it, and didn't think through the Worldbuilding. So they came up with one mcguffin, new magic, and used that to explain both the deteriorating environment, and the ability to change physical appearances, without considering the implications of that...

If you need a better show with diversity, let me remind you of The Owl House. It's a magical show with a confirmed Bisexual lead which, surprisingly, Disney didn't market as much. They even have a Non-binary character, which it didn't make a big deal. It's already good with proof that it can do great, whether in diversity or in a fantasy world. Sadly with how Disney is treating it, it's being cut more, which is why I'm talking about the show more than if it's just allowed to run as normal.
Either way, Dana Terrace should show these creators, and many others, how to do a diverse show right cause she really knocked it out of the park with this one.

There is another issue with Snap Dragon's story arc. Their reason for wanting to be a girl seems to be portrayed as a false premise that one cannot be soft, gentle, or like cute things, and also be a man. Does this character want to be a girl because they truly feel like a girl, or because they were railroaded into thinking that being a man is an obstacle to being able to express themselves? The later is shockingly common in the real world, a lot of people seem to try to be so progressive that they end up reinforcing traditional gender stereotypes by insisting that if you don't conform to those stereotypes, you must certainly not be the gender you think you are. I've been accused of being an "egg" (a trans person who doesn't know it yet) a few times now. And it's like... The simple answer as to why Mandrake was so dumb, is that it is clear the writers forgot to reflect on how scenes would portray the characters (though some would argue there is also a bias against masculine male characters). The lack of reflection on how characters are portrayed shows when Rosemary nearly cuts Thyme's head off in episode 1, shows no remorse and then gets in an argument with her for the sake of being portrayed as "quirky". Ruby from S1 of RWBY is quirky and she would never be that dumb.
It shows when Sage''s backstory revolves around her hesitance to use New Magic out of tradition because her mother distrusts it, and yet she sends her daughter to a school renowned for teaching it.
If Professor Callaway and Mandrake had been established as longtime enemies, the scene could have made sense.

Personally I haven't bothered to watch it. The initial trailer did not sell me on it, for the obvious reason, nor did the creators with their "diverse" almost-lady-exclusive writing room or controversy regarding the Kill All Men tweets. Perhaps I could have separated art from artist if I heard through the grapevine that it was actually good despite all that, but I think we know how things fell into place. I heard reviews much like yours and I was like "Nah, I'm good. No actually, I'm insulted that this shit is supposed to represent me and make me feel validated." Steven Universe this is not - and even then, Steven Universe knew to air on Cartoon Network and never took funds meant to go to completely different creative teams.
Just... no. No thanks. Not happening.
Surprisingly, since I have a free Crunchyroll account, I was even able to leave a review on the issues I have with the series even with the website itself knowing (or should know) that I haven't even sat through the episodes by themselves yet. Even snapdragon's arc is flawed. They try so hard to shoehorn in the trans-teens narrative that it doesn't make sense the slightest bit in this world. It makes me think that he's doesn't really want to be female, but rather a merman due to his obsession with mermaids. Him dressing as one on Halloween and just envious when the main characters turned into mermaids for that one episode.
And for a magical realm where anything is possible, why are the creators still obsessed with gender? I think the mermaid stuff alone is enough representation for the trans narrative instead of just shoehorning trans stuff in. There has to be something physically incompatible with snap becoming a mermaid. Like mermaids are of the water element and snap's element is fire so it's a 100% incompatible to become one, and I believe this would be so much more natural. And like why is him dressing as a mermaid even frowned upon when freaking mermen exists in their world?
And there is really no reason for Caraway to be trans in this show to be honest. They could have Caraway, who is biologically male not understand snapdragon's obsession with mermaids and have the desire to be one, but tell him that transitional magic could do this for transformation for him. Then this sets up snapdragon's story

After stealing our money, and never paying attention on making a better focused cartoon, Crunchyroll deserves no support from us Japanese cartoon fans. Not even Pretty Cure is fooling us to subscribe to Crunchyroll. Tubi has Pretty Cure, and deserves to have other seasons. Pretty Cure still deserves to be available on DVD with translated subtitles.
Design wise, it has more rounds than edges that they tend to make the characters look fat. That is why it is important to balance the curves and sharps to know which are the muscles, fat, chin, chest, arms, and legs for example. Japan can do simplistic character designs too, while still looking nice and distinguishable. A few that I can think of are Tetsuwan Atom, Sazae san, Doraemon, Kiteretsu, Esper Mami, Lucky Star, Yuyushiki, and Chibi Maruko chan.
Best to support anime by paying the animators and creators since Japan overworks and underpays people. We also want anime to be accurately translated for us to properly know if the series is good, properly decide if we like it, and respect the creators' intended works-even if the country is different from ours, and if the characters are not actually speaking the translated language in the foreign country language canon.

He's a guy who wants to both be strong like a man, but be beautiful and elegant like a woman. He also likes cute things. This doesn't really directly equate to the sole solution of him turning into a girl and then all problems get solved. If you're somewhat versed in Japanese anime, you can see a LOT of male characters exactly like what Snapdragon wants to become in those Shoujo or Reverse Harem anime already out there. The ones where you get a number of male characters for each "tastes" who can put even female characters to shame because the studio just decided the budget has to almost entirely be poured to make them gorgeous af and also way more often than not strong and talented story wise.

When dealing with story theme, there are two basic ways open to a creator:
The Good Way: Create a story where these themes either arise naturally or a "pre-existing" part of the world-building landscape. Bonus points if the story shows that not everything works out all the time -- even with the best of intentions.
The Bad Way: Take a theme and force it into a story without considering beforehand how well it will fit. Both the theme and the story will be damaged heavily by the time the rough edges are filed off. Knock points off if the creators don't bother with filing off the rough edges.
I couldn't get through the first episode, so I'll leave it to others as to which way the creators of HGS took.

Ever watch Christian entertainment? Or Objectivist movies? Or softcore genre fiction? It's all mostly just as horrible, for many of the same reasons.
And somehow, it keeps getting made, simply because enough people will hate it for the politics alone, that the negativity will serve as free advertising.
And it'll serve both an audience with low expectations and a meta audience that enjoys hating the material.
Bonus (from the corporate perspective): people who aren't talented enough to reliably deliver something really good are easier to tie down for long term contracts. If they wanted to really celebrate diversity, there are plenty writers and artists (of all races, gender expressions, faiths, etc) who could use the visibility, but they might also do something like criticize the corporate hand that feeds them.
Anyways, it looks like Crunchy Roll is just applying US Gold's approach to business - earn a reputation for delivering the best of overseas entertainment by aggressively pursuing licenses, then license unqualified teams to produce original trash on the cheap, which you own all the rights to. (Other studios have done this, but I know more about games than movies and television/streaming.)
If they don't get another season, it'll probably have more to do with their delays in delivering the product, rather than the product's quality. Shareholders are generally addicted to quick dopamine rushes.

Rosemary & Sage is basically the opposition of what Xena & Gabrielle were in Xena: Warrior Princess. They both started off as solo teammates with not being all much buddy buddy. But as letter episodes goes, they have share towards the feelings. Xena was trying to make up her mistakes from her past, while Gabrielle was just helping her and becoming as an fine warrior. The relationship with Xena & Gabrielle was experimental at the start to finish. Fighting for stopping bad guys, put an end to the war, solving national crisis, dealing with there mistakes and figured out the solution. Yeah. They have there own problems to each others from time to time. But they solved the problem out & makes up there mistakes. It makes both of them not just best friends, but really closer friends & even loved each other indeed. It what makes them an good chemistry. But this? This is anything but good chemistry.

But yeah, who thought this scene (16:42) was a good idea? We already have the scene of Snapdragon and Caraway before, but this one is more patronizing to the community that i'm feeling sorry for them being used like that. I'm convinced that the writers have no idea what they were doing, and considering that one of them hates men, i'm not suprised in the slightest. This show is probably never going to get a second season and ended in on a cliffhanger. We're living in a world where Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go and Alf never got a chance to get another season, yet High Guardian Spice was promoted so heavily that it damaged people's perception on Crunchyroll even more.

Hey, anyone read the old Teen Titans by Wolfman and Perez? They had an entire issue of just Raven and Starfire talking about their feelings. Was really good because, unlike this cartoon and a ton of other modern cartoons, they made people care about the characters first and earned, essentially, a soul searching story.
Reject being these people's unpaid therapists. Embrace good character development.
Also, on that snapdragon thing... Like, this was the point of a gentleman. Chivalry and courtly manners lead into the later gentleman. It was all about being gentle when you can gentle and being a *MAN* when you need to be a *MAN* . Even JoJo at least kinda got that idea in season 1.

i have seen all the episodes. I thought it was a meh series. I didn't thought it was bad but I also didn't thought it was good. There were a few things I did like.
But also people claiming for a possible season 2 makes me laugh since there won't be one. For one thing all the people who worked on it finished the series two years ago and all since then moved on to other projects. High Guardian Spice wasn't released for so long because Crunchyroll know the reception that they were going to receive was going to be the same as what they gotten today. And Crunchyroll being bought by Sony is why Crunchyroll released it since when Sony consolidate Crunchyroll into Funimation, they knew there would be a high chance that Sony wouldn't let the series be released unless they redid the entire series from scratch.

@@levievil9220 Well I finished watching the series, started a different story that has my attention at the moment but is still related. Basically these characters in a Danganronpa setting, plus three completely new characters just for this story. As for the one that I was thinking about writing at the time of this comment, I started it. Their first names are all color related Cora(for coral pink) is Rosemary, Maya=Sage, Ron(for Veronica purple) is kind of their Parsley. Iridia(for iridium) is Amaryllis and Thyme in one person. Grey=Mandrake. And although I still want it so that the overarching villains are not there, there's just like a small spaced out group of villains that will challenge the characters and help them grow as fighters and people. With only a few exceptions though, all characters are named after colors. You can find a link to where I'm writing all of this on my TH-cam page

TL;DR. I touched on this in another video, but I feel like Snapdragon's story doesn't work specifically for this show, not because of the writing or the other characters or anything like that... but because of the setting.
High Guardian Spice takes place in a fantasy world of magic where virtually anything is possible. They even mentioned in the episode that gender-changing magic exists and he could utilize it if he chooses to. Why is this a problem? Because it's not relatable!
If you're writing an arc like this, about a character struggling with their sexuality and/or gender-identity, you want this character to be relatable to any audience members who might be going through a similar situation. Someone who's actually struggling with their gender-identity should be able to see themselves in Snapdragon. That way, when he eventually makes it through his struggles and discovers who he's supposed to be (regardless of whether or not he chooses to transition), the viewer can see themself getting through their own struggles as well. "Transition Magic" throws all of that out the window.
In fairness, I'm not transgender, so I can't say this with 100% certainty. But I feel like it would be difficult for real life transgender people to relate to Snapdragon seeing how he can just drink a potion or cast a spell and instantly have any kind of body he wants! YOU CAN'T DO THAT IN REAL LIFE!!! You can't just make your gender dysphoria disappear with a wave of your hand! I think it fails because they tried making a trans character with relatable struggles in a world where said struggles wouldn't feasibly exist. I can understand the existence of transgenders in My Hero Academia, I can understand their existence in RWBY, but I can't understand it here!
Also, it doesn't help that one of the main reasons Snapdragon is questioning his gender identity is because he was bullied and essentially brainwashed into thinking that men shouldn't have feelings. Doesn't that seem the least bit problematic to anyone else? "Remembers boys: If you're not completely emotionless and macho every second of your life, you're not a real man! Simple as that!" The creators think they’re fighting against toxic gender stereotypes, but all they’re really doing is enforcing new toxic gender stereotypes!
    THIS SHOW IS AN INSULT!!!
