Pretty boss move to extend an offer like that to a couple of random hecklers like us! It's that attitude that gave me pause and made me think about how I was carrying myself.
I live waaay too far away to take advantage, unfortunately, and won't be in a place to travel that far until my degree is finished, etc. I do - as any petrolhead must - have a life goal to lap the Ring, though, so we may connect in the future.
In the meantime, if you've budgeted for a couple of laps and a few ancillary costs, can I propose a different use of this? If there is a children's hospital, Ronald McDonald House, or Make-A-Wish-type charity you can connect with, maybe you could give my ride to some boy or girl - or a father thereof - who doesn't have the luxury of planning as far ahead as I do. I'm sure there is somebody out there whose life would be made better by at least as much as mine would by spending a day at the Nordschleife.
If that's not feasible, I'll take a gigantic rain check!
Congratulations to you on your winning attitude and how you interact with viewers - of all types! All the best.

I always thought I had gotten a good attitude by not swearing at people and leaving internet arguments with writing (honest!) well wishes as my last comment, even if the argument was heated. But seeing what you did showed me how to behave even better on the internet if I am at fault for commenting something angry (everyone has a bad day, someday). That really is something to strive towards. Thank you very much, and thank you to Robert, too!

3:47 "There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self."
Ever since I read that quote, it has struck a chord with me. I've tried to lead my life by its example since. Admittedly a lot of times less successful than others, but it is still a great concept to keep in mind.
For that person to go back and write that as their comment it meant they realised something about themselves and even though their day may not have started well, it ended on a winning note. Good for them.

Well, probably I'm gonna write two comments. It's just because of these two that came really hard on you. The first one, as you said, it's very important. It means that he had second thoughts. It means that he doesn't want to spread hate. Instead, he wanted things to end peacefully. Besides, a lot of people probably don't know this. Having resources or not, the fact is, the person gets more knowledge. It's not like learning from a book or from the internet (now there's also a lot of information). Once back in 2002 I helped my uncle (he is a mechanic) putting back parts of a Ford Fiesta engine (the 2nd gen, I think). Of course, I didn't become any pro just because of that, but it was already great to me. To me what people fail to understand is how great it feels to really have close contact with an engine and/or any other part of an automobile. What you do is better and I'm here to learn, not to hate.
Now as for the second one....right. What to say? For some "10s of a second" I thought he was challenging you. That could be interesting if he would then say something like "I've been there for xx years and I did this and that...that curve, you're not doing well, it's really wrong...let's meet at the track and...". I gotta say you had a lot of patience by trying to find out why he was like that. Some may say "he's trying to help or he has good intentions..."...really? No. In the end, he just puts himself into shame. You and Misha have a lot of Km rolling at this track and the guy decides to tell you how to drive there???? And yet without being specific????????? That's an extreme disrespect. One of the things I really don't like in this world. Someone telling you what to do without any knowledge of that task you already did many times.
Driving more and talking less, that's what he mentioned before..yes, really smart. I guess in the city we also have to stop talking at once. If I'm riding and any passenger just says "well, we...", I just say "Shut up. I'm driving." Sounds really like a person that doesn't know how driving is at all. Only a person that doesn't understand how stable the driver becomes. I remember a video of a guy once with Misha getting instructions while driving his Murcielago. He was focused and yet he could talk. So it's ridiculous to mention this.
Sorry for the long text. I'll try not to write so much on the next comment. E30 M3.

Ah, haters. After over 10 years of driving HONDA automobiles they are as natural to me like lightning and thunder, the one can't be without the other. ;)
For a time they have been dragging me down, but lucky for me I also met a lot of interesting and cool people.
One person I actually never met, who runs a fab shop in Upland California, working on all kinds of cars but he started with a HONDA CRX.
And his take on it was:
    "Only success breeds enemies".
I learned that haters are often very sad people who just want to drag you down, so they are not alone in their shitty place.
Most haters only see what you have got, not the sweat, blood, tears and effort it takes to get there.
They remind me of a little kid, putting their foot down and raising their voice why they can't have another pudding.
So whenever I get hate nowadays (I'm joblevel 1 btw ;D), it actually makes me happy because it shows that I must be doing at least some things right in my life. ;)

But this time I was really encouraged and felt safe to leave a comment. I honestly hope that as the channel grows and there might be more of those trolls you will not be effected by those negative people. 100% on point Robert!
    I have 3 points
1, he has clearly never heard of the 4 stages of learning a new skill
#1, unconscious unknowing = you have no idea it even exists
#2 conscious unknowing = you now know of it but don't know how to do it/understand it.
#3 conscious knowing = you can now do it/understand it but you have to pay it great attention.
#4 unconscious knowing = you don't even have to think about it. You could do it in your sleep.
2, With that in mind, he has clearly never stuck to anything longer than step three in his life and can't grasp the concept of someone being able to do what you do.
3, I would also give the example of being a motorbike rider. Ask any motorbike rider of some experience and they can probably tell you where ever manhole, excessive lane markings, painted over lane markings, the dips and humps that cause oil to drop off leaking cars is all over there city. If not.further! And much like your example of reading where and how a driver you're approaching will behave. I've often spin non-car people out with the ability to call what is going to happen up ahead as well as what is coming up behind with certain cars because your brain is finely tuned to process all these things without having to dedicate any real brain power to them. It's even to a level were you can say, "watch this guy, he'll do a terrible lane change in 4-3-2-1-and sure enough, away they go.
I really applaud your attitude and approach when dealing with all that comes with stepping into the public eye.

I think people are very indoctrinated through society to really jump on people for not communicating things the way they are use to. Its something that depending on your upbringing and geographical location can be made much worse.
I see it like this, if we can get on the same page to communicate, your terminology really isn't important, or pronunciation even. People with different accents, regions, and ages all pronounce the same words slightly different. or even have a different set of terms for the same thing. This isn't something to jump down peoples throats and correct. As long as you know what they are talking about the goal of communication has been fufilled. Be respectful and give people some respect. Cause its really an extremely rude thing to do.

The comparison between driving TF and autobahn/highways is spot on. You know, or have a feeling, whether someone will deveate from their line, you know without thinking what to expect, and if you want to drive safe, you calculate their behavior into your own actions.

The phrase "a breath of fresh air" is not only often used but also 100% true. The only person who sits and talks to you, you complete stranger. A person who pays personal attention, as if you are in a bad mood and this is the person with whom you can have a calm and normal conversation.
People, this should be the internet, bringing us together and sharing knowledge, and not as it is now, watching fake people with fake feelings.

What I can understand and relate to the comment of taking seriously the track is that usually when you get too confident doing something, is when you start taking unnecessary risk without noticing it. An analogy to this...Usually experienced carpenters are the ones missing a finger.
Regardless of that, keep it safe and continue showing the love for the ring.

  • @Nordmore68
    @Nordmore68 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I completely understand how Robert feels about the Ring and being comfortable.
My "track" has been some 200 kms in three different directions from a town in northwest Norway.
I knew these roads, with every turn and bump from before I got my license, and could drive them with a flow that even amazed the driving school teacher before "licensed", as I had practiced a lot together with my mother.
I am now in my 50´s, still an incurable car- or motor-freak, living for 25 years in a different part of the country, and can still drive these stretches of road at good tempo at the same time as I speak with my children, if there on holiday.
It's like on auto pilot, but every "attention-sign" is still there.
One pick the line to stay well over on the right side at the point of meeting a car, one look for deers at the place one know they cross, one avoid the bumps to save the suspension at the same time as one make an effective line, etc, etc.
Btw, I wish you good luck with the Yaris, and hope Toyota finds some weakness somewhere, so that they decide to cover your expenses.

I known where drain covers are, dips undulations how the sun effects things where puddles form.
I have practised different lines through roundabouts...
I am aware that there can be cyclists and farm vehicals...
10000 hours gets you too a level... a lifetime elevates from there!!

Also, 6000 laps / 27 years is hilarious & slightly scary - when I watch the videos of the laps it never seems that long (never been but it is a life goal of mine one day) so to consider it’d take 27 years to do that same mileage I’d mind boggling to me !!

Well said Robert. I think you really hit the nail on the head when you started talking about different people and their different professions. If you have the equivalent of 27 years experience at one job or profession then you certainly should have the ability to "walk and chew gum" so to speak. While you were talking about your route to work an old saying I heard years ago came to mind. It goes something like this:" An amateur practices until he gets it right while a professional practices until he doesn't get it wrong." That's why after 6k laps you should be able to be, not blasé about driving the Nurburgring, but relaxed enough to talk while doing it.
