- Break Out Another Thousand! That's what boat ownership is like, unless you are my sister, apparently! I got roped into a "flywheel replacement" on her Mercruiser 185, but it turned into a complete disaster. It actually was a really fun time and we will get this thing rocking one way or another. I am a boat tech. Make sure you replace the gimbal bearing and the impeller when you put that thing back together! You will thank me later. Also, you will need to re align the engine to the outdrive. It takes a special tool. Its almost like a long clutch alignment tool. Good luck!

Cracked while under power = water crossed into the intake and hydro-locked a cylinder. Restart attempt w/ locked cylinder = sheared flywheel teeth.
Yeah, or it got hit enough that it didn’t want to spin and then the teeth got torn off. Either way it wasn’t just a “flywheel replacement”

Protecting yourself isn’t crazy or lame. Anyone who’s been doing this shit for a while knows the deal. I’ve had metal in my eyes way too many times to not wear safety glasses. One time even the magnet trick didn’t work, it was stuck so far in there I had to get it pulled out at a eye doctor. Not fun. Wear safety glasses and buy quality wire wheels people! Lol
As a master boat builder from Maine, and ASE certified master technician, I can honestly say that is the worlds worst boat ever made. Often referred as a Clorox Bottle.

Speed on the water hits different. I went from a 19ft open bow to a twin engine 29ft go-fast. Now I'll never not own a boat. They're alot of money and work but it's no different than owning a race car. You're gonna break shit and everything is expensive lol. Love the vids Tony!

I know it's weird but I'm interested to see more of the boat repair project. I think partly because it is just similar enough to working on cars but things are different enough that I haven't seen this before. Years ago I tried to help a friend fix his boat. It seemed to have an intermittent fuel starvation issue but everything I did to try to "test" the fuel pump always tested good. I never figured it out and I was reluctant to just throw parts at the problem when it was someone else's money.

Those engines are darn near bullet proof, and super easy on fuel.
I had a few of them, went back to 2 stroke outboards. Less maintenance.
Remember to winterize the engine if it will see freezing temps.

Great video! Just a heads up, when you put the outdrive back on, make sure the shifter is forward gear, and the drive is in forward gear. That way the saddle on the shift shaft on the boat will slide onto the shift rod on the drive without damage.

I used to work on a couple Clark forklifts that had that same engine... coincidentally both also had a knack for stripping flywheel teeth off.

Yes that's a 3.0 gm. I work on those in industrial lifts.make sure get the correct bolts for starter. Or it will walk around. Also industrial lifts have a bracket on end of starter bolted to block.
The Merc 3.0 ltr has a 4.00 bore and 3.60 stroke, kinda like a 1/2 of a 350 chevy. But, the rods are nutty long at 6.500". The boat being a 2005, which was a transition year for 3.0's, yours has the 620 head which is important for engine replacement. The good news is a newly rebuilt 3.0 in that Bayliner almost doubles its value!! Go all in and rebuild the outdrive too!

After you do all the other things suggested(ie gimbal bearing, etc), when you go to put the outdrive back on, lower the tongue of the trailer(will raise the back of the boat) so the outdrive isn't hitting the ground. You will struggle enough without fighting it hitting the ground. Good luck

Where that water cooled exhaust elbow bolts to the water cooled exhaust manifold, it will rust out the dividers and let water into the exhaust ports when you shut it off, then past the valves and past the rings. Just fixed the same issue on the same model boat 3 months ago.

It depends on the boat. I have a custom 18' aluminum river race tunnel. low freeboards and no engine cover with jet make it easy and simple to work on. It's like an aluminum drag boat.

Hey guy congrats on TH-cam I've been around the water my whole life worked on boats do one thing change that exhaust Elbow .
Usually they get hairline cracks in them and they can leak when you're not running the engine it's really called the exhaust riser.

Always good to have a small "kicker" motor when you are out in a large body of water. Anything happens to the main motor the small one will get you back safe to the dock...

Had the same problem on a 2007 Bayliner 185, water in the oil and a bent valve, the water cooled exhaust/intake manifold was rotten and cracked etc. ended up slapping a new one on along with a new head and she was good to go. Hardest part of the job was working on my knees with the boat still in the water it absolutely sucked!

Once you get the engine back running, make sure your sister buys a flush muff for the lower unit. Since she runs in salt water you need to get that salt water out of the engine after you run it. They are really cheap and hook to a garden hose. As one other person mentioned.. You need to winterize them in areas with below freezing temps.

The Chesapeake is brackish water, it's half fresh and half salt.
They usually put backdraft dampers on the exhaust. If it broke it allows water to come backwards into to engine .causes hydrolock
Hence your starter teeth gone
On my boat, apparently one of the reversion valves was put in backwards from the factory, allowing hydro locked engine... I discovered that when converting from prop exhaust to transom exhaust...

They call that motor an Iron Duke but it’s based on the old Chevy truck 6 cylinder. The automotive iron duke is smaller and a cross flow head.
I just took the cylinder head off my brothers and the machine shop said it uses mostly SBC valves. I had them replaced with stainless
congrats on the 100K level!!!! love the content, keep at it. on that boat, holy crap that boat needs some type of marinized 305 Chevy and it wil run forever if winterized properly. no combo manifolds which is a nasty thing to deal with. small outdrive so may not take the torque of a healthy 350 Chevy. that engine is the 4 cyl version of the old Chsvy 230/250/292 inline 6. marinized of course.

Has anyone told you to check the exhaust riser gasket yet ? I was a Mercury Marine "Master Technician" around when you were born , maybe before , look at where the riser bolts to the manifold & you'll see where the smallest leak sends water down to exhaust & intake ports , sorry but they were junk back then & obviously still today , thanks for reminding me of why I couldn't wait to get away from doing this crap for a living ! I'll probably have nightmares tonight ! Oooh , ooohh THAT SMELL !!

I use to have a bbc jet boat that I had for 12yrs and never had any big problems with it and I loved that thing, hated to get rid of it but my health took a turn for the worse and I just wasnt able to get much use out of it anymore

I had one experience working on a boat. My uncle asked me to paint his. It turned out great but never again. I helped him disassemble the boat and let me tell you that boat paint is another kind of nasty hazard. He got the 4.3 vortec rebuilt and just hit the water last month. Good times.
I just learned on youtube that you can change a boat trailer tire by trimming all the way down. Cool. 😀
Hey Tony, im a machinest up north. If your sister left water in it over the winter, you more than likely have a cracked block. We see it all the time on the valve train side. Going to have to pressure test it, but its common.

This reminds me of when I had to “help” remove and disassemble a mercuiser 5.7 that also had water in the oil and cylinders. One of the piston’s ended up have the rings rotted into the bore and I had to beat the all the pistons out with a sledge hammer. The block was already 40 over from at least one rebuild due to the same problems and there was no material left in the worst cylinder. Safe to say if anyone knows you know how to work on cars and asks to have you work on there boat, say no unless you really care for them because it’s not gonna go well.
Tony,the exhaust riser propably failed and filled a cylinder with raw water.when your sister tried to crank it it took the teeth off the flywheel.water in cylinder got passed the rings and got in the oil before it took the teeth off the ring gear.

Tony, I’ve been a marine mechanic for 35 years. I know that smell I live up in New England I wish I was closer I’d come down and help.
So that thingy on the back is called a Stern Drive. In this case, it is a Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 2 stern drive. When you push the button you trim the drive and Mercury call this Power Trim.
I had a boat very similar to that one! Exact same scenario with water in the oil except I did t have the water damage to the whole engine like your sisters! I was told those engine are notorious for head gaskets going bad because the bore is so much bigger than the 2.5 iron duke ..
