It is always a pleasure to observe German precision and perfectionism, regardless of the field in which it is applied. Thank you for the opportunity to watch the dedicated efforts.

    Good test so far.
It looked like the MSR has a design flaw. It angles the piston when you pull the lever all the way. Either redesign the piston including 2 O rings and or restrict the lever action for less angle.
Can you perhaps test the Katadyn Pocket aswell?
    Thx for your service.

Perfect observation and analysis. I found that to be the case on my first one as well.... Katadyn Pocket for sure, if we get some clicks on those videos and I get some money to afford the filter, or someone lends me his filter.

I'm sure you'll get good results either way, but as unintuitive as it is, 70% isopropanol is better at killing bacteria than 99%. The inclusion of a little bit of water allows it to diffuse more easily through the bacterial cell membranes.

I noticed in this (and your third video): the Grayl lids or caps must be loosened to allow the air to vent out, otherwise, it takes an incredibly long time to press down on the unit. The first time I tried this - I did not loosen the cap - and I could not push it all the way down, and I almost blew out the sidewall. When I reread the instructions, I understood what I had to do - simply loosen the vent cap or the mouthpiece to let the air squeeze out and pushing down, and it worked very well and quickly😂

This lesson was learned before 1st press on Cam for Video 1 ;) So I can assure cap was loose in all cases. At Minute 4:00 you can hear me unscrew it and at 17:55ish I even comment "and I´m opening that thing...." meaning the cap.

The only thing I learned from this was to have backup solution. Grayl and especially MSR were disappointing. I hope my MSR Guardian doesn’t have this problem. Did you slightly unscrew the lid on the Grayl before compressing it?

Yeah, I was really disappointed by the MSR and the reaction of their customer-service. Regarding Guardian: Check MSRs Website and look for the reviews of the Guardian, especially the 1 Star Reviews. There´s a common claim there, regarding leaking pump which sounds exactly what I was seeing on the later model of MiniWorks Ex. One might conclude, that there´s a quality control issue going on. Regarding Grayl: Yes, Lid was slightly unscrewed, I think I have commented that. I´m not sure what to make of this, as this might be normal (reading other reviews)... Let´s see what the bacteria growth results show at the end.....

@@dl2man I just bought a Katadyn Pocket on sale. It seems the most reliable but the 0.2 micron specification is slightly disappointing. Also it can freeze which is not a problem for the MSR Guardian. All in all, very hard to find a good solution without drawbacks. I guess this is why Scandinavian survival instructors recommend getting water from a source higher up than agricultural fields and factories, avoid ”bird lakes” and stagnant water, and boil it or use Aquacare drops or Micropur. Filters break, become mouldy and are disappointing in general.

@@ggrmc764 A friend of mine got triggered by my testing and pulled out his never used before kathadyn pocket to try it out. He discovered, it would leak dirt water as well from the main O-Ring. The lesson learned for me is: Test your stuff before trying to use it in the field, and always have backup ! 73 Manuel; DL2MAN
