  • Just for giggles, I decided run a 36th level Fighter (Avenger) through the Caves of Chaos. Let's see what happens.
Caves of Chaos map from Jon Pintar's Realistic Map collection. Link not currently available from DMs Guild, but here's a list of his work: www.dmsguild.c...

You have to be more specific than that! (Fleetwood is not a nice man!)

Since you ask: Move-then-attack does feel clunky once you've tried other options. But it's the same for everyone, and it avoids the dreaded goblin conga line of 5e. At any rate, it's an easy houserule.

This is fascinating to watch as he works through the caves. I always felt dnd combat was a little unrealistic: i assumed that kobolds would just try to swarm, climb, knock over, and suffocate their foes, rather than attacking with pointy things.

@@myownlittlworld9427 Totally unrealistic, obviously. There are wrestling rules in BECMI but they’re clunky.

Are there swarm rules in BECMI, or are those only in later editions? When the weight classes are divergent enough you could almost treat them like a swarm of tiny creatures against a large opponent, where their most dangerous move is the dogpile.
But maybe that’s just a long way of saying that all rules break down at the extremes.

The hobgoblins will tell a heroic tale to their kin of the last stand of the Caves of Chaos, where their superior tactics confounded the mighty Fleetwood. At least they would if there were any left alive....... Looking forward to more Fleetwood vs the Caves of Chaos, lets get some nat 20's for the monsters!

Around 52:40, you didn't check the sightlines. Probably that last 20 would not have seen Fleetwood.

Just curious about the actual tech details here -- looks like Foundry, yes? How did you get the Caves map? and then how did you do the selective lighting? Just bought Foundry. And great series, mate!

@@BobIrving2 Hi. Thanks for the kind feedback. Yes it’s Foundry. The map is from Jon Pintar’s Realistic Maps collection, although I don’t see it for sale anywhere at the moment.
What do you mean about secret lighting? It might just be a setting in Foundry.

20:15. Does 19 hit if it is short range for the crossbow? So +1?

@@robertbyerlay5040 No. his AC is -8 and a their THAC0 is 19. So, 19+1 would hit -1. A natural 20 hits anything though.

What are the chances that the denizens of the cave have a defensive alliance that result in them banding together and turn out together against any threat?

@@becmiberserker Fleetwood has reasonably spent at least a decade or two getting to level 36 and getting ready for this fight. Have any orcs spent the last ten years or so pumping iron in preparation for the inevitable Order incursion from the Keep?

Just wish you gave them better tactics. No reason for not having a guy run down to room 25 and get them or have the guys from 24 move up behind Fleetwood to attack him and slow him down. I mean, Hobgoblins are not dumb.

Only reason that Fleetwood took as much damage as he did is because he was too lazy to run. :P Also some suboptimal targeting choices, but it is as it is. Not going to shed a tear for this guy if he ends up dead, since he is not a nice guy.
