We know it can be challenging for some dog owners to cut their dogs nails them self as some dogs hate getting their nails cut, therefore we hope this video is helpful in giving you a groomers opinion on the easiest option for you! We also show you how to use use dog nail clippers and how to use a dog nail grinder on our dog Mabel so that you can see how the process would look when doing it at home with your own dog.

    We would love to hear if you prefer using nail clippers or a nail grinder when trimming your dogs nails?

      My dog and I both prefer the grinder because if you clip them, it will usually have a "ruff" texture where you cut and she hates the sound of the clipper when it cuts so we stick with the Dremel. our local grooming place uses a Dremel. I think this should have been included in the cons of clippers

      @@eevee5699 Hello! Thank you for commenting. Yes, the edges of the nails tend to be rough after clipping but if the nail clipper is sharp enough then the bottom of the nail should not be rough just the edges. I can totally see how you can view this as a con! If your dog is okay and stays still for the dremel that is awesome!

    I've used a nail clipper for my dogs most of my life but I took in a rescue dog that would not let anybody rough his feet. He had badly overgrown jet black nails. He wouldn't let me get anywhere near his feet with clippers. But I was able to use a grinder on him. I wont say he likes it but he sits and tolerates it. I started with clippers on the other dog I have but switched to a grinder with her too. Even though it makes noise and takes longer they both tolerate it better. I will use whatever the individual dog is most comfortable with. Another thing about grinders is that they produce a lot of fine nail dust so I always wear a mask when I use them.

      Hi there thanks so much for watching and commenting. You are so right each dog is so different. If one method doesn’t work try the other. Wearing a mask is a great suggestion too because if there is a lot of nail to grind there is a ton of nail dust. 😊

    I definitely prefer a grinder for mine. I have a steel grit rechargeable one, and while it takes a bit longer, it gets the nails down quick not to mention its pretty quiet too. It takes a bit of finessing when it comes to my dogs hairy toe, but I feel like I have more control over when I stop as to not hit their quick and no jagged edges or crushed nails and no anxiety about hurting thme and making them bleed.

    • @FurryFriendsZone

      Hi thanks for watching yes the grinder is great if you have the patience as well as the dog. It does take time but the finished product is great and no cutting the quick. ❤️🐶❤️

      Hi thanks for watching and commenting. I agree if your dog doesn’t mind it it’s much faster. Maybe a little file after to soften the ends so there is less scratching is always good to do too.😊

  • @SawBladeXDX
    @SawBladeXDX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I used clippers on my dogs, along with a nail file to dull the edges. But was thinking of trying a nail grinder in the future. Also with the nail grinder I've been told hand held isn't as powerful as corded. So they recommended hand held for dogs. I like the videos from a groomer side of things though. keep it up

    • @FurryFriendsZone
      @FurryFriendsZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for commenting!! Doing the combo of nail clippers and nail grinder is a great option and makes the process faster for you and your dog! I can imagine that the corded grinder would be more powerful. If you ever have any questions about grooming please let us know!

    I use Milwaukee Rotary tool with grinding stone on my Goldens, my 5 year old took to it really quick I also use a Oral-B tooth brush since he didn't mind the noise from tool. My girl Golden never seems to get used to grinding nails, she is always skittish about any sudden noise. Thou she is getting better each time.

    • @FurryFriendsZone
      @FurryFriendsZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chris! Thanks so much for commenting! That is great that one of your dogs is fine with the nail grinder and electric tooth brush. It definitely does depend on the dog. For your other Golden that doesn't like the nail grinder as much you could try clipping all the nails with the nail clipper and then smoothing the edges with the nail grinder which would make it much quicker if your dog will allow you to do it for a short amount of time:)

    Thanks for giveing me this link i like the idea of clipping then grinding to smooth it out i have 3 lil dogs and i thought grinding would be faster or at least not that much longer than clipping so ill probably do both thank you again

    Thanks for the tips, it helped me make a decision to stick with clippers. I may get a grinder down the road just to smooth my doggos nails after clipping ☺️

      Hi there thanks so much for watching and commenting we appreciate your feedback. That’s what I do mainly. Trim first and smooth rough edges with the grinder. If your dog can take the clipper it just gets more nail off faster. The grinder saves your floors and scratches from freshly cut nails. 😊

      Hi there thanks fir watching and your feedback. Yes I agree the Dremel is not fast enough for some dogs. They won’t stay still for that long. That’s why I normally use clippers and then Dremel to smooth everything out. Good luck!❤️🐶❤️

      @@FurryFriendsZone Well today my whippet 14 weeks Cary Grant got his first nail clipping. Used clippers gave him a 12 inch bully stick to calm him HA. Cut 1 in front then 1 in back to let his front paws free to atend the bully. Within a little while .! minute he didn't care what I was doing . So we got ll of then done. and bleeding! Yeepie hope go's well next time.

    If you use a larger diameter Dremel sanding drum you will have more control. Also, use the course grit at a relatively high speed. I have years of experience on multiple pets and I don't even own clippers anymore.

    . I had a dog who hated both the clipper and the Dremel so the groomer always had to do his nails. The dog I have now HATES the clipper, but doesn’t seem to mind the nail grinder, not a Dremel pet grinder, but a different brand of pet nail grinder. This grinder is much quieter than a Dremel and my dog doesn’t seem to mind it as much as a clipper. As with the Dremel it’s best to trim the feet so hair won’t get caught and that’s clearly stated in the accompanying paperwork. Frankly I would prefer using a clipper because the process goes more quickly, but I really think it’s a matter of what your dog tolerates best.

    • @FurryFriendsZone
      @FurryFriendsZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for commenting! Yes I totally agree that pet owners need to do what works best for their dog as some dogs prefer (or I should say tolerates lol) one over the other. I am glad you found what works well for your doggie:) The nail clipper is definitely much quicker but it sounds like the dremel you have is a good one!

    Your hair cut is cute. I used Clippers on my bigger dogs. I just got a tiny 13 pounder and a few of his nails grow very close to the pad. Using the Clippers can pinch the pad on him easily. So, grinder it is. And oh my, that demo didn't look very good. 👍

      Thanks for watching and commenting:) Definitely the size of the dog will be a factor in what will work better for them! We are glad to hear that the grinder is easier to use on your little guy.

    My question is what grit are they using with the grinder ( nail Dremel ) ?

    • @FurryFriendsZone
      @FurryFriendsZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there thanks for watching. I would probably use a medium grit but the finished product you want to be smooth. So sometimes starting with a harder grit and then ending in something not as hard to finish. It also depends how much nail you have to get off. Hope this helps 😊🐶

      @@FurryFriendsZone I have a small 13# dog. I have a Dremel and both 60 and 120 grit 1/4” sanding bands. Should I start with the less aggressive 120 grit until I get proficient with a Dremel?

      That is great! Doing it at home definitely saves a lot of money and is good because you are able to do it more often instead of just at grooming appointments! Also, that way your dog also gets comfortable with it :)

    I'm petrified of useing the clippers I accidentally cut the quick justonce whilst being so carful not to that it made me faint ,
    I since perspire when trying to clip the nails my dogs can feel it and pull their feet away which makes me jump ,
    I haven't got a drmmel so I began useing a high grade sand paper and whimsical chews that does the trick takes very long but I seem to shape them real nice ,
    My dogs claws groes so fast they need regular timing at least once a week ,
    No time for myself sadly

      Hi there thanks for watching and commenting. Good for you for attempting it. Trust even groomers can bleed the quick. Some dogs are just difficult and there isn’t much you can do. Maybe taking your pup to the groomer for nails will be less stressful on both of you!❤️🐶❤️

    What brand are the yellow ones? I tried the drill on my dogs nails and it went horribly haha.

    • @FurryFriendsZone
      @FurryFriendsZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi!! The yellow nail clippers are by the brand JW Pet. If you search JW Pet Dog Nail Clippers in google you will find them. They are also available on Amazon! The dremel can be more difficult and many dogs don’t like the loud sound so I would definitely suggest using clippers than. If you have any other questions please let us know:)

    The clippers seem to be the best option to me. I am not patient enough to use the nail grinder. I agree with trimming then maybe using the grinder to maybe smooth them. But clipping gets it done and we can move on and set the dog free.

    • @FurryFriendsZone
      @FurryFriendsZone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there thanks for watching. I agree clipping first and then grinding is much faster. If the nails are long I get more impatient than some of the dogs. It can take forever. Haha❤️🐶❤️

    I’m not a fan of clippers cause they leave sharp nails that rip and tear everything including my skin and they crush the nail as it cuts.
    They make good grinders that are fast and silent

    The grinder should be done outside. It throws a lot of nail dust into the air to breathe and all over the place.

    • @FurryFriendsZone
