  • Where is best to eat in hanoi? What kind of food do the locals eat? What else is there besides Pho and Banh Mi?
We set ourselves a challenge of finding all this out... but with the help of the locals.
Having been in hanoi once before, and doing what every other traveller does and eating copious amounts of pho and banh mi, we wanted to try something else. But not only that, we wanted to eat at places that might not be on trip advisor or other review sites. We wanted to eat just like a local. So armed with Google translate, we set out.
    The rules:
    1. When we want to eat, we have to ask someone to recommend a resturant.
    2. Once a resturant has been pinpointed, we have to eat there.
    3. If a certain dish is recommended then we have to eat that.
    4. Absolutely no banh mi and no traditional pho!!!
One problem we did face, was the language barrier. We don't speak vietnamese and a lot of vietnamese don't speak english. A few times when asked, the local would just point in a direction, instead of giving us a resturant. Therefore we would head in the direction given but ask someone else until we got an exact location.
It was really an enjoyable and surprising experience and it got us to try food we have never had and mostly enjoyed! And it also showed us that just because something may not look the best, doesn't mean it isn't good! Watch along to see what we did and didn't enjoy. From a bowl of slop to a plate of jelly rice, we dove deep into vietnamese cuisine.

That was great to watch. Why did they lock you in the coffee shop? Are they not allowed to be open when the train comes through. Some of those dishes looked great. Did that nut cake smack you in the face? 😂

So we're not 100% sure but I don't think they're allowed to operate as coffee shops anymore due to safety, so when they see a police man doing the rounds they shut the Shutters and therefore lock everyone in the shop for 15 mins until the police man has gone 🤣
