My favorite affordable protein option is buying chicken leg quarters in larger amounts. They have 10 lb bags for $6 in lots of stores (at least in Texas), which gets you like 16 quarters. At like 40 cents for about 60 grams of protein, it's the best deal I've found!
Hear me out! If you have an Asian grocery store in your area, get the Ligo brand sardines in tomato sauce (available regular or spicy). Sauté some onions and garlic, add sardines and mash them up but leave some chunks. Add a little bit of soy sauce to taste. Serve this over rice. Sometimes I’ll put a fried egg on top. This dish is what got me to love sardines.
Smoked canned herring is totally slept on. They sell it at the dollar tree. No weird fishy taste, just smoked and savory. It’s not listed as smoked, but the smoked flavor is listed in the ingredients.
For dried beans, instant pots have gotten really reasonably priced (and are showing up with high frequency at used good stores like Goodwill) and they make it so easy to cook dried beans! I never bother soaking them anymore except for kidney beans.
Thank you so much for your videos ♥️ recovering from a teenage Ed many years later, highest weight was 23 stone and lowest was 9 stone, now at 15 and working my way down in a healthy way. Your attitude to food and the nasty influencers makes me feel so much better and you have some great options for meals and snacks ❤️ love from the UK xx
Glad you’re feeling better! I’ve been there too. Up to 165 pounds from about 100 pounds (I’m also very short and now in my late 30’s) and just feeling better. I think that’s about 12 stones?
You can also try soy chunks or TVP. Soy chunks should be readily available at any indian grocery store and are 50% protein by weight. They're a little chewy, and need water to rehydrate them, but you can add them to curries, stews, soups, pastas. I even sometimes just soak some in hot water and add them to my salads.
I was not a fan of the texture of soy chunks but I am a huge fan of TVP for chili or shepherds pie or anything you'd use ground meat in that has a sauce or gravy. The secret for me is to rehydrate it in boiling stock or water with some bouillon so it has some flavor to go with the texture, it's painfully bland by itself.
Thank you for your videos and your positive energy. As someone who's been overweight my whole life and struggles with a healthy relationship with food you really help me and help me find balance. You come at it from a non judgemental place and the world is better for it.
Dried beans are amazing but hard to cook so here is the fastest, easiest way… instant pot. No prep, no soak. Just pop it on 30min bean for small beans and 45min bean setting for pintos and larger. You can make a ton at once so freezing beans in a recycled deli container works extremely well but freezing into portion sized cubes and vacuum sealing is even better.
Your daughter is so cute! I sneak frozen peas into my food a lot. I hate the texture and too many will make me gag but it’s such an easy way to sneak in fiber and protein.
Very useful video! Wish I could buy those Peri Peri Tuna packs up here in Canada. They’re so good. As an aside: The Limeys have gotten to me and I now find myself enjoying mushy peas or Bigga peas with Fish and Chips
I bought hard boiled eggs in Costco I’m so happy I did! Also I love unshelled edamame , literally eat some with a miso cabbage soup I made today. Been craving it!
The ten pound bags of chicken hindquarters are the best meat deal!!! Even if I complain every time I buy because I remember buying the whole ten pound bag for $2.90
Such a helpful video! I think the store brand non-fat Greek yogurt tastes the best! Just made myself some dip with it in the fridge for when I need a snack with extra protein (I just add the ranch packet).
This is SO good, but im in the Netherlands and we dont have a lot of these things or in these versions. So id really like to know which protein are good and cheap from dutch stores..
I’m with you on sardines, but I did some googling and discovered that you can use sardines to replace anchovies to add umami to some dishes. I haven’t tried it yet. 🤞🏼
Great information! I have (get) to eat a a ton of protein for health reasons. My current favorite powder is Orgain Vegan Vanilla. No im definitely not vegan it just tastes great with (fruit) and in a smoothie. 21 grams. Which is a good way to start the day. Mix it in with pancakes instead of flour, light whipping cream and some berries on top. Or light maple syrup. Kroger for the win!
I always laugh when people say sunflower seeds are a good alternative if you have allergies. I have a sunflower allergy, so I always go with peanut butter!
LOVE that you represent generic brands #GreatValue #Krogers. Shocked that you didn't show off any discounted goods! Kroger freezer section ALWAYS has discounted meat, especially if you go in the morning. Saves me tons of money
Sir. I'll fight you. I ADORE canned peas. I love that the canning process eliminates all the "green" flavor that I hate in vegetables, and just makes them so mellow and sweet. (That said, everyone is free to like what they want! Just LET THE REST OF US LIKE WHAT WE LIKE)
Did I miss tofu? I’m in the WL communities on TikTok & the answer to everything is proteeen. Need to lose weight? Protein. Need to gain weight? Protein. Someone did a maintenance video & when I asked if they were decreasing protein since the previous vid said to lose weight is to increase protein…I was met w/ 🦗
Is that still affordable where you are? Here the meat that used to be $1.99/lb is now $3.99/lb on sale, $4.99 not on sale. Makes ground beef more luxury than go-to
Cheapest by weight is buying a whole cow. Usually costs about 2,000 but you can get about 4-500lbs of meat & that includes all your incredible steaks and ribs & everything. It's well worth it if you can save up for one & have a deep freezer OR go in on with with a few friends.
nah bro those chicken packets are awful, i just went to the store 2 days ago to get the tuna ones and saw those chicken and the beef ones and chicken texture is just horrible, the beef are ok though, but still i would just avoid them and get tuna.
@@theplantslant2431 meh I prefer tofu and seitan over tvp. Textured pea protein is better but more pricey. Homemade Seitan has to be the ultimate cheapest
A video like this about fiber and some of your favorite recipes would be great!!!

5:40 try the outer ring in the microwave on a piece of paper towel for 8-12 seconds instead of the center. Sooo goey and glorious.

I'm with Oakly, I love peas. I have some frozen tortellini that is great with added peas. Also love it with a creamy risotto.

My mother LOVES canned peas, and I think she’s crazy. 😹 I do love frozen and fresh peas, though.
Awesome vid. For me however I hate all peas but canned peas. To each their own.

You can make your own oat flour by blending oats! I bought a 6 pound bag of oats from Costco lol😂
Tried the dry roasted edamame on your suggestion. They should sponsor you. It's such a good snack
Try the Nuri spiced sardines! The flavor of the oil is super delicious imo
Have you tried sardines on buttery toast with tomato sauce?
I grew up on canned peas and actually preferred canned over frozen or fresh for the longest time. Still kinda do
I add greek yogurt when I'm making scrambled eggs.

I saw a video that you used cinnamon protein powder. What brand of cinnamon protein powder do you use?
I wish i liked can fish and chicken......so cheap and high protiein
Ohhhhhhh I’m trying the the lentils with marinara
How do you feel about chobani? You never seem to mention it and it has more protein doesn't it
This might be a silly question. Can you have too much protein?
I always laugh when people say sunflower seeds are a good alternative if you have allergies. I have a sunflower allergy, so I always go with peanut butter!
May i suggest Mung Beans. The Calorie:protein:fiber ratio is really good.
Have you tried the spicy gochujang tuna ? An alltime fav of mine. Some steamed veggies, rice, furikake, and the tuna ? UGH 😮💨
Can kids have protien powders in like milk?
