Note: 55 liters of storage for the 2014 Burgman 400 was great.
    Today's 2017 - 2018 Burgman 400 has 42 liters & the Burgman 650 has 50 liters.

I have the Burgman 650 Executive which I enjoy riding. It is a good bike for the open road, highways and back roads. It is just as at home in the city flitting in and out of the traffic and getting the shopping. It seems like the 400 is a good junior partner to the 650. The 650 is well kitted out and from your review the 400 seems to have a good level of equipment which would make it a good touring scooter as well. This is what these maxi scooters are for. Thanks for sharing your review.

My new bike. I have a Honda VTX1300 I am afraid to ride now because of my arthritis in my fingers. So I traded it in for this. This bike is so fun to ride!

Thanks for what you said. Exactly the reason I’m looking for a Motorscooter because the arthritis in my left hand is so bad, it hurts to use the clutch. I have a Kowasaki 454. But can you recommend a comparable scooter? Thanks again.

Same problem with me. I went from a Kawasaki motorcycle to a Suzuki Burgman 400 - 2024. Love it.!!

Just b4 July 4th, a 400 was delivered to me in Monterey, CA.. An '09 with only 12k+ miles, but a Dead battery, soon rectified with a way over-priced O'Reilly battery @ $105- out the door, inc a fab $1.70 Sr Discount. Also, I had brought up a new Metzeler rear tire, but couldnt find a coop shop to install this Holiday week. Seaside - Monterey was crazy on the 4th, didnt care to chance the crazies on the nu 2 me scoot. Morn of 5th, after battery install, I headed No. to Moss Landing for a fine lunch at Phils Restaurant. Soon to be 71, the 400 was an armful to me, relative to my Kymco 150cc scoots 400mi So in The O.C., BackBay Newport Beach. Decided to head home early Friday, but so lil time on 400 to be comfortable! Headed East on the Monterey-Salinas Hwy about 5mi, then, cut up & over Laureles Grade .. to Carmel Valley Rd.. I knew these 50mi of twisties would better prep me for faster Hwy #101.. Yep, 70min later we had bonded more closely, but nothing could prep for rising temps of 80...85... 90... 103 in Paso Robles. Even so, the 400 was capable, comfortable .. wanting to run up about 7500rpm, over 70-75mph, not breathing too hard, amazingly, even passing power! Lunch on Avila Beach Pier was 103, the Friday beach appearing like our SoCal Laguna, on a Summer Sunday. Jeez... Back on #101, bumper to bumper, and 110 Degrees in Shell Beach... Gads! Over my 50yrs of trips thru our Central Coast had I experienced likes!. Temp on the water-cooled Burgie 400 never varied beyond mid-range, even in 100++. I hit Paso Robles, where voracious winds commenced.... Nor had I experienced such crazy winds, excepting some distant desert trips. The winds increased past Lompac, horrendous slapping winds, all around, No consistancy. Happy to exit on Ol' Hwy 1, I headed 4mi back North, checking into a Yoganada retreat center for 2 nites, before my intended dawn Sunday assault on L.A., thru to home. Frankly, the Gremlins had been at me all week, friends exclaiming this insaneness of the old man buying a 400cc scoot for CA Fwys, " you shouldnt be doin this, you're goin have an accident .. we're gonna miss you.." ... on & on. Lil prep and lousy tires added concerns!. All, in all, I had done 240+ mi that Friday.... Amazingly surprised at the competence, capabilities of this "White Knight", the white '09. Risks were high, temps extreme, but we had done it, about 2/3 the way home. The 3.7gal fuel tank provides decent range, but cruising at 70mph+ does burn a tank quickly. BTW, dash registered about 50mpg at speed, not bad and this ol' guy was not fighting the Burgie seat, not bad either.
My Saturday rest-day, not really that. No restaurants around Fri eve, I had gobbled copious amounts of ice cream & fruit bars from the retreat center fridge. Hungry in the morn, I planned to head back north for a World-class burger at Jamala Beach. Ten AM, I exited the large electro gate, then, a right on Hwy #1... GADS!! .. Barely turning at 5mph, a near Headon with a Huuuge Turkey Vulture, swooping down for a redkill. He put "the brakes on"! .. Even with helmet on, I heard the wind hit his 8' span, felt it on my neck. We veered away from one another instantly, me freakin him out as much as this Shock to me... I never dropped the 400, waiting later in the day, downtown Lompoc to accomolish that. The bald rear tire had spun on shiny asphalt, zig-zaggin a tad @ 3mph, however lil damage, at only one point, the lowest under foot rests... NO mirrors, handle-bar ends, nuttin. VERY thankful a big semi had hit the redlight at my left, folks driving up, gazing at this ol boy attempting to right my 400lb+ bike... Made it, further checked out bike a block away.. Shaken, this Burgie was in better shape than me, but, thankful I had only incurred a lil sore spot below an already hurting knee miniscus..
My Lady had called Friday night, remarking, " They're Killin Cycle Guys, shootin em on L.A. Fwys"! .. Now, Sat nite, she called to relate, "Hun, you might not be able to use the 101 tomo .. Fires from Goleta to Santa Barbara.." I swear, it had already been 6 days of gremlins, would it ever end?!
NO! After a fitfull night, I arose b4 dawn, packing the Burgie. Gazing into storage ... SCREECH.. SHREEK!! A White owl had come straight down.. At Me! Veering off to fly 2 more circles around me, SCREETCH... Back into darkness . Two bird "incidents" ... two days ... Not a good sign!! ..
Less than 3hrs later, another 160mi, I was home, almost kissing my front door. Nine AM, I poured an ample glass of Cal Cabernet, headed out to my HOA spa for a long-ass dip. What a week!
OBSERVATIONS: Perhaps buyin a bike outta Reno was a good thing, long, cold winters & furnace summer days can be cause for lo-mileage offerings. Tho had decided on a used Honda Cxt700, the "White Knight" deal was too good to pass - $2100- inc cover, wheel lock, trickle chgr, even flashing LED Hub lights. And delivery, by truck, 300mi to Monterey area was a clincher. Upon my return, 2 Metzelers installed within days, a dealer 28pt check affirming good conditiin overall, was music to my ears. Not quite a month, I still find nice surprises about this Burgie 400. The dual caliper front brakes are awesome, the right handlebar brake control features a "linked" brake system.. both brakes perfectly, with remaing left grip still inducing rear brake. Added saddlebags & pending topbox, cause for great storage.
Downfall of this trip? Yep, wouldnt ya know it!.. Big Sur Hwy #1 opened just days later...
Cause for a planned bike/camp trip soon!

I picked up a very low mileage 2015 400. Older now and got rid of my heavier cruiser.
I like the lower weight and low center of gravity.
    The storage is nice too.

I've had several 400cc scooters to include the 07 & 09 Burgman 400 and an 07 Yamaha majesty. What I've noticed across the board with all three of them is that although they will get to 70 and sometimes a little over. It's not something you'd want to do for an extended period. I have had the 07 burgman to 78 while passing but it wasn't stable at that speed and wasn't much if any throttle left. The 09 and the majesty aren't any better as far as top end, they all seem to like to hover around the 60MPH range, as for touring I wouldn't say that you could run from say NC to MD at 70 before having problems. The scoots are great around town, but as far as what I've experienced although they do have highway capability I would say that you wouldn't want to go on a major interstate with a 70MPH speed limit for very long

1969jmac although the rpms are a little high at 70plus you can and I have run my 99 model burgman at 70 plus on the motorway for long distances with no problems and it will do an indicated 92 mph on the flat with a bit more on a good day.that is with a tall screen and top box plus mine is an early carb model burg not sold in the us, same horsepower as later models though.

I'm surprised at these comments. I would suggest that you have your bike checked out, but you had three different 400's. My Helix will do 70 comfortably, and I've had three. I only have my one Burgman 400, and I can cruise at 80, and had it up to 90, but I enjoy going the speed limit, so I use the higher speeds to pass or get away from a situation. I would look elsewhere for the source of the limitations and problems experienced by 1969jmac. Operator limitations or expectations? Or perhaps jmac is a big mac, in which case the Burgman 650 would address all the 400's limitations? I'm just a little mac so no offense given. I just happen to think my Burgman 400 is one of the most brilliantly designed motorcycles I have ever ridden, (along with the other Maxiscooters). I spent most of the day riding twisty roads and Skyline Drive Sunday, and can't find fault. Yes I could have taken the the turns somewhat faster on small sport bike with my heart rate and excitement (anxiety) up. But I was doing 45-50 in 25-30 turns comfortably and relaxed! My wrists, elbows, neck, or back didn't bother me when I was done either! Three cheers for the Maxis putting pleasure back into pleasure riding! Riding since 1975.
