I had to laugh, when you asked the question, when was the last time you drove miles out of your way for a Whataburger? As a former interstate truck driver, I once had a craving for a Whataburger, and thus drove from Long Island, New York to my then favorite Whataburger restaurant in Dallas, TX., stopping only for fuel along the way. The staff was in disbelief, until I showed them my log book and fuel receipts, and gave me a second Whataburger to go, for free. Twenty-five years later, it’s still my only choice for a real Texas burger!

My wife and I used to live in Branson Missouri and every once in awhile we would drive to Rogers Arkansas to the Whataburger, just to get a Whataburger. Sometimes we would stay overnight in the little motel there in Rogers Arkansas and grab some taquitos and drive back home. It is one of my favorite memories of my late wife.

I remember my first time traveling for business in Texas. Passed 6 of those things on the interstate from Houston to Victoria.
Finally, got curious and hungry enough to pull over to the 7th one.
Nice lady asked “what can I get for you?”
I said I didn’t know and that I’d never been to a Whataburger before.
“You’ve never been to a whataburger before???!!!! Well, honey! You need you a number 1 combo and a shake. That’s the right way to start ‘round here!”
Good stuff, to be sure! Went a couple more times that week while I was in Victoria.

I'm from Connecticut. Back in the '80s I was a field service tech for the the company I work for. I was assigned to guide the installation of some equipment on a construction job in Texas for a couple of weeks. The Texas guys that were assigned to work with me asked, "We're going to Waterburger, wanna join us?" "Water Burger?" It didn't sound very appetizing, but I thought "Sure" why not. It was awesome! Love it still to this day. I always stop there whenever I'm in the area.

#1 Their drive-thru is usually top notch. Fast, accurate, friendly. #2 Park, go inside. Nothing beats ordering, getting that little "order number" thingy, and getting settled at your table. They bring your food out to you. A crew member circulates with a condiment tray and makes sure you have enough ketchup etc. (Also... try the spicy ketchup!) Final tip? If you like Dr. Pepper, they seem to have some sort of deal together. Whataburger's Dr. Pepper fountains all seem to have the syrup set to 11. Their breakfasts rock too.

@@Plasmacore_V Agreed; their fries are okay, but a bit salty, plus they just have a "different" taste from any other fries. The burgers are either good or excessively salty tasting depending on the cook and how new they are, and I never know which it's going to be until I take a bite.

We had a few Whataburgers in the Kansas City area up until several years ago when the last one closed down, but Patrick Mahomes has invested in building Whataburger franchises in the KC area again, and they have just started to pop up. The first and only time I ate at a Whataburger was actually in San Antonio, TX in March 2020, literally days before the COVID pandemic began. It thought it was pretty good. I would become a loyal patron if one opens up near me.

I moved to Houston to work as a manager for WhatABurger in the mid 80’s. I was personally responsible for the company’s switch to tray service at that time.
Before then everything was served in a bag to go style, with the orders written on the bags.
Mel left Whataburger because Mrs. Dobson wouldn’t allow him to also do beer commercials, so he went his own way. She also hated mustaches.

Chicagoan who just moved to Texas last summer. Whataburger is ... fine sometimes but nothing terribly special. I had never had Whataburger before a year ago so I cannot attest to how good they were before the sale however I suspect that it is not unlike what happened to Portillo's back home : pretty good/sometimes really good but once they expanded and went to commissary food the quality went really downhill. (and always a bit too expensive for what it is) In Chicago I would not expect Whataburger to last very long or gain any real market share other than quick expansion due to the novelty aspect. Think of when Krispy Kreme built some stores in the area; it was The Hotness for what year or two maybe and now they are just gas station donuts.

Even though they failed to hire me on two separate occasions, there is still a fondness for Whataburger. Californians who boast about In n Out burgers have no idea what they are talking about if they can't admit Whataburger is better - just all around better. And very Texan, too - large bun, large meat, fresh toppings. About the only rival for their burgers is Fuddrucker's which isn't fast food technically. Kudos to the founder's wife who didn't sell off the business when her husband died. That just shows how much the family loved their business.

I was born and grew up in Corpus Christi. It was a weekly treat for dad to go get the family Whataburgers every saturday night and bring them home for us all to eat at our TV trays and watch Gilligan's Island. It was a treat as a kid for me to go along and watch the burgers being made as you slid your trays along the rail till you got to the end, got your food, and paid. To this day, the closer you are to Corpus Christi, the better they are. Come up north even as far as Houston, and the quality is just not the same. Still better than places like McDonalds and so on, just not as good. I shiver to think what they must be like in other states. I'll still go there instead of the other places here in east Texas for a burger.

If you read a certain number of books they would give you a coupon for a free Whataburger with no additional purchase needed.
