My dad used to take me to Steak & Shake back in 1976-77 for lunch when I was in Kindergarten, which back then were 1/2 days, I could never finish the small burger and fries, but, by May 1977, when I was turning 6 & at the end of the school year, I was finally able to finish that burger and fries! I've always remembered that time we had together since I was his only son & youngest out of 5 children.
Kindergarten half-days were great! I was in it from 1978-79 so not far behind ya 😉. I bet you had a great bond with your dad. Did your older sisters like to tease you 😆?
@@scottfrenz They were 10-11 years older & almost out of high school, they did not, I was the only boy out of 5 children & the youngest, so my parents stopped when they had perfection, ME!
This is great! I can't tell you how many times I went to the original Steak-n-Shake. Heck. It was my mom's first meal after leaving the near by Brokaw (now Bromenn) hospital, after my birth. Oh, the days of the car hops taking orders and bringing food out. Such great memories from my youth. Thank you, RR!
Their downfall in the last 10-15 years was the ever growing menu, which slowed down service and diminished the quality. Most in my area around St. Louis closed pre-pandemic. A few reopened during this mess with a streamlined menu. The quality and speed now is an impressive turn around.
Yeah they're good (or used to be) but the last time I went there it took about 50 minutes to get our shakes and more wait for the food. And they weren't even busy. Maybe about half full. I loved the shoestring fries.
Thanks for covering Steak n Shake...part of my indoctrination to Bloomington-Normal Illinois in the 1980's was being taught the history of Steak n Shake! Favorite sandwich still is the Frisco Melt... but I had to let go of Orange Freezes when I found out I am diabetic. Hopefully Steak n Shake will keep going and return to how it was in the '80's...it was more expensive than other burger joints, but it's atmosphere was more like a restaurant than just fast food. One more thing... please don't forget to tip your wait staff!!! Regardless of who the jokers are that own the Corporation, it's the Wait Staff, Cooks, Table Bussers... and yes, the Individual Store Managers that make Steak n Shake special. Be sure to be a gracious guest and thank them too from time to time.
90 years is a long time. The one here closed and now it's a Taco Bell. I remember the food was great but there was always a long wait. We would joke and call it Steak 'n Wait.
When I was growing up my mom always told us how the Steak-n-Shake located just off campus of the University of Illinois Champaign was always packed, mostly with students. She lived in a little (well, it used to be) town called Tolono and she went to the SnS all the time. We went there lots of times when I was growing up. Had to have a milkshake.
The stake n shake in Springfield Mo is also right by Missouri states campus. They have a few of the original stake n shakes but that is the only one in its original form still on the historic route 66
I love it! That store is still in business and so nice to go to. The food is wonderful, as always! I think they recently upgraded/refurbished it or else it was closed for a long while due to covid-19.
I used to go to that one all the time after church when I lived in Nixa Missouri 20 years ago. That was a great place to eat and always nearly packed especially sundays after church from what i noticed when I went there.
I remember a STEAK and I SHAKE, located at Gratiot and 23 Mile Road in Chesterfield, Michigan. The Macomb County Health Department had shut the STEAK and SHAKE down. The Former STEAK and SHAKE is now a Happy's Pizza Restaurant.
About time. Great food and shakes. The three Houston locations went under due to mismanagement. I hope the next franchisee will get it right this time.
Since the C19 they have workarants. The very type of restaurant they advertised they didn't have because they had servers. Now there are no more servers. When you walk in you're greeted with a computer touchscreen where you place and pay for your order then sit down and wait for your number to be called then you go up to the counter and get your food and bring it back to the table, ie you serve yourself. They removed all of the tables in the middle of the seating area and now only have a few tables near the windows, they also removed all of the counter seats because this where you fetch your food from when your number is called. The seating area looks odd because there is a large empty area in the middle of what used to have tables and chairs. We've only gone one time in the last 3yrs because it's just not the same. We were the only ones inside and it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. If you're a drive thru customer probably not much has changed for you but the eat in experience has much to be desired nowadays. It wouldn't surprise me if they did away with eating in altogether and just strictly have drive thru ordering only. McDonald's and Wendy's have remodeled their restaurants much the same, they've done way with much of the seating area and now have order kiosks inside. Seems like the days of fastfood sit down eat in restaurants are now just a distant memory.
I grew up between Orlando and Daytona beach and loved eating breakfast at sns in Daytona .The silver dollar hash browns and egg bacon cheese sandwich was awesome, followed by orange juice and coffee.During race week you could catch all the nascar drivers in there as well. The original sns in Daytona was over the causeway on the pininsula back in the 50s from what I've heard, but ended up on the mainland side.Lots of great times and memories with the family returning from the beach.

My 2 brothers and I went too steak and shake every Thursday after choir practice at church with my mother, we got pop but once a month we got a milkshake. In Indianapolis Indiana in the late 1960. I remember going to Steak n Shake as a kid on Friday nights with just my Mom and brothers and sisters and then we got it to go to take out to my Father as he worked 2nd shift at the railroad yards.,We only had drive inn type in those days we ate the in the car. I worked for them the late 70's and early 80's as a teenager, in Galesburg, IL. I was one of the last car hops. One day I was sweeping the parking lot and I heard voices on a speaker and it was McDonald's next store testing their newly installed drive thru window. Steak and Shake eventually went to drive thru also was not best for their business model since they cooked to order unlike McDonald's. All my brothers and sisters had worked at McDonald's but I was proud that I worked at a better quality restaurant.

Great series Jeff, I love it. Two suggestions, Driftwood Dairy in Southern CA in 1950s and Ted's Trailer near Detroit Michigan. This is a wonderful series Thanks
I grew up in the St. Louis area and the Steak N Shakes that we went to had a place where you could order from your car. Maybe they should go back to having a drive in type, along with a small building with bar stools. In the 1960s to when I graduated high school (1974) I only knew of ordering a burger by telling them what I wanted on it (i.e. pickles and ketchup).
We had two locations in town, one was demolished a decade ago and is now a Culver’s. The other closed during the pandemic but the last couple of times I had been there, they were never busy and there was always a long wait. I do miss it but there is a Freddy’s in town which is somewhat similar.
I have been to Steak 'n Shake once, maybe twice. I just remember that they don't have counter service, just table service inside, and drive-thru outside.
Thankyou Enjoy your videos. I worked in restaurants from the age of 14 to 24 years old .Learned a lot of basic business , production, accounting, management. Only thing I didn't learn is how to find another career where there was warm food, warm girls & once every 14 days someone would hand you a pay check.

I got to try one in Florida years later, it was just a thin piece of “steak” and an ok shake that was definitely not cold enough or good for eating in the car.
I can't speak for all the Steak and Shakes, however the SAS in the Saint Louis region in the 60's and 70's were not only the best food places; they were the only place to go crusin'. SAS was like the Midwest version of American Graffiti. There were a few on the north and south sides of St. Louis where every weekend, it was the place to cruise and show off your cars. It was a time like no other in history and sadly will never be repeated. Those were the good old days...listening to Johnny Rabbitt on KxOK (Top 40), eating great food and crusin the Circle.

My boyfriend is a musician and a lot times after gigs, we'd hit up the Steak & Shake that was by my then apartment for a late night bite before he dropped me off at home. That location closed pre-pandemic, but there's another location about 5-6 miles up the road that's still going strong (I used to eat lunch at that one a lot when I worked up that way).
I have a Steak n Shake menu from about 1950. Some of the prices are: "Steakburger Lunch: Choice Ground Steak, grilled, served on large toasted bun with French Fries, choice of Lettuce-Tomato Salad or Baked Beans - With Bean Sauce....... 58 cents," "Steakburger - (our leader) It's ground from selected beef, served on toasted bun with Pickle and Bermuda ...... 23 cents," "Chili - "It's Genuine" Fresh daily from our own kitchens - Mild, Medium or Hot .... 25 cents," and "Jumbo Shakes Extra Rich and Thick, Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla or Pineapple ...... 21 cents." 24 locations are listed on the back of the menu from Bloomington, IL to Whiting, IN to Hot Springs, Ark. There you have it!

Yes! What a great place! I work @ a fam. owned seafood restaurant. A guest wanted a hamburger. I told him could sell him a aged Angus Rib-eye for $27(but, it will be the BEST burger you'll ever have). We have our own meat grinder. I received a $50 tip! It was a double meat patty & French fries. Please do one on Princess Burgers & their homemade root beer, Please? I'm from Houston, TX (Also maybe Charlie's Hamburgers...over two dozen SOLD!) LOL!
My small town in western Tennessee had one that my entire family loved. It was always busy, even during the pandemic. Our town has few restaurants to choose from. Six months ago, it closed and was torn down. They’re building that abomination of Tex-Mex there - Chipotle. Ugh. Now there is nowhere to get a decent milkshake.
Steak N Shake. A good hamburger restaurant that went downhill thanks to mismanagement and greed at the highest corporate levels.(IMO). The local SnSs closed. A slow drift downhill ending with non existent service and inconsistent management. Before it closed you could wait twenty minutes for service while the grill man hadn’t a burger on the grill and the manager argued with the waitresses. How could the make money on the $4 meal deal?
I miss having breakfast at Steak n Shake also miss having a waitress. But I understand COVID changed things. Still good food at a reasonable price. Garlic steak double with onions and pickles is the best
The company closed a lot of stores forcing them to buy a franchise fee .Saint Louis, MO closed them and Illinois closed them and Indiana closed a lot some where reopened but ice cream is shipped in and hard time getting it .
Anyone growing up anywhere near a Steak n Shake has great memories of their dining fare and experience’s. Including First dates. If we lose this great institutions, it will be a serious dent in our humanity! 😢
I know which ones you’re referring to. We would go to the Robinson location which I enjoyed so much I decided that would be the first place I’d take my friends when I got my license. And that’s exactly what I did - five (!) of us squeezed into the ‘79 Honda Civic I was fixing up and (oh so slowly) made our way from where we lived in Moon twp to that Robinson location. The shake technically was vanilla, but to me it was my first taste of freedom.
You lucky these days if you get your order in 30 minutes . There are a lot of them in Georgia that have closed. The last steak and shake that my family a d I ate at that was good was the one in Carrollton Georgia.
I like their shakes but I stopped going to the one near me when I waited close to 20 minutes for a burger and a shake at the drive thru. This was after a prior visit where the wait was close to 15 minutes. I thought it might just be an issue with the drive thru so on my final visit I went inside and placed a to-go order and...you got it, another interminable wait. I thought it might just just be the location near me but when I looked into it I found out long wait times are quite common. Too bad. Like I say, I like the shakes but I don't like waiting all night for it.

I like steak and shake, good meal at a good price.
When the wind by me closed I was very sad.
I'm from the indy area, went to the original when I was a baby
we have been to the one in memphis great food at a great price a logo you can use from a customer from the uk
"At the time, gas and fried chicken went together." Still does. Chili even more.
I like the narrator's voice, kind of reminds me of the same voice over from the TV show The Wonder Years.
Did the same thing over in Hermitage in Middle TN
Steak N Shake. A good hamburger restaurant that went downhill thanks to mismanagement and greed at the highest corporate levels.(IMO). The local SnSs closed. A slow drift downhill ending with non existent service and inconsistent management. Before it closed you could wait twenty minutes for service while the grill man hadn’t a burger on the grill and the manager argued with the waitresses. How could the make money on the $4 meal deal?
Never been into one before.
Steak n shake is the best.
I miss having breakfast at Steak n Shake also miss having a waitress. But I understand COVID changed things. Still good food at a reasonable price. Garlic steak double with onions and pickles is the best
Still Good $4 Meals, today. 🍔
i miss going to steak n shake we had 2 close to my home center twp. and robinson twp . the 2 are closed now
I know which ones you’re referring to.
I stopped eating red meat 6 yrs ago and haven’t been in a steak & shake since.
Chic fil a is my go to now.
Steak n Shake uses that good quality green leaf lettuce on their steakburgers not that cheap iceburg lettuce
Cool 😀
I like their shakes but I stopped going to the one near me when I waited close to 20 minutes for a burger and a shake at the drive thru. This was after a prior visit where the wait was close to 15 minutes. I thought it might just be an issue with the drive thru so on my final visit I went inside and placed a to-go order and...you got it, another interminable wait. I thought it might just just be the location near me but when I looked into it I found out long wait times are quite common. Too bad. Like I say, I like the shakes but I don't like waiting all night for it.
OMG I have eaten in that original store many times.
The ones I’ve been to in NC are pretty good but I don’t go very often.
Never been there.
