Protect the Pigs - Fox, Feral Cat, & Feral Pig Contract Shoot || Pulsar Thermion 2 LRF XL60 Scope

- Over 400 piglets in the previous 4 weeks have been killed by introduced foxes and feral cats on this free-range domestic pig farm, crazy to believe, but that's the reality of this job. I'm out under contract to assist (ground shooting) with what is a huge fox, feral cat and feral pig problem for these farmers.
Conditions couldn't have had more contrast to my usual feral pig jobs on open ground. This time I'm in the mix with hundreds of domestic free-range pigs running some new high end thermal kit. Is it up to the task? How did I tell the difference between a feral and domestic pig with thermal?
Stick around and find out !!!
I'm running my trusty 6mm BR fitted with a brand new, hot off the press Pulsar Thermion 2 LRF XL60 1024x768 HD thermal scope. There's plenty of action-packed footage in this video after dark showing that HD resolution and 60mm lens goodness. For thermal scanner duties, I'm running the amazing Pulsar Merger LRF XT50 thermal binoculars in a chest rig. With the internal image stabilisation and binocular form factor, nights were kept comfortable viewing for long hours each night.
No this isn't "hunting", I'm culling pests as requested and contracted to do.
I'm out cruising around in my new 4x4 for mobility, which is a 2024 VW Amarok Style 600. This vehicle is undergoing quite the custom build ATM, but in this video it only had the suspension and new wheels and tyres fitted. A SmartRest Racken Rest 3 Gun Rack worked very nicely indeed for many of these shots supported off the door of the ute. When on foot, I'm using one of my own EDGE of the OUTBACK tripods, link below.

We are not shooting feral pigs for human consumption on this trip. It is purely pest control of invasive species in Australia. These uncontrolled animals are an environmental and agricultural menace, often carrying bacteria and diseases like brucellosis. These pigs are all disposed of via burial in a pit the mornings after shooting. With so many domestic animals, the risk of disease is great if the carcasses are left laying around as carrion.
If you are interested in a thermal or night vision device in Australia, have a chat with Ben from Hunt the Night. He generally has the best prices anyway in Oz.

Rifle used, I always get asked that - It's a custom Tikka T3 chambered in 6mm BR, 18" Carbon Six CF wrapped barrel and Hi-Tec Industries CF stock. The suppressor is made by Shawmac Industries, which works amazingly well on this cartridge shooting Hornady 87gr Vmax Projectiles (all ammo is reloaded, no please don't ask me for load data as I don't share this information).
I am a vertebrate pest control - contract shooter in NSW. For those wondering about the equipment being used I hold the necessary permits and licences when working under paid contracts in NSW. This isn't recreational hunting, it's professional pest control. If you are seeking information regarding that, please check the FAR webpage for details in your state. All shooting is performed on privately owned farms, with exclusive permission granted in writing for paid services.
Please don't ask how much I earn or how to become a contract shooter. I'm not a business adviser. The requirements and information vary state by state. If seeking this information, research your own states legislation. I get this question a LOT, and it's not a path I wish to go down on social media.

Another no bullshit, no rubbish video of a blokes passion for his hobby.. Your the real deal mate... Cheers
Thanks for the kind words. Amazing that a hobbie and passion have evolved into a business 😊
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK mildly ironic that they were introduced to Australia for the purpose of recreational fox hunting. Nice optics.
Shooting sausages to save bacon 🥓 .. 😂 capitalistic means of production are definitely strange..!
I always find myself holding my breath as you zero in on a target! I could watch these videos all day!
Thanks! It's all about that shot.
Another great upload… I know that you have access to all the new kit, but man… you can shoot!!!! That last fox on the run… wow!!!
I get a bit of practice 👍
Nathan, I love the fact you make it well known that the animals you shoot are pests and not pets. The damage that these animals do to our property and livestock is huge and I for one appreciate the information you provide regarding the equipment you use.
Keep up the good work and excellent videos.
Cheers 🍻, appreciate the support!
the two running shots were excellent, always a bonus,
Cheers 🍻
those between the trees moving shots were so fire! insanely dialed in hunter, what a pleasure to watch the synergy of tech and in field skill. keep up the great work.
Cheers 🍻
Good work Nathan. It is rewarding to know you are doing an important job that is saving the babies.
Appreciate the kind words mate! 👍
Never thought I'd see that .. Protecting pigs from pigs. Happy new year mate, all the best.
It's a bit of a twist, eh? 😉
The clarity on that thermal’s pretty impressive. Certainly a massive improvement in comparison to the gear we were talking about only a few years back. You used it to good effect my friend. Well done👍👍
Yeah the technology is moving at a rapid pace, it's hard to keep up!
For a cool $10K a pop, they've gotta be impressive.
Love the outros, finding out the tally’s and how property owners are always happy is a great way to end the video!
Yeah, it's good to get the tally and see the impact we've had.
Awesome tech, running shots, commentary and editing mate - one of your best yet I reckon! Thanks for sharing & keep 'em coming - Cheers
Cheers mate, appreciate it!
G'day Nathan, mate never have a problem hitting the like button, your videos are absolutely awesome, I think this was one of your best yet. I like the way you explain what you doing and the way you identify you quarry. Keep it up, I am not a shooter but have grown up and lived in regional NSW all my life and see exactly what damage these feral animals do to our farmers weather it be their crops or livestock.
Cheers, glad you like it mate, I'm all about that "land management" stuff.
I wasn't expecting such clear reflections on the water in thermal. Amazing.
Thermal is cool as around water.
The image from that new scope is the best I've seen online from a night scope.
Check out RICO HD RS75. Prepare to get your mind blown. This one is 2nd best however.
Hey Nath, a cracking video and very well done. Our primary producers are under enormous pressure from feral animal predation so thanks to guys like you who help keep the numbers down. I was literally blown away with the first running fox shot and bugger me, you pulled out a rip snorter for the second!
Cheers! I get a bit of practice in to keep sharp for those shots 👍
Great vid you are clear and concise on everything you say!
Farmer has to be happy with this outcome!
Appreciate the feedback, glad it's clear and concise. 🍻
Hey edge of outback,I thought we were losing baby goats to the foxes like over 50 the first year , until I started spotlighting foxes and realised there was more feral cat predation going on than fox predation so feral cat population went down as well, next season only lost 4 kids also with help from 2 alpaca herd guards.
That's crazy indeed, and I'd believe it 😞
A mate had 2 alpacas looking after lambs. they seemed useless, too busy looking at each other. Sent one to another property; Success! Cheers and God bless, Malcolm,
*EDGE of the OUTBACK* Bravo well done, thank-you sir for taking the time to bring us along. GOD Bless.
Nathan Thanks mate, i think one of your best vids to date, and out of all your tally results the 2 x Moggies is the icing on the cake.. Super effort
Cheers mate 👍
......... G'day Nathan,
just love your videos mate. Best I have enjoyed; I mean "everything" just keeps improving, that new scope is "WOW!"
Cheers mate, I'm always trying to up my game 👌
10 out of 10 for that last running fox Nathan, absolutely spectacular!
Cheers 🍻
Cracking shoot Nathan, thanks for bringing us along 😀 👍
No worries
Happy New Year, mucca. 3mm off centre, mate, your slacking..... Another great video pal, thanks for taking us along. Jamie UK.
Same to you!
Great result! Really hoping you've tipped the balance back into the farmers favour here
Thanks mate, they're getting a bit of a breather!
As an American, I’m jealous of the tools you use for your job! Keep up the good work!
I don't think I've ever had an American say that. Thanks 🍻
Good job, unreal self control and clarity 🐷 No fences were injured during the making of this video 😅
Gotta keep those fences in good nick 👍
I’ve been watching for years, still impresses me with the quality of these videos. Wish I could afford thermal😂😂
Well done . Certainly some danger close moments there. Great advertisement for the new Pulsar.
Per usual, excellent content. The adjective that comes to mind is precise. Great shooting and enjoyed the different environment that you were working in.
Appreciate it, that environment is a bit different for sure! 😅
Mate love to watch your posts.
Like the last old mate said.
No crap just great footage and commentary.
Keep up the good work buddy.
Cheers mate, appreciate the feedback. 👍
Lovely Ep once again and man you can shot, great new product, And you do a awesome job keeping ferrell's under control
Thanks for the kind words 👍
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK No worries Love your channel,
It would be really cool to see a video breaking down what you charge for contracts. Great video, it is amazing how good this thermal has gotten!
Cheers, I've covered my views on that in previous Q & Eh videos 👌
Wow that shot at 25:05🎯👏
Awesome vision on that scope
Cheers 🍻
Another great vid mate. Really interesting indeed. Great footage. Your videos are the best of all. Cheers.
Thanks, I appreciate you watching.
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK absolutely my pleasure mate
The shot at 17:05 is impressive. Love your work mate.
Appreciate it 🍻
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK
On those crackers shots can you do a slow replay
I’m a shooter too (mainly foxs and deer) I have huge respect for those impressive shots
Cracking coverage - well done. Gee your shooting is improving!! 🙂 Looking forward to the next installment.
Appreciate it 👍
Those running shots you take are amazing! Absolute legend!
Thanks! I've put in a fair bit of practice 😉
Hi mate , i just want to say thank to the extreme video footage and editing that you do. Im amazed you haven't been hit-up to do some sort of hunting TV show. 👍🏼👍🏼
That would be an interesting twist for sure. Glad you like them so much 🍻
Very interesting and gratifying. Enjoy your commentary too mate. Cheers Nathan
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it 🍻
One of the best videos so far! Love your sense of mature humour! 😂😂
Cheers 🍻
Well done mate great effort I say. Job done right. Incredible footage through the new scope.
Cheers! It's been a great upgrade for sure.
Thanks!
I really appreciate that, cheers 🍻
Just found your channel, mate. Great shooting, editing, and commentary 👌 had to watch the whole vid, earned another sub 👏
Appreciate it mate, glad you enjoyed it!
This is why we'll never get rid of feral cats, dogs or pigs. But, like the old quote says "Whats the difference between a domestic cat and a feral cat? When it steps off the verandah!"
Pretty much 😎
welcome back nathan, missed your updates over xmas. hope you and the family had a great break.
Make sure you check the channel. I've posted a bit over the festive break 👌
cracking job you did there, liked the look of the tracker meal too.
Cheers
Some of those shots on the run were very impressive.
Cool vid
Cheers, they can be tricky to get right.
I asked my brother to check out your mates new store in Pakenham, as he lives just up the road. Well, the feed back was "Holy Sh*t the old gun shop on Pakey is in a world of hurt if they don't lift their game..... That new shop is awesome!!!" Cheers from Northern Rivers NSW 😃👍
I'm yet to go myself, but what I've seen, it looks amazing 👏
G'day Nathan 🎉. A job with a Difference to the norm. Enjoyed as usual with a laugh. Good Shooting. New Equipment looks good ❤🎉❤🎉. See ya on the Next One. Greetings From Geoff in Melbourne Victoria Australia 🦘.
Glad you enjoyed the new gear in action!
Mate awesome vid I didn't want it to stop. Great footage and very interesting with such a different environment. Keep up the great work and thanks again 👍
Thanks for the feedback, mate.
Well done mate, great start to the new year!
Cheers, good to be back at it. 😉
Love that set up. But no lie you are the calmest Australian I have seen. But that's not a bad thing I can actually understand what is said lol
Thanks, I think 😆
Nathan - Protector of the Porcine. Gotta be a tshirt in that ... 🤣 Definitely a bit different, some great shooting and it's amazing how much new gear you manage to showcase. Great stuff. Cheers PP
Good work mate. That was some cracking shots there. Great video👌
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it. 🍻
your vids are just great to watch,i do enjoy them ,your dry wit comments and humor is outstanding to me ,you are a extremely good shot ,marvel at some shots to show ,look forward to your next exciting vid thanks for showing us your expertise on your contract shoots :)
Thanks, appreciate you watching and I'll try to keep things interesting!
Happy new year Nathin 👍🏻🔫🦊 the fox tree had me pissing myself just heading off out at the 🦊 too bagging up to 6 a night here in 🇮🇪
Best of luck 👍
Awesome video mate, that XT50 clarity looks unreal 👌
Thanks! The image is amazing for sure 👍
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK now I just have to patiently wait for that sensor or a 60mm variant to come out in a Thermion haha 😂
IMO, the XL60 is where it's at with the higher base mag. An XT60 would be similar to a XL50 Thermion.
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK i reckon that would will be more suited for the areas I shoot anyway, keep all the benifits of the XL50's massive field of view, and gain an extra bit of clarity/shooting distance. Might be getting ahead of myself until they announce a 1280 model anyway 😅😂
Great job as always, im sure the property owners are well impressed! (that place is familiar to me ;) ).. Due to your vids and a mate showing me one first hand, Ben got my business when it was time to get some thermal gear 👌🍻
Appreciate the feedback, glad the videos are helpful!
UK here, I love you're content!
The piglet protector !
You need to get a cape mate 😂
That sow knows the score.
Cheers
Happy new year and welcome back...looking forward to enjoying more of your adventures in 2025
Thanks, cheers to you too!
Somebody’s mother in law snoring 😅😅😅😅 that cracked me up , and as usual great content mate ! 👍😎
Glad you enjoyed the video! 👍
Cracking video nathan. Nice running shots. 👍
Cheers 🍻
Jeezus mate. Next time give me a call. Few drinks and I’ll teach you how to have a proper rant. That was a very special hunt to watch. 👊👊
Cheers mate 👍
Great video mate., great to see them taken out so close to the domestics.
If youre after a good mattress, look at Exped inflatables, bit of coin but worth every cent.
Unreal! The mic on this new scope is fantastic
When you come across videos like these, you realise exactly how much crap is on youtube. This is quality viewing. Keep it up mate.
Appreciate it mate 👌
Those running fox shots were excellent Nathan 🤓
Appreciate it 🍻
Great video fella, glad you knew which ones to protect, love the running shots too 😂
Cheers. Thanks for your time. Happy New Year
Same to you!
Great video definitely put alot of trust in the gear when working around domestic animals. I got 2 foxes the other night funny enough the first one stood on the side steps of the car to get the view 🤣
That's a funny story! Glad the gear is up to the task.
Every (normal) man's dream. Excellent quality. New sub here.
Cheers! Glad you found the channel.
Good job! As someone brand new to shooting & hunting I got a lot out of night vision v thermal. I'm also in the HV area.
Glad you enjoyed the video, night vision and thermal are a whole different world!
Good nights shooting cobber. Great gear you are using. Just subscribed. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the sub, glad you enjoyed the vid!
Top banana fantastic content and information as usual looking forward to the next one in anticipation.
Thank you kindly!
Speechless mate. Absolutely bloody brilliant.
Cheers 🍻
That thermal is very impressive. Way out of my expense bracket.
Good couple of nights work Nathan I wish I'd had thermal gear when I was doing that kind of hunting 50 odd years ago all we had was a spotlight.
Things sure have changed since then! I was running a light not that long ago myself.
Great video mate. I saw reference a few nights back of feral cats taking down wallabies, so no doubt they can take piglets
They unfortunately are amazing predators
The kangaroo candidly jumping around behind the shot fox is the most OZ thing i've seen all day.
Hi Nathan, thank you once again for a wonderful video. Always love to watch you knocking them you on the head Cliff from Logan city, Queensland Australia. I’m on the big island
Thanks Cliff! 👍
For what you do for the country, you should of been on old Charlie's new years honours list Nathan. There was some very fine marksmanship in this video, cheers. (always wear ear plugs when the mother in law stays over. 😂)
Appreciate that, thanks for watching mate!
I am not a hunter at all...(spearfishing is the closest thing i guess) though i do appreciate the level of skill you have along with the straight forward commentary! Is it possible to keep the distance you shoot on screen all the time? Its always something i look for when you are shooting. Great video as always.
Cheers, glad you enjoy things. The LRF window is unable to be changed if operated time wise.
Very nice work Nathan. 👏 I would love to be able to do the same. Keep it up!
Cheers! Practice makes perfect. 😉
Great video as usual!! some amazing running shot!
Cheers
I gave up on inflatable mattress jobs ages ago. Helinox cots are the go. Cost a packet, but they are excellent. Have a look 👍🏻 I have the Cot One and the Lite. Wouldn’t go smaller than Cot One if space isn’t an issue.
Yeah, I've heard good things about those Helinox cots.
Yes, feral cats are opportunistic predators and could potentially take domestic piglets, especially if the piglets are very young, small, or unprotected. However, this would be relatively uncommon because piglets are often under the protection of their mother, and feral cats typically target smaller or more vulnerable prey like rodents, birds, or reptiles. If piglets are left alone or in poor conditions, they may become more susceptible to predation.
Your fast brotha I wanted to see footage of the 60 your the best
If I were Pulsar, I'd work with farmers to sell paint/ink brandings and/or ear tags that worked with one of the vision modes on their scope for target identification purposes.
I'd be curious as to the reaction of cats and foxes to drones.. because it seems to me that finding the feral animals is the hardest bit, you could have a drone with AI target identification zipping around trying to identify targets, and even potentially herding them closer to the shooters zone. Then you could relay that target location into a map on your thermal gun scope.
If you were a farmer, even a static trail cam style setups would help identify key target areas and provide times and routes.
They do have a few trail cameras set-up. Drones can vary easily scare a lot of animals, others not. Really varies.
Different type of video but still fun my Grama would always say work is work if your earning for your family that's all that matters✌️ Napa California
Couldn't agree more! Cheers mate
Hi Nathan, been away a bit, but what a great couple of days of work. Love how the domestics don't move. 😊
Thanks 👍
Great vid mate, was glued to the screen.
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed it!
great video young lad, enjoyed a different experience i would imagine, much kudos.
It's a bit different alright, thanks for watching mate.
Excellent video, very entertaining, well done mate
Thanks, I appreciate it 🍻
Videography amazing as always, awesome video mate :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great free range pig farm and and plenty of foxes nice
You got that right!
Just another great video... keep e'm coming !
Appreciate that 👍
Love ya work mate
Cheers 👍
Show, parabéns pelo trabalho! Manda um pulsar para mim 😂😂
Nice work again. Free range pig farming is interesting nothing like that around here all in sheds or Eco shelters. definitely a bit trickier for you. I was interested that you could take some pigs. (looked like younger ones) with the 22 and was wondering at what range are they fair game. Thanks Again. 👍
