    Quick & easy to understand video. No talking for 20 minutes about what wood consists of like so many videoers across the pond. Good one. Thanks.

    Hello, this is amazing, and I am putting together a desk. I am recycling two pieces of wood from my old table. Never done this before, and I have been searching for a video of how to that is straight to the point. Easy. I will keep you updated. Thank you ever so much.

    Why do you call that jig with the dowel through it a ‘mitre gauge’?

    Nice work. Maybe I misunderstood the first part, do you put the nail at one of the scale lines you saw on it? Because otherwise, I guess you wouldn't be able to get the center line on the boards. I mean, a scale is always needed in the dowel?

    • @finchcraftuk266
      @finchcraftuk266  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      alosgm1 hi
      No the scale part isn’t really needed, the lines were only there from a previous project. A nail is all you need and you can then line up for the centre of the wood with the block
      Hope this helps

    After he solves how to center your drill point, your next problem will be how to drill a perfectly straight hole which seems easy.

    Is that also called a marking gauge 🤔 great video BTW..theres also a hack for this ..you lie a tiny nail between the two pieces of wood you’ll lined up ( the head of the nail is in the centre of the two pieces of wood ) the you knock the wood with a 🔨 .and the nail head makes a indentation on both sides of the wood ..thats where you drill …P.s. this hack is like “Dowel Marking Tips “but cheaper 😉

  • @kathrynnewton8721

    How do you know that the hole is plumb?

    • @finchcraftuk266
      @finchcraftuk266  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi
      The hole doesn’t need to be 100% plumb, but if you wanted to get it as accurate as possible then I would suggest using a drill press, or practicing on a piece of scrap wood a few times

    Cool, with such terrible reviews on the dowel jigs I'm looking at in my price range, I figure I'll probably do a better job by just lining things up myself. Thanks for the video as proof.

    • @finchcraftuk266
      @finchcraftuk266  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Matt thanks for the comment Matt, some jigs are ok but if you use this technique then you don't have to spend a penny

      I'm in the same situation, Matt. I only thing I would invest in is a guide for my drill bits; I don't have a drill press and often I'm not at 90 degrees when drilling by hand.

    • @finchcraftuk266
      @finchcraftuk266  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John Bell, if you need a small tool to help you drill at 90 degrees, Izzy Swan has a nice simple idea here th-cam.com/video/r7yLMN-nMu0/w-d-xo.html
      Hope this helps

    If the hole is not perfectly 90 degrees, you get the alignment problem you discussed at the beginning. Your idea only halfway solves the problem. I'm sure you know that drilling perfect 90 degree holes every time is not likely. At the end, your picture clearly shows the boards not lined up properly (not the bowing) but the butted edges. Look closely at 6:45. Sloppy work.
