Just signed up for the viewer games. Hope to get the chance to play you. I finished 3rd in the world last season, and am currently ranked 25th, so it would make for an interesting game.
@@augustinwai6399 Haha I'm not a streamer unfortunately so I wasn't recording. It also appears that he changed his account name bc I can't find his username on the leaderboard. Probably wanted to stay anonymous?
Oh also something I noticed, at 11:30 when you showed text explaining what YOP means, you should show the physical card on screen as well, so that way people who don't know what Year of Plenty does off of the top of their head can still understand. Also also, how tf are you so good at editing lol
Brilliant insight and so true. Understanding how your position will develop and adapt over time against everyone else’s position is key, and that takes practice. A theme I wanted to share during this session with Dylan was the idea of playing optimal, even in a worse position. In a lot of games, you can have the a “weak” position to start but by being efficient and creative with trades, you can win a lot against sub-optimal or inexperienced players. All the best! - DD
@@dandydrew Oh, appreciate the reply! This is very interesting. I guess it takes practice as you write, the trained eye. But over time it gets better : )
But how? The only setup that makes sense for a road game would be the the top 8,3,4 with the 5,4,11. Try to quickly expand to 5,10 and 9,10 and get good trades for the rare wood. But playing without wheat and ore and only 19 starting pips on this board is extremely hard especially since blue now gets a killer setup with the lower 8,3,4. Chances are that you end on 7 points, while everyone else buys cities and devs like crazy. Funny that Drew frist thought that this is a great board for 4th position. It's literally the worst you can get as 4th.
@@Ashwath-p8c i see that too but it could work ok with 6311 to wood port. Also for audience that isn’t very good (like me lmao) it is nice to hear the full breakdown so I know what separates the top players from the rest
I definitely would have gone with the unpopular position of 9,10,11 and 5,10. This lets me point up to the 3:1 port as well as giving me pretty much guaranteed best road building in the game while still having a starting dev card and a good ore wheat positioning. Potentially expanding to the 4,5,11 if no one takes it.
Would be interested to know much do you put the win down to your post placement play? I think lots of players that are pretty good choose the same starting position but don't win this game because they don't track opponents hands and do trades as well as you and Drew did in this game.
Strongest Ore, Wheat, Sheep players gotta city up asap, then buy devs like crazy. The fact that he didn't dominate in the largest army race shows the errors that he made.
I think orange should connect his road pointing right on the 9 ore so that he‘s able to get one more settlement on the 12 wood without having to leave the road path
As a non-catan player Im so confused. Sounds like so much was going on, but i dont know how from some dice rolls and cards there can be so many intracacies happening
Here's a video introducing Catan: th-cam.com/video/oiQ6SgBzfqY/w-d-xo.html Also, check DyLighted's playlists for strategy videos where he goes through things in more detail and at a slower pace.
Could you for next time have more varieties in times when we can play with you? Because I live in Europe, all times are far too late for me. Great video btw.
Why no thought of double 843? Yes it's pure FoF, and no wheat =defeat, but look how much wheat there is on this board, with so much wheat you could likely get sheep port via a sheep for wheat with blue who'll double up on 6 wheat. I'm not saying it's necessarily the right play, but it has it's merit and shouldn't be unnoticed IMO.
@@catanace1741 LOL, Dylighted talks a lot of sh*t here but he only won because he got army from a lucky mono. Plus I 7'd out of cities two separate times at 32:45 and 37:43 (the second of which would have been the win). I will admit that pointing my road down instead of towards 3 for 1 port was a mistake.
@@MK-yg2np I was black. Yes I made a mistake not pointing road towards 3 for 1 port, but my main problem was drawing horrible devs to start (no knights), and due to lack of port I wasn't able to city up as quickly as I would have liked. It's hard to see from DyLighted's perspective but I wasn't able to get a city for a while due to my ore being blocked. And then I lost army to DyLighted when he used the mono.

@@dandydrew What an amazing resource, thank you! I just watched the first three videos, are there more available somewhere? Or not yet produced?
This was the most engaging catan game I've seen. Please start making videos, we demand catan content!
One of the most chaotic tables I've ever seen and you two are just chattin' along, it's so refreshing.
What a game! Holy crap. Watching two of the best Catan players work together and win with the worst position is pretty sick.
This consistent and high quality catan content is my highlight for 2023. Thanks Dylan!!
hot off the press + an awesome video concept! Can't wait to watch & very thankful you're back in the swing of regular uploads, Dylan
What an insane finish to this game, anybody could have won it, big props for winning this game from the worst position!
In my defense (I was black), I did beat DyLighted in the other game I played against him! But he doesn't post that game of course...
Time to come out with your own video for that game :D

Awesome game! Awesome discussion! And I love the genuine happiness in your reaction when y'all get the win! Great vid.
Such a tense game, but that makes the victory more glorious.
What I learned is that you don't look at your first 2 settlements, you plan your first 3 or 4 to find the optimal position!

both of you: hmm maybe time for a wood brick strat. Also both of you: completely do not discuss 843
3 is not enough brick

May be. I think Dylan kind of mentioned that where he said 4511 will be taken and hence going to 5 brick won’t be possible to play a proper road game
Gr8 video ❤ hope to see you in top 10 soon
Was I the only one thinking that Dylighted blundered when porting for 2 wheat at the end? Thought the plan was always to settle but city works too ig

Surprised black wasn't really threatening the whole game.
A lot of really suboptimal plays

so glad ur posting again!

Hey man, great video! At 2:51, there is a mistake in your visualization for the 8 4 3 spot - you put a projection of settlement on the wrong 8 4 3 :)
It would be nice if the Orange player had a different color in the chat, hard to read for me :D

I think 9 ore isn't the block near the end because it's still such a bad roll. Nice win tho!

At 30:59 you could have settled on the ore port and then the wood port using the road builder, then city to get the final VP
They already played a knight at the very beginning of the turn. Nice thought tho
