While I’ve been doing this series, I’ve been seeing a lot of comments that have a problem with the title of my last video on season 4, about how it’s the start of the Golden Era, because some people think the Prison was the best era of the show and it all went downhill from there. Well I can tell you from ratings of the show, viewership numbers, and most importantly: my own opinion, that you’re wrong for that opinion. Because guess what, we’re onto season 5 and what I consider to be The Golden Era of the show.

Rick’s face when he executes the abusive husband always gives me goosebumps. He’s just waiting for the go ahead from Deanna and once he gets it, no hesitation. I miss the Ricktatorship

Something that always sticks out to me about that scene, was that Rick reaches for his gun as soon as Pete shows up, but Carol stopped him and said "not now" probably because she assessed the situation (likely from her own marriage experience, not just apocalypse badass survival instinct) She knew the abusive/drunken Pete would likely escalate and hurt someone, scaring the Alexandrians/Deanna.... and thus making them more likely to accept Rick. It's really chilling (especially considering Carol's later struggles with her guilt) to realize that she was willing to sacrifice Reg or anyone else who might try to stop Pete, to make Rick look better. She knew Rick confronting Pete with the gun at that moment would "prove Pete right" that Rick is violent, and would escalate to a conflict between two armed men (ofc Rick would wipe the floor with Pete, but Carol knew it would scare the softer Alexandrians again + Rick would get exiled + and then the group would have to take Alexandria), versus Pete screaming at families/kids with a sword was going to look bad for him. It was more dangerous for the bystanders and the lack of action killed Reg!!! BUT it was what got Rick into Deanna's favor, and got the group into Alexandria for good. So, in a way, when Rick says "how many of you do I have to kill to save your lives," Reg should be counted as one of the lives they took.... 🙃

Absolutely adore this season, Terminus arc (ep1-3) and Early Alexandria arc (ep12-16) are some of my favorite episodes in the series! Seeing the contrast in some of the most depraved people/groups in their world versus people desperately trying to cling to what the old world was like (to their own detriment) was very engaging. Rick was of course very compelling, seeing him in his most primal state yet, and other characters like Glenn (who I felt lost a LITTLE bit of intrigue in s3/4), Abraham, Carol, Sasha and get to stand out as well for better or worse.
The Beth hospital arc is definitely a big thing that drags this season down, especially with Dawn just being a very weird antagonist and the arc having a VERY unsatisfying ending. That plus some questionable character deaths like Tyreese (moreso for the WAY he gets chomped) and Noah (whose very early death if awesome from a practical effects standpoint, but feels like wasted potential and makes Beth's death feel even more pointless) are my only major gripes with the season. Other than that, I love the cast we have this season and the other plot points in the season. This is my second favorite season!

what I loved about Eugene's story line is this: It didn't matter wether or not you picked up on the clues and had suspicions or not. It was either a satisfying "I knew it" moment or a stunning plot twist. Great TV either way.

I've always said my favourite season is a tie between 4 and 5, specifically 4b and 5a. It honestly may be my favourite stretch of any tv show I've seen. The relentless exploration of the characters and their unexpected yet incredibly deep relationships, the shifting dynamics between them, the way they show topics that are shockingly dark (even for this show) in a bold but still very sensitive way. To me, this is the blueprint of what these types of shows should be like. Nearly every episode stands out for how essential it is for the development of the characters. It's so intensely brutal and emotional, but unlike some other seasons I don't think it overstayed its welcome or got so hopeless it became boring. I can understand why people might find it too slow if they prefer the action elements of this show, but I've personally always loved how much these episodes make me think

I’ve been waiting for a video like this to come out where someone is explaining how AMAZING this season is - and how it could even be the best Twd season. Yes I agree the whole hospital arc was NOT needed - Beth could have died in another way.
The reason I think this season rules is because it is envelops the meaning of family and love in TWD and I think it’s linked to the “coincidence” thing which I like to view as fate. It was fate that they all reconnected in some way after the fall of the prison and it was just tear jerking and had me on the edge of my seat!
The best parts of this season for me is Tyrese’s death / misdirect of it being Beth’s funeral, Michonne and Carl’s start of a mother/son relationship, Daryl and Beth’s near-relationship and learning more about Bob as well as the intro to Abraham, Rosita and Eugene. Oh and the Rick biting the throat off of that weird Claimer group. I enjoy how Aaron was introduced as “someone who was too good to be true” however I really hated the way the Alexandria plot drew out because imo it went downhill from here for the entire show.
Anyway I share the majority of your views and love how well you’ve explained and described them using quotes and scenes from the show - your videos are always amazing!!

I thought you brought up really great points in how they began struggling with the shock value being more on character deaths even if they didn't make any sense rather than a natural good story end for characters. As well with Rick killing Pete, since he is an abusive husband it imo is a parallel to Shane taking matters into his own hands when it came to dealing with Ed, but Rick did what he almost did.

14:28 Storytelling is often built on coincidence but, in my opinion, this is rarely done in a balanced manner. For instance, the deus ex machina trope can get old very fast. Especially in dramas because it lessens the impact of the story's dramatic elements/stakes. This isn't so much a problem in comedy (Always Sunny for instance) because it's a convenient way to hit the reset button and get your characters out of their goofy ass shenanigans.
However, this isn't to say coincidence is necessarily a bad thing, just Deus ex Machinas. I much prefer when dramas use coincidence to get the characters INTO trouble. AKA the Diabolus ex Machina (Devil in the Machine). A good example of this is Hector Zeroni in Holes being in precisely the wrong place at precisely the wrong time for the stolen sneakers to land directly on him just as the cops are strolling by looking for the thief. This is how we get one of our protagonists' stories going and is the catalyst for what will eventually play out.
This also happens to be one of the criticisms of The Last of Us Part II that I strongly disagree with. So many people point to the coincidences in that game that lead to disaster, but none of them lead to anything GOOD. None of these coincidences get our characters OUT of trouble, they always get them INTO it. Abby happening upon Joel while out searching for him & just so happening to get stranded together as a horde of infected swarm them. Ellie leaving the map behind after an extremely traumatic event for Abby to find, thus leading her to the theater. Every coincidence leads to CONFLICT rather than RESOLUTION. The Diabolus ex Machina as opposed to the Deus ex Machina.

I never really realized how stacked season 5 was. Whenever I remember it, it's like I compartmentalize story arcs together on their own so it's surprising to think that Terminus, the hospital and Alexandria are from the same season even though I've watched it a couple times.
I wasn't a fan of how they handled the hospital and the final outcome but I am a fan with how yummy Emily Kinney is and when Noah later got wrecked the way he did after he abandoned her makes this both the worst and the best season.
Bonus content: It's pretty amazing to compare Carol from what we see leading up and in to season 5 as one of the stronger pragmatic characters of the group to what she became in season 11 where the writers found a way to find the worst traits in previously aggravating characters like Andrea and Lori then dialed her own trauma up to 11.

Yes it was an amazing season!! If it wasn't for the hospital arc, it would be the best for me. 1-3 is the climax of the show in my opinion. But that is really the epilogue of season 4. I loved the Abe backstory and the Tyreese death episode. And the Alexandria eps are awesome also. All of 5b I love. The Beth arc though. I don't like the character arc and what happened with her but I'll say this: all the side stuff is awesome. Rick running down Bob with the police car. Rick quoting Gareth accidentally "You can't go back Bob" and realizing it. Daryl and Carol bonding during the search for Beth. Sasha sniping walkers as Rick approaches the cops. The nod back to season 1 with the bombing of Atlanta. The pink walkers stuck to the pavement because of the Atlanta bombing. I also think that the hospital arc was a symbolic fairwell to Georgia and came full circle with season 1. It was nice to see Atlanta downtown one more time (more overgrown and crazy) before the show headed to Virginia. Sort of bookending the Georgia chapter of the show. That said, if they could have made the Beth story amazing, then this season would have been the best no doubt. Kind of a shame.

I didn’t watch The Walking Dead as it was coming out and instead binged it in 2023. Watching it for the first time all together without having to wait made it both good and depressing. I watched Beth’s death on a Saturday night and Tyreese’s death the following morning, which led to me being really sad when I went to church that day. Every time I go to church now, Beth and Tyreese’s deaths replay in my head. These were two moments that have really stuck with me. Don’t get me wrong, I love this season, but it really messed with my psyche. Man.

As usual, perfect analysis. This was, in many ways, my favorite overall season, but only has 2-3 of my favorite episodes. Looking back nostalgically after a decade, I think for me it was because it was the season when the group was all together in one place for a extended period and this was my favorite overall group. I think the "hospital" arc, while having several amazing scenes was ruined at the end with Beth's death, seemed like all of that buildup for nothing. For me, the next season, Season 6, was where things started to go off the rails quickly. There were many bright spots, but the show was starting to drag. Season 5, kept the action and drama mostly balanced and helped move the story along. Compared to what came after it was the Golden Era.

Season two was my Roman empire, it's the best solely for Shane's downward spiral. I did enjoy season five but this was when I fell off the series unfortunately. RIP Noah, his death was nightmarish, poor fella. Your walking dead series is my favorite coverage on TH-cam! Team Carol foreverrrrr.

I will take this opinion to my grave: It would have been a very simple and wayyyy better fix if Beth died at the lineup with Negan. You could more realistically get away with and portray Maggie and Negan’s current relationship, it gives it a lot more aspects to consider and play with.

i always said that it would’ve been interesting if they didn’t have the hospital arc and sorta let beth be forgotten about to instead bring her back seasons later as one of negan’s wives

watching this series with my mom, she really liked this season. She constantly asked me what was going to happen, she seemed so engaged. Even she said "This is pointless" when Beth died. Her sentiment was that of: "Why did we go through all of this just for her to die this way?" The same for Tyreese.

As someone who only ever binged twd i can for sure say from Hershel's death thru the end of S5 is ultra depressing when its just hitting u back to back, Beth, Tyrese, and Noah in like a 6 episode span, the group at rock bottom, eating the dogs like that's a rough patch to get thru fr lol

I'm glad i didn't watch a single episode of twd until season 11 was about to release, i bought them all on dvd and just hit that wide open and i am a big fan now. Well of most of it, now trying to force myself to get through fear the walking dead on season 5 now also bought them all and never seen any before. And fear is nothing like that feeling you get from the original show.

My first thought is always how this is the best season of the show, but then I remember the Grady Memorial Hospital story arc, which was seen in season two in a quick scene, a tiny foreshadowing perhaps. That arc drags it down a bit and thus I don't know if this season is better than season 4. Season 5 as a whole is perfect.

So even though most if not all people didn’t like the hospital side story, I know for my friends and I it gave us our fan theory about the cops being the ones who killed the vatos and elderly from S1. Yea most people still believe it was the Governor but it was a fun and interesting alternative seeing how the doctor said to Beth that they been there since the beginning so they’re in the area. But that Abraham reveal, that he was about to end himself moments before meeting Eugene made his break down after finding out he lied super brutal, also i remember when I first saw the S5 finale I was a little disappointed because they overhyped it when they mentioned it was gonna be an hour and a half long so I went in expecting that the wolves were going to attack Alexandria but they ended up saving it for S6 but all in all S5 was the high point of the show, sure it had its flaws but that was definitely a great time to be a WD Fan

One thing that really p!ssed me off, which is slightly off topic but relates to the shocking deaths point you were making is that they started introducing cool characters in the various shows and make us like them just to kill them in the same episode. Happened alot in Fear and a couple times in TOWL.

I recently watched this show for the very first time & it comes across like a streaming show to me. My partner & I both said if we were watching this week to week we wouldnt've made it to season 6 (I personally hate Andrea/Gov storyline & would've tapped out at season 3).

Season 5 of TWD is really good, but also really disappointing in a bunch of ways. I agree with what you said about the first three episodes, the buildup from season 4 and Episode 1 of S5 making our characters escape. The story was really coming together. I also did like the Beth episodes, I thought it was cool that she was given her own arc but all of that was thrown out the window has soon as she died. Noah’s death a few episodes later also made it even more pointless. If they had done something different for that stretch of the season I really think this would be the best season of TWD.

The thing that made Hershel’s death so great was the loss of giving second chances and showing kindness first. Once he was gone it was representative of the groups perspective on how to treat other people. Beth was no really representative of anything.

I have mixed feelings about the 5th season. On the one hand I hated how they handled Beth and later Noah. Both death´ seemed so wrong, not really adding anything to the storyline. Completely wasted. Same goes for the divided storylines told in seperate episodes, having several weeks to wait to learn what happened to one specific character. That was kind of annoying back then, as you mentioned.
Still, on the other hand, I loved the whole Terminus arc, their payback, Bobs death, it was so incredibly well done. Same for the wandering phase before finally ariving in Alexandria. That was probably the best part ever, for me at least. Just this whole survival thing, it felt real. I also like how the group settles in in Alexandria, I really enjoyed how the group slowly started to really like the place and integrate into the community.
Seriously a lot of good stuff happened in that season and I enjoyed watching it and still do to this day.
However because of the negative parts, I already mentioned (and basically just took from your video) I also couldn´t give it a 10/10 rating, more a 9,5/10 max.
