      They have a functional system and they will use it no matter what. That system says sell all cars after a specified time so that they are not out of date and at a set mileage to avoid maintenance and increase resale value. Also all vehicles need returned with a full tank. EVs don't have tanks, so that equates to battery. Just because those numbers were based on 20 years of ICE cars changes nothing. Do it by the system to save/make money.
      The system failed. They lost money. That is Tesla's fault. Not Hertz management.

    Another reason it went poorly was because Hertz did not plan appropriately for the charging.. Just like legacy auto tries to make an e.V on a gas platform hertz tried to expect the same behavior from a gas car rental. They really needed to put fast chargers out their rental locations and let the people bring the cars back With a low state of charge. That could work as long as Hertz was able to send them out with 50% state of charge.

      I tried to rent a Model Y from Denver to drive home to The Bay Area when we couldn't fly back as planned. They wouldn't rent to us because, "We would need to depend on the Tesla charging network and they couldn't allow that". I said I have a Tesla at home, I know how to use the SC network. Nope, had to rent a Camry. Have you ever used the Camry traffic aware and lane control cruise control? Save yourself the panic and don't. The speed control works fine, the lane control is like playing billiards on the freeway with your car.

    I test drove a Model 3 yesterday and when I got in it knew it was on a test drive and had a whole load of information which included all of the stuff that you need to know to drive the car. They should have something like that for rental cars, owners can put it into "rental mode" when they drop it off at the pick up location which means when the renter uses it they get all of the information they need.

    The bright silver lining in all of this Hertz debacle is that their stupidity gives first time affordable ev access to the average car buyer which I believe is a really good thing. There’s so much anti ev propaganda online that keeps too many car buyers from exploring the adoption of electric vehicles. But now that there are a lot of quality viable used electric vehicles available to explore thanks partly to Hertz, the more people who buy these cars the more people who know these people will get the chance to learn that electric cars are in fact far superior to gasoline and hybrid cars especially if you are a homeowner who can install level 2 access on your property or garage. As I see it now, no matter the current state of propaganda against ev adoption, it won’t be much longer before the average American will finally realize they’ve been lied to and will swiftly begin to flee from gasoline and hybrid vehicles in masses. In my metropolitan city I can see it’s already started here in NC.

    I rented a MY from SIXT in Germany for a couple of months. They seemed to follow the same Hertz model. No instruction. (OK with me, since my regular drive is also a MY.) They actually wanted the car back before the end of the contract so they could sell it. I refused and they said that was fine, but I am sure it was sold right after return since SIXT is also getting out of the Tesla rental market.
    Part of the basic problem is that companies need to explain BEVs, whereas there is no need to explain ordinary cars. That is a barrier to buying or renting and it will be up to BEV companies to reduce the NEED for special education. Get rid of the "only charge between x and y%". Obviously, get usable charging as commonplace as gas stations. Make sure DC chargers are as reliable as gas pumps. Offer training to neighborhood garage operators. Reduce the "specialness" of electric car operation.
    Don't just blame the buyer, whether it is Hertz, SIXT, or the guy next door.

    There's no splash screen or other introduction for the likely first time Tesla drivers. You're pretty much just dumped off to fend for yourself. I love my Tesla but I have to say for someone arriving at an airport and encountering the Tesla UI for the first time after only driving familiar ICE cars, I can imagine that this would be a jarring experience.

    I’ve been renting Teslas from Hertz since they first became available (5+ year owner of a 2018 M3P). The QR code popup on the screen is an awesome feature, but Hertz UK does not have this yet. What a PITA that you don’t have any remote access: no walk up lock/unlock, no phone access (charge state), no charging notices, etc. But otherwise, rentals in the U.S. and U.K. are a great option for Tesla owners. (I’ve also done Turo rentals, but my wife is not a fan and occasionally it takes some extra effort and cost for airport delivery/pickups, and the insurance coverage is secondary.)

  • @mikereinhardt1244
    @mikereinhardt1244 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    One thing both of you missed about the "high cost of repairs" is that Hertz was reportedly self insuring when they sell insurance to the renter. That is how they got caught with high cost of repairs. There is no high cost of maintenance, and they never said that, they have been misquoted about that repeatedly. Many of those were the uber drivers you mentioned. Apparently the rate of damage from the ride share rentals was very high. So they rent these cars out for ride share, those ride shares buy the insurance from Hertz, Hertz self insures. Then they get wrecked and Hertz is sitting on inventory they now can't use waiting for parts that they can't get.
    Completely agree though that the real problem was Hertz was dumb. Anyone with interwebs access could have told you that parts for a Tesla take time to get because Tesla does not prioritize the parts market. They will of course use the parts they make for warranty first since they are giving those users service loaners. Selling them for insurance covered repairs is last on the list. That is a problem Tesla will have to wrestle with, if it goes on too long and gets too bad the myths about high insurance costs will start to become true.

    I was confused when Hertz sold their Teslas after just 2-3 years. Makes sense for a cheap ICE car, because careless customers will wear them out fast. But a Tesla can take all the same abuse without breaking a sweat. The computer will prevent almost all damage from improper use, there's not much in the powertrain that can wear out, and the general wear and tear is also minimal due to the premium materials used. Ironically an allegedly poorly built Tesla looks and feels almost brand new after 10 years and a million miles, while ICE cars fall apart and rust away after much less.
    Rental companies should keep Teslas indefinitely. Essentially until they die. They won't even look outdated, because Tesla changes the design rarely, and software updates keep the functionality up to date for many years. My 2016 Model S still holds up against any new car from other brands, and even beats them in many ways. Not to mention that it still looks futuristic and sexy.

    The answer is really obvious. People don't want to rent the dang things. Most of the time when you rent a car you are usually in a location that you don't know much about such as work trip or vacation. Who in their right mind wants to go on vacation and have to hunt for charging stations, hope they actually work and spend an hour of your time charging a car when you can pull right up at a gas pump and fill it up in less than 5 minutes. You're right the warranty and the insurance are really not a factor. What is a fact is if they were renting them and making a profit then they would still have them in their fleet

The last time I rented a car was for a 2,400 mile trip of steady driving and the last thing in the world I would have wanted or needed was to have to worry about whether I'd find a charging station and worrying about whether I'd make it to the charging station and worrying about whether the charging station would work. Charging stations may work for long trips but gas stations will absolutely work and there's no worry at all. That's how I feel, worrying about charging up is just one less thing to stress over on a long trip and I can't be the only one that feels like this, I'm sure there are plenty more people who don't want the hassle and worry of charging an EV as part of their vacation / business rental experience. How come you guys don't talk about this?

    • @FutureAZA
      @FutureAZA  23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Because most of us drive Teslas, and "finding a charger" isn't a thing. The car does that, and tells you how many working, available stalls are at each one.
      You put in your destination (even if it's thousands of miles away) and the navigation does the rest. I've never thought twice about it on a road trip.

    Hertz had the wrong "business model" for EVs. Renting Tesla's to Uber/Lyft drivers, who have no incentive to maintain battery, or due diligence for "accident free" driving. Constantly charging to 100% and down below 10%. Also, renting on an "all day" basis like an ICE car without any mileage limits is not going to preserve the life of the car. When trying to use a EV for rental/taxi/delivery service, "CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM"(!)

    Hertz is nuts...rent those cars out for another few hundred thousand miles. Take advantage of the low maintenance and high service life (and amazing performance). Hertz way overcommitted. In a market where a trivial percentage of people were driving EVs (~2%), they wanted an order of magnitude more of their fleet to be EVs (~20%?).

      @@davidsoom1551 That's just not true. As more people buy EVs, the ignorance around them fades away and more people are interested in owning EVs.
      There is no EV industry. It's the vehicle industry. This year is not going to be a good one for vehicle sales, ICE and EV, because people are broke. But EVs will continue to displace ICE vehicle sales. I wouldn't be surprised if the EV % of the market increases again this year (global for sure, US as well) due to ICE sales falling harder than EV sales.
      Peak ICE was 2017. Those ICE sale numbers will never be seen again. And that's because the "no one wants them" sentiment is not true. As people learn more, EV interest rises and ICE interest falls. Until recently, that was only happening in CA and among rich folks. As EV prices fall, the knowledge is going to spread through less affluent circles.

    I think it is misplaced to blame Hertz for not educating car renters how to use a Tesla. First of all this is a self-inflicted injury by Tesla by making their cars so different that you need instructions for how to operate it. For better or worse, ICE cars follow certain conventions so that i can hop in pretty much any car and in a minute or so figure out all the controls. If the Tesla design changes are so great they should either be intuitively designed so anyone can figure them out and/or design an intro video/help screen for vehicles used by rental companies. Eventually, having Groq AI in the car will let any user just ask "Hey, Tesla, how do I...?" I say all this never have even sat in a Tesla ... though i have peered in a few Tesla windows
