I have to say I was quite shocked to see on Goodreads that you DNFed The Memory of Babel, and while I can understand your reasons for it being problematic word choices, I, too, am pretty certain that it must have to do with the English translation. I personally read the whole series in German and thought it a very good translation (especially compared to some others I've read before). I found it to be a really smooth and pleasant reading experience and flew through all the books almost faster than I could purchase them. And particularly the third and fourth volumes (which, in my opinion, are very different from the first two) made me completely fall in love with the series. I really hope you get the chance to read another (better) translation one day.
If you are looking for another memoir, I highly recommend “Born a Crime”, by Trevor Noah. He also narrates the audiobook, which makes it all the more engaging, IMO.
You talk about Brandon Sanderson so much that I caved and borrowed the way of kings from the library. I am halfway through it and went ahead and bought the box set of the first 3 books! I absolutely love it! Thanks for that recommendation
A great memoir is “Know My Name” by Chanel Miller. It’s about the Stanford sexual assault case (Brock Turner) and her writing is AMAZING. I liked it even better than Becoming and I didn’t think that was possible
The loud gasp that came from me when you revealed your DNF, it was indeed shocking because I know just how much you LOVE that series! I hope it can be resolved, just so you can read it again and not be bothered by what the issues were
I wish I can read so much, like you. But I just feel like I'm in some weird lifelong reading slump. I'll start most books and just lose interest even when I used to like it. Same with most dramas I watch. Can't seem to finish anything. But i love watching your reading vlog & wrap ups. It's very calming n kinda fun to go through the reading journey with you. Thanks for sharing
Same, I'm in the same boat rn. I've started a few books, and even tho I enjoy it while reading, I just never feel like picking them up when I stop. I've just stopped picking up books and randomly started watching Chinese dramas lol
@@tasmint4849 ya. Occasionally an audiobook will grab my attention. But so far i think i have only finished like 13 books this year. But this is spooky halloween month, which is my fav, so i think i might finish more dramas n books. Currently, watching a chinese period drama too. Not sure of the Eng name but in Chinese it's 偷心画师 ♡
I'm so sorry to hear that you couldn't finish The Memory of Babel. It's definitely not the strongest in the series but I really liked it by the end. I just can't wait for the fourth book, I have so many questions (and Ophelie and Thorns are just the cutest cinnamon rolls). Based on your review, I'm glad that I didn't wait for the English version and that I decided to read it in my mother tongue earlier this year. I really hope that you'll decide to continue the series some day!
So sad you dnf The memory of Babel, I loved it, especially the second half when it really picks up. I think the slurs or inappropriate language used to describe people are not “approved” or endorsed by the narrator, they are described by the characters as being spiteful and also I think the author used those terms as a way of stating the hurtful, cold and skewed society of the arcs. But that’s just the way I saw it and felt, different ways of interpreting a book I guess. If you weren’t having a good and comfortable reading experience , it’s totally understandable that you dnf
I personnaly read it in VO and I didn't see any problematic descriptions so I am having trouble determining what Reagan is talking about. That said, I adored every second of it and I am currently reading the final book in the series!
Day 1 of trying to get Reagan to read The Ascendance Series by Jennifer Nielsen. The main character is so sassy and I love him, and in the second book there is a bunch of pirate stuff. Lots of politics, treason, all the good stuff I think you would love it.
I’m struggling with the language in The Memory of Babel atm, my guess is that they used a similar word in French because it’s the remit of translators to be accurate in their translations. Makes me wonder if either author or translator understood the impact of the language in the book and the taboos they’re associated with in English. It’s especially hard because I’m part of one of the groups that the R-slur is used against. But I can’t say I was surprised to see it, given the description of fat people in the first two books was atrocious- horrible words used, only “bad” characters were fat aside from one, and their fatness was described in negative ways every single time they were on page. I’ve kept going so far since the premise is so interesting, but we shall see how I go with book 3.
I also feel like political correctness and awareness aren't really a thing in France, at least nowhere near to the extent that they are in the UK or US. Like I've tried to find French (as in of the country, not just the language) literature about being a PoC in France and it's surprisingly difficult to find; if it exists, it's not being publicised to the same degree as books like The Hate U Give or Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race. Granted, I'm not French and I don't live in France, but these are my observations as someone studying French at uni. But yeah the lack of political correctness and awareness is one of the things I struggle w/ the most re: the culture.
어리석은 바보 thank you so much for your insight. I have heard that French culture is quite different and it makes me wonder if francophone Belgians (like the author) are the same. I can try to overlook it if I understand better the cultural differences between my culture (I’m Australian) and francophone cultures. And I think it would be not necessarily wrong for me not to keep the differences in mind, but maybe potentially unfair.
I was wondering what Reagan was refering to, because as a French person I've read the whole tetralogy in French and didn't notice the slurs... I myself have been called the r-slur, so maybe I'm wrong but I feel like I would have noticed it if it were present in the French original version. I also think, having met with the author, that Christelle Dabos herself may have been called that in her life and tries to convey the absolute opposite message (opposite to insulting neuroatypical people, I mean). I cannot emphasize enough that the translators have NO obligation to accuracy in their work, which is sad I know. Maybe they chose a word that was "accurate" giving the context of the book, which takes place in an fantasy version of the edwardian era, a time when atypicals would be badly called and treated. Also, if you're yourselves sensible to the subject, I advise you to be careful with the 4th book, which takes place in an asylum...
@@Amyduckie Hello, i have read the series in French and I am a francophone Belgian. I am genuinely intrigued to know what word choice you did find problematic. I do pay a lot of attention to that when I am reading and i didn't find anything wrong in the original version. Yet I might have no seen it. Lots of my friends who I consider (I don't know how to say:) aware about different kinds of issues and who are very clever in words (language studies, etc) have read this book and never one of them have though it was problematic as well. Also, the author was born in France. I don't know when she moved to Belgium but i think it's fair to presume that both French and Belgian culture have had an impact on her. I do think culture is very different from the US(/UK). But it's kind of hard to talk about it since i can only talk based on my experience and not on objective facts. And I don't know much about the publishing here since it's so small tbh. The book market is mostly made of american/english books.
The stormlight archives is next on my list of Sanderson. I’m working on the second mistborn right now. It’ll will take years but I know the whole cosmere is incredible
I've had my eye on Rick Riordan Presents titles for a while so seeing you read Dragon Pearl made me excited! Time to grab these books, heheh. I'm also incredibly chuffed that you're loving Hobb this much. Welcome to pain, bleeding for these characters, and loving them with all of your heart.
I read Becoming this month too, and I am so glad that you said you cried and laughed out loud throughout I found myself pulled to the point tears many times. I have never been quite so humbled, inspired and reinvigorated by a story! And the audiobook is just wonderful!
The fact that you DNFed The Memory of Babel is pretty shocking. I only picked up the series because of you and actually I just finished the book last night. I loved it and am honestly trying to think about why you didn’t. I had a ARC, so I don’t know if something changed between that and the finished copy. Was it something regarding Ophelia’s character or was it the world-building? I’m just honestly curious.
After hearing you talk about the Space Between Worlds in you reading vlog I added it to my book of the month box this month. I was intrigued but I had been waiting to hear what people thought before committing to it and you sold me on it.
omg im so excited you picked up jade city! i read it at the start of this year and its become my new fave fantasy the sequel jade war honestly blows the first book out the water! look forward to reading it 🙌🙌
Oh no I'm so worried I was so looking forward to the third book 😱 but at the same time I get what you mean about translation so I'm curious to give it a try and see what was up
I first heard about Robin Hobb from your videos, now I'm only missing the last book in the Liveship Traders Trilogy, this is definitely one of my favorite fantasies too! Thanks for all the recommendations
I just finished How Much of These Hills Is Gold (C Pam Zhang), and it absolutely D E S T R O Y E D me. It was SO good. For a parallel universe/alternate lives adventure, I highly recommend Trilogía Victoriana (Félix J. Palma). The books are huge and follow a lot of different characters around, but the main idea is that H.G. Wells has to deal with time travel and universe-jumping. He also meets other Victorian authors, like Bram Stoker and Arthur Conan Doyle. It's great. ❤️
I have a non-fiction recommendation based on your love of magic systems. I haven't read it yet but it's on my TBR. 'The history of magic from alchemy to witchcraft, from the ice age to the present' by Chris Gosden. It's about the role belief in magic has played in human societies around the world and it's interaction with science and religion. Looks super interesting.
I was similarly disappointed with the memory of Babel. The wording was definitely a strange/insensitive choice, but I also had issue with the story itself. The first two books had so many different settings, plot redirecting events, mysteries, and opportunities for character development, but this was sooooooo monotonous. I did made it all the way through, and the last 10% was definitely by far the best, so here's hoping the 4th book turns it back around.
I also had a few issues with Memory of Babel that I chalked up to translation. Except I read the German translation. Maybe it's not just the translation but the author?
I loved Cemetery Boys so much! As a Mexican, I feel like Aiden did an amazing job describing our culture. I'm so proud of this book, it was heart warming
I immediately bought Ship of Magic on my Kindle, because I'm writing a story set on a merchant ship. It sounds perfect for inspiration to me, and also costs only 2.99$ right now.
Sad to hear you DNFed the Memory of Babel but I completely understand. I found some of the descriptions (especially in the third and fourth book) problematic, as well (German translation). However, if you didn't enjoy this book, I don't think I'd recommend continuing as, on top of that, the fourth book was a disappointment in regards to the overall story and the "big reveal", too.
To tell you I am UPSET is an understatement. I read A winter’s promise and LOVED it so much and I JUST bought The missing of clair de lune. UGH is it really bad or should I continue with the series? I’m so conflicted
Oh dear, I just got my copy of The Memory of Babel yesterday and now I'm worried... are there slurs? So excited for you to read more Hobb, I think each book just gets better. Happy reading!
The sweater the color ahh perfect!👌 Jade City waiting for this book. I had a good month of reading. Way of king The cemetery boys Akata Witch.. i loved this book so much.🙂 Prelude for lost soul. You just made me excited to pick up the space between worlds!! 😀
I finished my 16th reread of A Discovery Of Witches by Deborah Harkness! It’s still JUST as good as when I first read it! The romance is EVERYTHING! Can’t wait for you to give it a try!
What problematic word choice? I just want to know bc I’ve thought about picking up this series but don’t want to waste my time if book 3 is problematic
For me, there were two main choices that bothered me. First, a young girl that can’t walk or speak is referred to as retarded. This is seen as a negative by the main characters, but I do wish Dabos had picked a different word. Secondly, an Asian woman is described as having an oriental doll face and is compared to a porcelain doll. This one really bothered me especially since this was done by the main character. Now, most of this was in the first half and I really enjoyed the second half, but I understand if those are deal breakers for you.
@@samthebest48 I dont remember Dabos using the word retarded in the original french text, she used the word "reversed" for all the characters with the peculiar affliction (trying to keep this spoiler free), i think i indeed remember the porcelain doll thing being in there tho :/
You know I think that's literally just how Dabos writes... I started reading the first book in French but dnfed it bc I found the writing very odd so it doesn't surprise me at all. Would like to know which problematic words you found in the third one though!!
Love your channel =) You bring up so many good books that I wanna read. I recently started reading fantasy, but I'm struggling with finding books that's good to start with. Fantasy sounds so interesting, I would love it if you could give me some examples of where to start to get better into the genre.
Jade city sounds a little similiar to one of my favorite book series the black blade series by jennifer estep first book Cold Burn of Magic, you might enjoy!
You can start with the Liveship traders Trilogy but I would rec reading the Farseer trilogy first! (both are considered starting points but you need to read both before moving onto the next set!)
The "weird language choices" in Dabos' books is very much a Dabos thing. I'm French so the serie is quite big here, and I read everything to try and understand the hype. I hated every book, and her so very weird and very annoying language choices drove me nuts.
@@ainasubirats9606 not in English, as I read them in French. Old words in otherwise very modern prose, words used to have some sort of stylistic effect but the meaning of the words don't work well within the sentence. I'd read the same sentences several times wondering why on earth she chose to write like this, because it was really offputting, it pulls you out of the story, and you're wondering what the f she's trying to say.
Def want to try several of those- thank u! I just finished the audiobook of a YA paranormal 'Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter's by Nikki Jefford and thought it was great- abt to leave Sten to book 2 in the series!
Hi Regan! Will you recommend "The world between us" if I adored "Dark matter"? I read it recently and fell in love with the multiple universes concept, I think it's fascinating. Love you & your videos, stay safe!

I didn’t love Ship of Magic. I preferred the Farseer Trilogy but I’m definitely continuing the series. I think I just don’t like books about boats/ pirates
Omg I'm so relieved you didn't like The memory of Babel either! I'm French and I read it a while ago and I really didn't like it! So I don't think it's a translation issue unfortunately... I'm not good at DNFing books so I bought the last book of the serie anyway but still didn't touch it 😂
I’m French so I read the memory of Babel in its original form and I can tell way that it wasn’t as good as the others but I was mostly disappointed by the last book the all book is quite weird and the ending not satisfying I know that a of people hated it
I primarily read English books, because I know some translations just get under my skin or totally change the vibe of the story. For instance, I really didn't like the translation of the Harry Potter books in Dutch, especially certain names and terms were translated so strangely imo, and I felt it lost a lot of its appeal.
I watched into my mom's room while she was reading Becoming and she was openly spbbing hard enough that I thought someone had died. So it's effective, apparently.

I don't know why I've been dragging my feet with Ship of Magic. I loved the Farseer trilogy.
it's soooooooo goood
I’m with ya. Need to get to us ASAP!
@@Loonadance1212 yeah in french it definitely didn't come off like that, "r*tarded" is such a dumb translation omg
Exam week is killing but your videos give me life!!!!!
Oh my gosh, that is an absolute gorgeous sweater, I bet it is real soft!
I love your pink jumper! Looks super cosy
Do you need to read a different trilogy before starting the Ship of Magic trilogy?
You can start with the Liveship traders Trilogy but I would rec reading the Farseer trilogy first! (both are considered starting points but you need to read both before moving onto the next set!)
PeruseProject Thank you!
I loved Jade City! Only read the Farseer Trilogy so I'm debating the Tawny Man or Live Ship next... do you have a recommendation?
Hi. I started following you. It's quite nice how you speak about your books. Cheers from a fellow reader.
The "weird language choices" in Dabos' books is very much a Dabos thing. I'm French so the serie is quite big here, and I read everything to try and understand the hype. I hated every book, and her so very weird and very annoying language choices drove me nuts.
What do you mean by language choices? Can u put an example?
L'écriture est telle aussi problématique dans la version française?
@@ainasubirats9606 not in English, as I read them in French. Old words in otherwise very modern prose, words used to have some sort of stylistic effect but the meaning of the words don't work well within the sentence. I'd read the same sentences several times wondering why on earth she chose to write like this, because it was really offputting, it pulls you out of the story, and you're wondering what the f she's trying to say.
Yo.. Regan s back...my amazon wishlist ready to become biggers with her book recommendations. 😉
Ahhh I love that you're loving so many books 😍
I love your videos and I feel like we have similar tastes in books! I read An Ember in the Ashes because of you and I loved it!
Don't worry.... The Mad Ship is just a lighthearted romp....
Hahaha oh no
Now I have to read Jade City. You made it sound so exciting.
I just discovered your channel and i'm obssesed
Def want to try several of those- thank u! I just finished the audiobook of a YA paranormal 'Aurora Sky: Vampire Hunter's by Nikki Jefford and thought it was great- abt to leave Sten to book 2 in the series!
did u read the night angel trilogy? im only on the first book but it's becoming one of my favs alrdy!!
I am super excited to pick up Jade CIty this month! It sounds SO fantastic!
Hi Regan!
Will you recommend "The world between us" if I adored "Dark matter"?
I read it recently and fell in love with the multiple universes concept, I think it's fascinating.
Love you & your videos, stay safe!
Yes I think so!! I also really enjoyed Dark Matter and it def has the same multiworld vibe!
@@PeruseProject oh thank you so much for answering!
Great I'll definitely pick it up ☺️
Btw, I felt the same about Becoming! 😍
I’m sorry but I could not get through the Space Between Worlds I’m 150 pages in and I’m just so bored there just isn’t any excitement to really real me in unfortunately ☹️
I always stare at your Foundryside hardcover...that is now impossible to find.
Wait, is it really?!
A good memoir if you can stomach True Crime is I Choose to Live by Sabine Dardenne
Woah seeing you DNF the Memory of Babel is surprising!
I finished Speaking in Bones and Virals, both by Kathy Reichs. 5* for each
Is there romance in brandon sanderson’s books?
Girl. Memoirs are my thing. My top recs are:
- everything I know about love by dolly alderton
- born a crime by Trevor Noah
- more than enough by Elaine welteroth
- how to murder my life by cat Marnell
Definitely borrow the audiobooks of these ones too! Such a good experience listening to the authors
Ship of Magic sounds very interesting!
Don’t worry lol about DNFs. I stopped Dracula half way through lol.
OMG LOVE THE SWEATER!!
Just finished my way of Kings reread last night!
I never thought you would dnf a book! By the way I got interested in Brandon Sanderson thanks to you :)
thanks my friend. with love.
I'm honestly so excited to read Cemetery Boys
Love your videos!! Another amazing memoir is Educated by Tara Westover, it is so good! Also, you should do an updated favorite fantasy books video =)
I didn’t love Ship of Magic. I preferred the Farseer Trilogy but I’m definitely continuing the series. I think I just don’t like books about boats/ pirates
I still liked it though
Omg I'm so relieved you didn't like The memory of Babel either! I'm French and I read it a while ago and I really didn't like it! So I don't think it's a translation issue unfortunately...
I'm not good at DNFing books so I bought the last book of the serie anyway but still didn't touch it 😂
I’m French so I read the memory of Babel in its original form and I can tell way that it wasn’t as good as the others but I was mostly disappointed by the last book the all book is quite weird and the ending not satisfying I know that a of people hated it
come for the books, stay for the jumpers
I primarily read English books, because I know some translations just get under my skin or totally change the vibe of the story. For instance, I really didn't like the translation of the Harry Potter books in Dutch, especially certain names and terms were translated so strangely imo, and I felt it lost a lot of its appeal.
Definitely want to read Jade City. It sounds so interesting! :)
I cannot wait to pick up Cemetery Boys!
This series of Robin Hobb is fantastic.
Wow. Now I'm a little bit nervous strating The Memory Of Babel
Loved this video!!
I love Dragon Peral
I need to get a copy of cemetery boys!!
Where does she get those Robin Hobbe covers??
They are the UK covers! I bought them through Book Depository!
Oh my gosh, thank you so much!!!❤️
I watched into my mom's room while she was reading Becoming and she was openly spbbing hard enough that I thought someone had died. So it's effective, apparently.
♥️🍂
Wow❤
💕💕💕
Read Love Is A Four-Letter Word! 📚
Great wrap up!
