      @dolanroufs1032 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Caterpillar 941b. You're absolutely right. Hydraulics have nothing to do with it. That particular machine has a 1500 ci slow running engine (1600 rpm no load). It's not the horsepower it creates ( a 300hp). It's the sheer torque of big cubes and wonderful engineering. Noone; and I mean no one does it like CAT

    • @justinmartin8887
      @justinmartin8887 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dolan Roufs nothing to do with cubics. It is simply gear, or hydraulically reduced speeds to increase torque, with mass to obtain traction

    Hi, Folks.
    Neat video and thanks to Moss Rods for sharing.
    I don't know how many other people noticed it but that D8 was getting close to its maximum pull with that sled load. If you look closely, you can see that, once the full weight came on, the front of the tracks are not immediately getting right down on the ground until about the mid-point of the tracks. This means that it's getting close to its maximum pull. If it had not had the blade on, it may not have done as well and there certainly would have been more track slip,
    That said though, 60,000# is a pretty good pull for that model of D8H, which I suspect is one of the early 235 HP ones and not the later 270 HP version.
    Just my 0.02.
    You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

    • @dplant8961
      @dplant8961 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Rpbert.
      I doubt changing the ripper height would have made any difference as the sled appears to be attached to the tractor drawbar underneath and ahead of the ripper. That said though, it is unusual to see that style of ripper on that model of D8.
      I was mistaken the first time I looked at this video as I thought it was an early D8H with 235 horsepower but, on second look, it is one of the later D8Hs at 270 hp.
      Just. my 0.02.
      You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

    Here in the UK my father used to grow potatoes for a frozen potato chip manufacturer. In winter with very wet clay soil they used to pull the big harvesters with wheeled tractors providing power to the harvester and a caterpillar tractor in tandem providing the ground speed regardless of conditions as the factory needed the potatoes to arrive at a constant speed. Then at the end they put the blade back on and level the field. It was just brutal but effective application of power to get the job done.
    No contest there in that video pull as the caterpillar tracks just dig in until they get traction.

    • @MossRods

      If you haven't seen the videos, I highly recommend searching "yellowstone snow plowing" on youtube. I live close to Yellowstone National Park and in the spring the snow gets so compacted from snow groomers that they need to break it up by hooking a road grader with a v plow to a pair of cat dozers. Essentially making it a draft and plow team.

Then pop #3 and send them on down the haul road grinning. Good job years ago. Had a lot of fun and got to listen to the 8 and 631's bellow! Not like the HISSS of today's stuff.

      That's a pitiful deal. I ran an old 8-H with a set of rippers on a dam job pushing pans. I know blamed well that sled is nothing next to push loading a 631 pan in hard clay. Those pans were over 8 feet wide, closer to ten the way they looked and they were cutting all across the moldboard. He should've been able to push a blade and pull that sled in half if he'd had any grousers on those track pads. But it would've been in #2 or 1 with me, not 3.

    • @shortthrow50
      @shortthrow50 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      bottom line, this video made it seem like a d8 struggled with this bullshit load. If ran properly, that d8 would pull double that weight through the dirt. These dozers don't struggle in rpm with any weight. They lose traction. You cant stop these dozers gearing in first gear at all. I used to do plenty of slot dozing. And if any one doesn't know about slot dozing and weight transfer, google it. You cant stop these dozers at all with pulling dead weight. especially a measley 60k pound dead weight. That is absolutely nothing at all. That's a walk in the park

    Just a curious question. How would a TD-24 IH or TD-25 IH.handle this? My Dad owned 1, it was the old Gasoline/ Diesel. he had it when he was Hanging Structural Steel.. .

      Same outcome as the D8 with either of those big IH machines.

      @@glenbreaks5448 Thank You Glen. just out of curiosity how much
      H.P. & Torque did the TD 24/ TD 25 Engines produce, would you know??

      I don't know torque numbers but the first year TD 25 was rated at 235 HP, just ahead of that years D8H which was rated at 230 HP.
      The late 241 series TD 24s were rated lower, except on the Nebraska test the late TD 24 made almost identical drawbar hp as the D8H, same year.
      The first year TD 25 made quite a bit more drawbar hp than the early D8H.
      The later D8H had a couple of boosts to output.
      My father owned 4 TD24s. He sold his business in 65 then ran a 63 D8H for his brother-in-law.
      He said the IH24 and the D8h pretty similar for capability. His 24s were gear drive, the 8 Powershift.
      He liked the planetary steering of the International and the Powershift on the 8.

    Good but obviously tracks have more traction than tires... Plus I believe tractors are weight limited?

    A dozer half that size would pull that sled, you cant compare steel tracks and tractor tires.
