    This stuff is my bread & butter - before you dive into the whole "It's dead! Bin It!" thing - check out the wiring loom thoroughly. Many many VW 1.9 TDI "Faults" including no start, bad start, "It's dead FFS!" are wiring related - the loom is not as durable as the metal - you will get loads of "This engine is toast!" hints that are actually wiring related. I've stripped down a lot of these - the metal in them is good - excellent even - but the wiring lets them down. Before you yank it out - make sure it isn't just electrical gremlins. Even with 400k the innards are usually alright - but the ancillaries are shot. Poke ALL the ancillaries first before you yank it. :-)

    Well done for a 1st go very impressive
    Only things I’d have done different for anyone thinking of tackling this
    Do driveshafts 1st, crack the bolts loose on the hubs while it’s on the floor. Remove them fully as gives more clearance when removing engine. Along with better access for disconnecting turbo
    Do all the stuff underneath BEFORE you drop any fluids. Your never going to catch all the oil, brake fluid, coolant etc. So get it all done while the floors nice & dry. Downpipe, sensors, shafts out, crack off gearbox steady but don’t take out until same point you did
    As you say take the slam panel/rad pack off as one.
    No need to remove alternator & starter unless your transferring to new engine. If transfer yes easier to do them while engine is still bolted in
    Main pain in the arse is the 2 bulkhead heater matrix pipes as you said. Sometimes there a doddle. More often than not they don’t want to come off. Sometimes easier to start lifting engine out/away to get better access 👍

    Great video, this made me dare to do mine. A bit more fiddly as it has AC but I managed to unbolt enough stuf so the whole front can swing away to the left (as seen from front of car). My BLS threw a rod at highway speed leaving a fist sized hole just behind the oil pump 😢

    • @timsmith321

      Recently purchased a 2013 Golf Tdi that had already threw a rod also. I wonder what was the cause? Hopefully with regular scheduled engine oil & filter changes, warm ups before driving, future rod breaking can be avoided. When my health improves, can't wait to finish fresh engine install. About 70% finished currently picking away at it as a little time opens up here & there.

    I bought a golf Mk6 back in December 2020, previous owner never changed oil and he never told me.The car developed oil pressure after 2weeks of driving,next day I went to garage,they changed the oil and I received a bad news... the oil previous owner used was extra thick probably gearbox oil to hide the rod-knock noise, that way he was able to sell the car.I was advised to change the car or engine-£1,200 for labor 😔.
    My questions are:
    -do I need to code the ECU?
    -Do I have to send any paperwork to DVLA,if the engine is basically the same?

    In many cases torque settings are only there to make life easier for beurocrats and lawyers.
    Unfortunately once the manufacturers provide a torque setting people in a profesional setting have to abide by them or risk law suits.
    Some manaufacturers are providing torque settings on domestic electrical fittings meaning electricians are having to buy torque screwdrivers. and have them calibrated every year.

    That catalyst is probably coked. I gutted mine. You can just drill it out from the top through the opening and hit it with a chisel. All the material comes out the downpipe. Make sure to wet it, or run a hose on it whilst breaking apart the material.

  • @stuartgill912
    @stuartgill912 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, I love the video but I'm a bit concerned that you have used a BLS engine, are you going to replace the con rods? My wife had a Touran that spun a crankshaft bearing and smashed the connection rods to pieces filling the sump with shards of metal. Just don't want this to happen to you after all your work. It seems to be very common on that code. I spoke with the garage a local VAG specialist who said that this is common with that BLS code. Just thought I'd warn you but I'm sure that you are aware of this

    Step 23: Turn engine over and clearly hear the low compression on one cylinder 😕 EDIT: I posted this before seeing the glowplug code, my bad 🤦‍♂️ sounded like it on the first crank!

      Paul, am in awe of your diagnostic skills 👏 👌 Wish I had the experience to tell this kind of thing from the noises. All just sounds like rumbling to me, starting or not starting 🤔
      Thanks for watching 👀 🙂

    Hi mate I have a mk3 caddy 1.9 and a golf mk5 same engine and same year would it be a straight swap?

      Hi Jason, can't say 100% but if the same engine code, I would recon so... same kind of thing as I did here. 👍

    What was the original problem ❔

    • @FloweringElbow
      @FloweringElbow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was so bad ;) now it's fixed anyway. Tandem pump seal blew, sending diesel into the oil. Filled the sump and caused hydro-lock and extreem ware on the cam shaft lobes because the oil wasn't oil anymore...
