Martin has a lot of female energy in that he's not afraid to write about emotions.

🤣 You were so into it! I love this song, but if I remember correctly they're not too fond of it. Oh well, it's a great, fun song in my opinion!

@@kellsinpdx It's great! Very fun. There's pretty much nothing that I don't like about it.

DM themselves HATE this song, and they basically act like it never existed. They consider this the last of their immature/pop phase (1981-85), the album that followed this in 1986 (Black Celebration) marked a distinct change and step forward into more dark territory. Martin (songwriter) described the message of this song being about giving part of yourself to your partner, almost physically giving it away (your heart) and trusting them not to damage or abuse this special part of you. He looks back on it as a very naive idea.
Please hit up DM's "Only When I Lose Myself" (1998) next... beautiful, dark ballad.

Martin has remarked that their songs emote: Pain and Suffering in Various Tempos!

I was close! I said Shake The Disease which is the song that came out just before this one. They released 2 songs not on an album to celebrate the release of their first Singles compilation. I love this song. Apparently the band aren’t too into it but what do they know lol. Keep these reactions coming! The way you’re grooving to it I know you’d enjoy Lie To Me, Leave In Silence (which has a terrible video and even the band agree) and Everything Counts. Dave Gahan in full baritone :-)
As for the meaning I like the idea of this being written from the female perspective.

I just want to add my 5 cents...
Depeche Mode have always made songs that were way ahead of their time. These are songs from the 80's and 90's, and you would think they are new listening to them in the present.

It makes total sense just literally, but there are meanings beyond meanings. This is one of the most hated songs of DM, including by themselves, but one of the most loved, by me.
