  • 5 bass trombones and 1 contrabass trombone in a spectacular Wagner compilation.
    A new version of my arrangement "Wagner for 5 Bones" which I recorded in 2004 on my solo cd First Song.
    For the fun of it and to create a reason to study, I made a new home recording.
    I'm very happy with my amazing Thein trombones!

    Ben, I play a Bach 50B3LO, double independent valve bass trombone. I'm not an expert and play in my local community band. I find that low C, just above pedal Bb, is the most technically challenging to play well, having to using both triggers with the slide near 3rd. I use a Bach 1g megatone mouthpiece, that works well for me all around. Is this just a hard note to play on a Bb instrument, or do you find no problem on your Thein, not counting your master level of experience?

      I am not by any means a qualified speaker on bass trombone, nor any brass instrument necessarily, but double-trigger C is generally a very insidious note on most bass trombones even up to the pro models. Even if it slots well, it oftentimes sounds very 'blatty' compared to both D above and Bb below. It's not unlikely to be a fault of the horn. You're also right as far as I'm able to tell that the lowest C is often easier on F instruments than Bb instruments.
      As for your particular model, while the 50B3 is certainly a well-respected horn and has seen use in many symphony orchestras, many criticize its valve design. The 50T3, sporting Thayer valves, is considered far superior in the trigger registers. That's not to say you can't play a double-trigger C with your current setup, but it could explain why you're having a hard time.

    With all those bones together, who needs an orchestra?

    which do you prefer bass or F contrabass?

      For me too be honest bass trombone. F contra is a wonderful extra:-))

      Ben van Dijk Nice, do you have any tips for developing pedal range? I can play all the notes down to my pedals quite well but as soon as I hit my pedals the tone dies

    • @KBuser1992
      @KBuser1992 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seansutherland6270 Have your pedals improved? I can't speak for Mr. Van Dijk but I will say that with much practice, I am able to play usable pedals down to E below the staff on a tenor or bass. It takes a lot of time, effort and AIR (but a slow, steady stream). Relax your embouchure, diaphragm and lungs and give it a go. Good luck!
