Personally, I think “You’re the Guinea Pig” is one of the scariest PSAs out there. The lighting, the sudden movements the test subject makes, and the weirdly calm music all perfectly ties in together to create a very scary PSA.

To me the scariest PSAs are the ones with real victims(like Jacqueline and the real cost ones) because none of it is faked

I know a lot of people find My Little Puppy over the top, but I think it's a great PSA. It shows a puppy being a puppy and the consequences brought upon it just because the parents didn't do research and wasn't prepared to properly take care of a dog. The original ending with the drowning is a visual of how people who abandon dog are basically killing the dog themselves.
Dogs are a lot more responsibility than people think

I would say the “scariest” psa are the ones where the subject is taking to you and ask for your interaction, like “Hand” at 6:10 or “Face of a Comatose”. It feels as though they’re watching you.

LOL the snake man still scares me but I think a lot of that is nostalgia based since that PSA was on all the time when I was a kid. The scariest PSA for me recently was the MS one because my neuro thought I had MS and just the thought of actually having the thing that locks you in your body like that.... Even though I've now been cleared after testing and don't have it, that idea is still absolutely terrifying. That PSA does an excellent job of portraying a feeling of helplessness with the visuals and acting. Gonna agree with you on "Yes Mom" too. That is a brilliant example of acting and framing and there's a true sense of dread the first time you see it and realize exactly what's happening.

To me the scariest one is the British chip pan fire lady

A psa that is "scary" to me would have to be the jaqouline one. It doesn't really scare me or anything it just makes me a little sad. Just knowing what happened to her and thinking about scares ne because it's a thing that happens to people and it has happened to someone. It's also a little sad because she had a great life ahead of her almost having a scholarship before the accident I'm pretty sure. I watch the opera episode with her and when she met the mother of the guy who caused her accident. It was so sad but wholesome when she forgave her. That's why I feel a little frightened and sad when I see this psa.

The scariest part of "Polaroid" is the "morbid gaze", that is, being watched by a person in an abnormal state, such as a dead person (like "Summer Holiday" by RTA and "Eyes" by COI), a person with an abnormal mental state(like "Polaroid" and Norway Devil), and a person with an abnormal appearance(like snake man or Natural Smoker). It's like 'fast food' in the horror genre, simple, fast, and it works for some people. But for others, it's undeniably boring and lazy.
The biggest problem with "Polaroid" is that it only has "morbid gaze" and nothing else. For the viewer, it's either very scary or not scary at all, depending on whether you can accept the "morbid gaze".

Yes Mum isn’t scary, but just effective as we see the main character Andrew die while calling his mother as his car was drowning under the water.

The scariest PSAs to me are the ones that are the most realistic and the most effective. One that comes to mind is this one from PFDFA where they show this kid falling over and becoming unresponsive from sniffing inhalants; all of it being shown as a 240p resolution video, as if taken off of someone's cell phone. (That last thing probably isn't intentional, but it kinda adds to it for me.)

I agree with your points, but I think there’s one aspect that also needs mention, in addition to visuals-sound effects. For example, “Scavengers,” I know you’ve said before you don’t consider it scary, and I didn’t either until I heard it on headphones. That sound when the carcass is revealed struck down to the marrow. There are so many other PSAs that are made so much more chilling by the sounds they choose to use.

    • @pipercub6604
      @pipercub6604 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Agreed, some other PSAs that use sound well are Ventriloquist (NSPCC), Sign Language (SIRE), and Cruise (RSPCA). However, there are some silent PSAs that are scary. For example, Girl Child (Prayas Foundation) and Black (Fire Kills).

I’ve rarely seen RSPCA’s Cruise brought up in discussion before - it truly is one of the most disturbing PSAs to come out of Australia.

A shame it didn't cover a few more PSAs, but it's still a great video! I would say that TAC, NSPCC, SIRE, COI, Fire Kills, and Partnership for a Drug Free Singapore use the scare factor very well!

🤔All those 70’s to 90s UK PIFs which were made by a team of recent film school grads who had a penchant for horror?

My opinion on the tentacle psa is actually a great idea for an excellent example for chíłd Abüśe and in my opinion of the “shame on you” PSA is kinda crazy but a meme like you said in the video and the Hèr0in one is also creepy too( again just my opinion )

I'm honestly surprised you didn't mention Photograph as an example of a "not-scary" PSA, since you've mentioned a lot of times before that you don't view it as scary. Although, maybe I should thank you for not mentioning it again since I (and many other people) DO find it scary 😂 😂

Do you have the animated one where a boy asked a girl to do it and the girl’s heart and brain argue over want to do until the girl says “I want to wait.”

It’s called “Hand” by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, but on TH-cam, it’s “Don’t Drive Drugged”. I would say it’s more “haunting” because the guy is talking straight to you, the viewer. It feels as though they’re watching you.
