There was nothing worse than starting a game of CIV 1 and finding your neighbors were the Zulus and Russians. Progress be damned, start building units and don't stop until you have killed them both off.

I've been playing this game for a while, and I've always selected Romans. I didn't realise it was possible to meet them, if you ware another civ and hear the theme song. Also, I didn't know that the music in the game during advancements was the theme song itself, that you would otherwise hear during leader meeting. I recently played Chinese for the first time, and I got a tech, and was like "Holy shit! The music is different!".
I found this game a while ago browsing abandonware games. It's surprisingly addicting. I come back to this video now and again bc I'm autistic and the sound blaster version of the soundtrack scratches the right itch in my brain. It's all like womp womp womp or something. The India theme especially is great.
I started playing Civilization with the third game, but all of this music is essentially the same, so it is still very nostalgic to me. I wonder how much more so for people who began playing with this one!
The roland MT-32 was definitely top of the line for its time, but the hefty $550 price on it back then kept me from ever having one. Sound Blaster is the way I'll always remember the game. I have Munt too and use it for certain games when I go back and play them.
Still one of my favourite games. The Roman theme was the best, it's just so grand and....orderly. Going to war with the Zulus would always scare the crap out of me since they'd always have all of Africa and seemingly endless armies, Shaka's face would get so pissed and the war drums would start beating, always sent a chill down my spine. Cancel the library we need musketmen! lol
A good computer game back in the days growing up as a youth in my teens. I remember many of the following mlodi signatures. Greetings from Christian Svensson, Sweden. 🙂
So soundblaster music's actually SUPPOSED to be glitchy farty and muted in places. I've wondered if there's an issue with either soundcard or stereo speakers since my childhood in mid 90's. We spend hours (years actually) playing these classic DOS games with my older brother.
There's a bug (which this video suffers from too) that makes stereo information not play properly on newer SoundBlaster cards: th-cam.com/video/NgaB6z_fnO4/w-d-xo.html&lc=Ugx6BiHeSYCv84qMi5l4AaABAg.9GeXsxDxP1n9Ks3q_TjWj7
@sheik404 lololol, I love the way you put that. "Cancel the library we need musketmen!". I actually have not played Civ1 but I've been playing a lot of Civ3 lately and I know how that feeling goes! My most recent game (still ongoing) has gotten really rough, cancel the universities we need TANKS!
No, their race represent form of government their leader is using (all of pictures are mongols here means every civ use despotism) (however greeks would mean democracy, romans - republic, etc) Their number represent size of their country (1-4 small, medium, large, huge)
this brings back memories.... this is the first game i ever played. learned a great deal of English too. anyone know the name of the soviet theme? they are my favorites
Is it possible to have the original amiga 1200 sounds in DOS version? This game is much better than the new ones including civ II. BTW, there's also a CIV version where the civilization's colours are different (eg the Greeks/English in green, the Russian/Roman in orange) and although the map and the units have better details I prefer the older look of this game.
The Aztec Sound was recylcled in Colonization =) I am not sure, but could it be that the Amiga Music was very much better? And i can't remember : Was the Leader-Song the same as the City-Invade-Song? On Amiga surely coz the Disk-Mem was rare factor, dont think that 2 Songs got space. So I am now very confused: If Play Germany or met Fridericus Rex I hear Mozart's Turkish March.
This is emulator generated, right? It seems to me that part of the original Sound Blaster sounds are not reproduced, e.g. in the American theme. I have the same issue with Dosbox emulating Sound Blaster.
tl;dr version: To get the sound working right, set the "sbtype" setting in DOSBox to "sbpro1". --- You are quite right. The same problem with sounds missing exists in practically all TH-cam videos of this game. The cause of the problem is that DOSBox by default emulates a Sound Blaster 16, a card that uses the Yamaha OPL3 chip for music. SB16 did not exist when the game came out in late 1991; the newest card at the time was the Sound Blaster Pro 1, a card that instead uses two OPL2 chips for stereo. A more technical explanation: the game tries to play stereo music by sending commands that are supposed to play on the left channel to port 220h (the first OPL2 chip), and sounds that are supposed to play on the right to port 222h (the second OPL2 chip). This doesn't work right on an OPL3 card like SB16, the sounds that get sent to port 222h simply don't get played. The same problem exists in a few other games from around that time, notably Ultima Underworld 1.
Hahaha :) I really like this attitude :) Are you from Scotland or from Wales, maybe? I used to build an empire that developped its nuclear weapons as soon as possible and to score a record of explosions. I think I once launched about 250 nuclear warheads during my career :) And the permanent newspaper's messages about the climate change were really annoying. Please note that I'm just kidding about a computer game and it was just about fun, nuclear weapons were a terrible invention of mankind.
The music was all made for civ 1, then they just recycled the music until civ 4 then won a grammy for the new music. Weird the civ guys were so reluctant to make new music (apart from for Civ 2 test of time, which has terrible music) when they were so good at it.
In terms of music, in this game (and many others of that time), Sound Blaster sucks compared to Roland MT-32. You really should download Munt if you didn't already.
Played this game as a kid for YEARS. As an adult, I find it kind of messed up China has Mao and Russia has Stalin. By that logic, Germany should have Hitler. Why stop at just 2 of the most evil leaders in world history, when you could have 3? Oh, what you could get away with in the 80's....
When I was a kid, I thought Stalin was Saddam Hussein and it confused me why an Iraqi would lead Russians.
Remember that Kurdish general, Hossein Yazdanpanah? He actually modelled his look after Stalin.
I wonder if Saddam did the same...
When I was a kid, I thought Stalin was Stalin and it confused me why a Georgian would lead Russians.
Saddam's hair is less grey
@@vergildisparda When I was a kid, I thought Napoleon was Napoleon and it confused me why a Corsican would lead French.

I once let them fend for themselves. darn
Nah, gotta give a shoutout to the Mongols, too.
I never played as Zulu because I loved Shaka’s theme and general vibe. Pity I had to destroy them.

ElAurian lol I thought American's theme was "I've been working on the railroad" song.
The theme for Rome is not "Rise of Rome", it is "Augustus Rises".

I still spontaneously sing the Greek and Russian melodies when I'm underneath the shower... I played this game when I was 6... now I'm 27...
Yes I do the same lol

Egyptian, Greek, Roman.
