I hated dental school and I wasn't really interested in the studying part of it, I just wanted the degree to make my family happy. I always thought that I will not work as a dentalhygienist!! But now 2 years in and I am seriously loving it amd I never thought I would be good at this job. It's so much fun, specially considering that I work with children(I'm in the public sector and dental care for kids up to 18yrs is free here). So to all the students; keep working hard, it's fun and rewarding to be a dh.

I am a single momma reaching my 40's soon (yikes!); however, I am hopeful to get into the dental hygiene program. My work experience has been in business administration, then I had a baby and chose to stay home to raise my child while I assisted my husband in building a small business. He passed away 2yr ago to an aggressive cancer leaving me with a broken heart. Grieving process has been a tough, tough road. After 2 years of my husband's death I am ready to take the necessary steps forward that are needed for my child and I. Shadowing my dental hygienist has been exciting and I can happily state that I found a career I will really enjoy. I'm in the process of applying: praying that I get in. Fingers crossed Tajah and all best wishes to all of you that are applying as well. :) Thank you for your videos! I like learning from your experience.

sarah reyes they do but with today's generation it's a lot different than before. I'm not a dentist but I work as a dental assistant going for dental hygiene. My dentist is a very good friend of mine and he said all his dentist friends and including him are in debt anywhere from 400k-700k! That takes like 10 years to pay it off. There's a lot of factors even dentist who make a lot of money don't get to profit until a very long time.

Been doing my research for the past few weeks, and so far I am indeed interested. I’ve also realized there’s an extremely small percentage of males in the field of study and my friend and I (both males) are going in together. He’s already started and I’ve just made up my mind on a career having almost being finished with getting my associates in business. I’ve always had a passion for dental Hygiene and teeth. Charlize Salazar Dental Assisting is less routine and gives you more variety as far as procedures and day to day task hygiene can be repetitive but your more independent and disease prevention and maintenance is very important to me which is why I personally decided to go for both to have the best of both worlds some accredited DA programs take 1 academic year and usually don’t run over 8,000 if you can find that or better yet shadow in a dental office you’ll find out which one best suits you☺️
You should definitely go for it love ! After DA school you will know so much and that’ll get you points for the program too ! Wish you the best 😘😘

Hi personally I paid almost 3k in California for a radiation safety class and internship for DA. In CA you don’t have to be registered and can get hired as a DA instead of RDA. This is a low cost, and shorter option to get employment in a dental office and experience while completing my pre reqs and some RDH schools in CA give u extra points if you have assisted before. But California can be a completely different world sometimes

Scarier than nursing school?
What do I have to do prior to dental hygien school? Is it college then 2 years? Or can I just go straight to dental hygien school because I thought it was a technical job
I always wanted to be a RDH but instead I went to for Business Administration now that I'm 27 I really want to go back to school but I'm scared that I'm not smart enough like I was 10 years ago.
A lot of the class ahead of me were moms in their late 20's and 30's who buckled down and wanted more! If you want it, and work hard for it, you can do it!

I got into the Dental Hygiene program for this past Septembers start date! Unfortunately, it was cancelled because of covid and i'm not guarenteed a spot for next year:( I truly hope i get in again. for now, i'm doing pre-health science! you're so inspiring, thank you for sharing so much with us

Glad to see a video like this , am a dental assistant currently in school for dental hygiene still taking my prerequisites and every one plus the advisers keep saying the program is very competitive to get into . One adviser even told me her niece has been tryna get in to the program for 4 years now . But am not giving up, am different and I know am gonna achieve my goal .

Great that you are sharing. Not all schools require the same things. Some don't require a test before, some may pick a few to interview and some require you shadow a hygienist before applying. You will need a board patient so I would recommend you try getting a job assisting in order to look out for a board patient. Also, stay focused on the recommendations given when doing the national board.

MCPHS University you receive a Bachelors degree in 3 years, including prerequisites AND clinicals. You only need to receive a C average to meet the minimum grade requirements to get into the DH program. All prerequisites are completed in first year, and year 2 and year 3 are all clinicals. The school has over an 80% acceptance rate, however, this school is EXTREMELY expensive. Overall, it is a REALLY GOOD school. This program is non-competitive like other DH schools, and it takes less time than other schools to recive your diploma. There is also a master's degree available for bachelor degree graduates.

But yeah I'm currently in a dental assistant program to prepare me for dental hygiene program(plus I have to move since there's only 1 dental hygiene program in Montana-ugh) but I'm so excited to start my journey into the dental field. I've already been in the healthcare field for about 2 years, as a personal care assistant so I'm hoping that will make for a smoother transition
Before I applied for the dental hygiene program at my school I also looked through TH-cam for information about the application process and what the classes would look like. I couldn’t find anything! Now I am half way through the program which only accepts 18 people per year with over 200 applicants. 2 have dropped out so now we have 16. You are right, it is very competitive and challenging. Please do a part 2! I finished my first semester with all A's! I just started second semester, and girl now I am just aiming to pass lol. How was your clinic? We are expected to call and schedule most of our own patients, and I am freaking out. I am not liking the system they use for our clinic. Our patients have to be scheduled for 2-3 appointments at 2 1/2 hours per appointment before we "complete" them. Like who wants to do that or has time?
Ashley Renee Z. Lol your program is very similar to mine when I was in school! We had paying patients but if they cancelled then we were responsible to find our own ! And yes depending on the calculus class we would have to break up the appointments but the real world is so much different! Congrats on making it through your 1st semester the hard work is all worth it ! And yes I am working on Part 2 and I will break the whole program down lol ! Don’t give yo girl we all tried to survive and took it day by day when I was in school ! Xoxo

Congrats girly you got this ! I remember how scary clinic was but you just have to be focused and get it done ! Don’t focus on excuses or feel sorry for yourself when patients cancel, just be proactive and find your next pt ! You got this ! Best of luck :D

So I pretty much feel like I wasted my life going to community college and not utilizing some kind of trade or program that gets offered at community colleges. All I have is my associates degree because I was so unsure what I wanted to do with my life and needed guidance. Please someone let me know what can I do to become a dental hygienist without community college
Brandnamedbecca were in the same boat. i just figured i wanted to be a hygienist so now i’m retaking classes and still taking prerequisites . i’m at a technical school now . but i advise you to talk to an advisor at whatever college you want to attend

I'm a DA taking my pre recs right now I'd like part 2 , I love being in the dental field and why not get paid more for doing most of what hyg do anyways.
Do you have to take the SAT/ACT test before you enter the program if you didn’t take the tests yet while in high school? (I’m homeschooled)
ਕੁੱਤਾ you do not have to take the sat act if you're going to apply to the program thru community college, but you will have to take placement test just to see what's your level in English math and science although you will have to take some classes as pre requisites to enter the program hope this helps

I was just wondering what kind of jobs should I be applying for before I even go to college, or does it not matter? Haha girl I feel you. I’m in first year dent and we had thousands of people apply but only 126 places and our cohort is already larger than the year above us.
If you’re gonna become a dental hygienist move to Washington they make 116,000 a year!!

I have been a dental hygienist since 2009. I like the pay however it gets boring! I am now in nursing school which is better. Be careful because practicing hygiene kills your back and will give you carpal tunnel! Besides all, it is a good pay career. I am now using it to pay for nursing school.
