Along those same lines I heard that Michael Jackson was so impressed with their cover that he laughed and said "I think you did it better than I did"! What a compliment! They deserved it though this is one of the best covers I've ever heard of any song. You should also check out "movies" and "these days" also great!

The bit with the car comes from a much later video for his song "Black or White" and was quite a gear shift at the time for him.

I read somewhere, but have not personally verified, that the kid dancing was not planned as part of the video. He was there watching the filming and started dancing, and the producer was amazed and wanted to use him in the video. The problem was that his parents were not there, so they could not get permission. So, they put him in the mask to get around that impasse.

That's not true. His name is Bobby Edner, and he was hired for the video. At age 12 he was a professional dancer with acting experience. They had him wear the mask as a reference to MJ who would often wear a mask in public, but if you look, there's also a version of the video where he isn't wearing the mask. Search for "Alien Ant Farm - "Smooth Criminal" (2001) | Mask-less version"

Everyone gets the car part wrong, I'm almost positive it was the extended version of Black or White. I remember recording it off mtv when they announced they were pulling it because of complaints.
