This happened to my father. Someone who had never had anxiety in his life , was diagnosed with anxiety. When an actual fact he had a build up of blood around his lungs. It took a number of weeks, before the doctors finally got the right diagnosis. Meanwhile my father suffered a great deal.

14 years ago I was misdiagnosed with a DVT for 6 weeks as the doctor said I'm too young (i was 37) and not overweight so it can't be a DVT. So i took myself off to A&E where they gave me a scan revealing a DVT, the hospital said i had days to live as it had spread. Thankfully straight onto warfarin which saved my life. My doctor couldn't believe it when he was informed by the hospital.

My 8 year old daughter was seriously ill a few months ago. I took her to the doctor 3 times and was seen by a paramedic. Every occasion was told she had a virus. Three weeks later she developed a rash that I was told was an allergic reaction. She hadn't left her bed and was barely eating at that point so I knew It wasn't that. I decided enough was enough and dragged her down A&E for a real doctor to find out what was wrong with her. She had a UTI. A UTI that had been left untreated for three weeks. The infection had started to go into her blood stream. She didn't have any symptoms of a UTI but I was told this is very common in young children and the elderly. I was severely annoyed that it hadn't been picked up sooner but maybe if I had seen a doctor in the first place it would have.

10 years ago I was diagnosed with anxiety and was told I was having panic attacks. I couldn’t breath properly without awful pains in my left rib cage for a week, no obvious cause. It really hurt to breath and talk at the same time. This turned out to be costochondritis. I was diagnosed with nr ankylosing spondylitis ten years later. This was one of the symptoms. Just to clarify, Physician Associates (PAs) do not claim to be doctors. In fact, it is part of our professional responsibility to clearly explain our role during each consultation, which I personally make sure to do. The confusion often arises from patients themselves, even after we've explained our role. Receptionists also play an important part in informing patients when they are booking appointments. Despite this, many patients continue to refer to me as a doctor, likely due to the nature of our work. Nevertheless, I appreciate their trust and willingness to return to see me. I can't speak for every Physician Associate but at our practice we need to explain our role at each opportunity.

@@jetmanchandi I agree with this, I work in a clinical setting and despite me explaining my role and reception stating my designation I find that many patients often still get this wrong. To be fair to patients part of this is that there are so many different designations these days that it's hard to keep track, even for someone like myself who works in the setting. I also think that generally most patients don't mind who they see unless they feel the consultation went badly/they didn't get good care and so perhaps the need to be clear on who they have seen is retrospective. I think it is our responsibility to introduce ourselves properly but I do not think it is our fault if patients leave consultations not knowing who we are. If the patient isn't sure then they should enquire.

5 years does not make them equivalent to doctors. The medical degree structure/exams are accountable to the GMC, and the profession is highly regulated. You just have to look at the statistics of how many PA students graduate with “distinction” and the ease of passing before putting them on equal footing. The requirements for entrance are also vastly different between medicine/PA (with respect, a large subset of PA students have been rejected from medicine as much as they dont admit it). @@elizabethdavis9119 I agree doctors misdiagnose and I don't agree with the assumption that if this girl had been reviewed by a doctor she definitely would have been diagnosed correctly. The learning point of this case though is that it has brought an issue to the surface that has been raised by many as a concern for years and largely ignored by the GMC/government up to this point which is regulation. Almost all professions-nurses, doctors, dentists have a regulatory body to whom they are accountable. This means that when errors are made it is clear whether or not somebody stepped beyond their area of expertise and/or made an error which they are likely to repeat/whether it impacts their overall ability to continue in the profession. If there is no regulatory body there are no clear standards which people need to meet and it then it becomes very difficult to say whether somebody stepped beyond their role as this is not clearly defined. PAs overall are actually being let down by the lack of a regulatory body. Also please do not advise people to seek an alternative opinion in ED unless you truly feel it is an emergency or you have sought more than one opinion from your GP practice/out of hours service. I have worked both in the community and the emergency setting. Non-emergency presentations to ED and overcrowding in ED is extremely dangerous and a second opinion can be obtained from any clinician in any setting.

The government are not funding GP training places for qualified medical doctors who have already completed 2 years of hospital based work on top of their medical degree - but instead funding PAs to enter into field they should not be, and are certainly not qualified to enter. Why do PAs even exist/need funding when they need supervision? Why cant the government just use the money they fund PAs with - to actually increase training places for GPs and at The end you get an ACTUAL doctor treating the public. This will all end badly.

I believe GP practices are run as a business, so they control what the money is spent on. In 2012 the BMA voted to restrict training places, their reason we are told, because the jobs weren’t there for them when they qualify. If you read the minutes of the meeting it does say doctors would be able to demand higher wages as there would be a limited supply! ( words to that effect) .Now of course they want to increase training places as a lot of GP’s & doctors only work part time so this means more are needed to do take up some of the workload. Obviously a practice would not be able to afford many doctors as the wages are very generous hence why the PA’s & nurses are used more. Does a normal business get funding from the government?

@@elizabethdavis9119 It’s unfortunate you have a lack of understanding about how the NHS is run, and use this to justify why PAs are allowed to treat the public. Just to educate you - the way you produce a qualified GP is through placing a fully qualified doctor with two years of hospital training, through a further 3 years NHS-training programme called “General Practice”, these doctors are called GP registrars who then after 3 years qualify as GPs. The number of NHS-training programmes (and other specialities such as surgery, hospital medicine etc) have systematically been reduced by the government - these doctors pay does NOT come from the GP practice itself, but from the NHS (and the pay dictated by the government). Please look at NHS speciality competition ratios to see the number of doctors avaliable to apply for these posts, and the number of training posts avaliable (there are more doctors than posts avaliable). If the government have slashed training posts avaliable to produce qualified GPs/Consultants - and use this funding instead to fund PAs (who are not medical doctors) because they are essentially quick buck, on the cheap access to healthcare for members of public who cant afford private care (where you are guaranteed a fully qualified GP/consultant) - you as a member of the general public should be concerned? Why are you as a tax paying member of the public, subject to non-doctors treating you - when there is money in the government that could be used to just train fully qualified doctors as GPs and improve the workforce? It is so sad to see members of the public falling for this, and I guarantee no politician is using a PA to look after their family/their own health

@@elizabethdavis9119 In regards to what you said about the BMA. You are incorrect, and it is shame again you are justifying the use of non-doctors to treat yourself/family members. Doctors have continuied, for so long to put pressure on the government to improve funding to increase speciality training posts (this is how you produce GPs/Medical Consultants/Surgical Consultants). What a sad state of affairs this country is in, that we are even having this discussion about people without medical degrees treating our family members. Would you allow a non-pilot who has not gone through rigorous pilot school training to fly a plane with yourself/your children in it? No? So why is medicine/healthcare any different.

My problem comes from my own experiences with GP’s & hospital doctors. We nearly lost our 13 year old grandson due to the arrogance of a couple of doctors who diagnosed him with Covid when in fact he had a perforated appendix. It was a PA that sent him to hospital with appendicitis which was ignored. A couple of friends have been mis diagnosed, again by doctors not PA’s, one is dead and two others are classed as terminal. So perhaps you will forgive my lack of confidence in doctors. I have learnt to use good old dr Google (as our GP does) & TH-cam again as Dr’s do. I am hoping you are one of the better ones. 🤞
