this Disney movie was made somewhere between the "New" Disney and Their Animation boom,so like a lot of rather good Live-action's at the time(*Mary Poppins,Herbie the Lovebug,Escape to Witch Mountain, etc*.),this one just flew under the radar...
@Thread Bomb(awesome screen name, btw) -- Not in the slightest. But when i say "New Disney", they don't immediately spring to mind right away do they? That's what i meant by "flew under the radar". As much as i loved Disney's animation at the time(The Great Mouse Detective being my favorite from that era), i honestly think they had a better Live-action division. It's just sad to me that people seemed to've willingly forgot 'bout this Era of Disney Movies....
Not really sure I understand why you think Nazis getting their asses handed to them by animated museum pieces would make people uncomfortable in a kids movie... I mean, they are Nazis, we know they are the bad guys, we aren't supposed to be rooting for them, we don't need to see them being vicious murderers to know that. Yeah, its Hogan's Heroes slapstick type stuff, but is that really a problem? The movie doesn't try and make them appear sympathetic at any point that I can remember.
I guess it's more of a problem with making nazis seem like villains in a saturday morning cartoon show rather than the actual bastards they actually were. While I don't personally think that's a terrible thing, I really do see why some people would.
So, making real life villains into cartoon villains is wrong? I don't get it, they are the bad guys, period. I guess the people putting pictures of rubber ducks over ISIS images is wrong too? Because then they look like buffoons, and we wouldn't want or enemies to look stupid would we?
+Jake Petrie Actually, the German Version has the Nazi referrences removed. They even filmed a whole different scene for that. In the Original, they could not get the Star from the Island of Naboo, but the Kid found the inscription in his comic after a Broadcast of the Nazis attacking. In the German version they kept the Star and read the inscription from that, with the Broadcast scene removed. Some songs were removed as well.
+maximumrisk2004 Aww really? I liked the comic bit. Its like "the kid has a book that describes everything in the world. Why didnt you ask him if he knew what the inscription was? +digitivortex and yet they showed "Hogan's Heroes" in syndication for years, even added a new character (talked about and never seen) named Helga who was supposed to be Klink's lover.
+digitivortex Like in "The Simpsons" when they went to Germany and were on a historical tour and it was glossing over all the Nazi stuff. At one point the tour guide claimed everyone was on vacation and had nothing to do with the war? :)
I'm of the mindset that portraying Nazis this way is more to due with how they've become a universally-acceptable target as punching bags and guiltlessly-killable mooks. We're so over Nazis that it's okay to mock them, despite the impact they had, like how we can make fun of other historical figures.
and ironicaly, these nazis were not portrayed as over-the-top sadistic schmucks with the evil laugh, boasting and such, they just invaded the shore to stablish a base and went with it as serious and realistic as possible.
I love this. I prefer it to Mary Poppins. For what it's worth: The Germans are not referred to as Nazi's - only things like 'Jerries', etc. The references are strictly to German's, Germany, and the war - not ideologies. At the time this was made (and afterwards) many many children played with toy soldiers that would be 'nation' based without any reference to different ideologies. So, in a less sensitive time, German's as the bad guys was nothing unusual.
"Depending on your sensitivity to the whole Nazi thing..." It's set in England during WWII. They lived through rationing, nightly bombing raids and the imminent threat of invasion by Nazi Germany. If they didn't complain about sensitivity (and why would they since they're portrayed as heroes valiantly fighting off a powerful enemy), then neither you nor anyone else has any right to.

Wonderful movie, great actors, and awesome music. The actor who played the German commander was even played by a legit German (and an actor who eventually got a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame for his TV work). BTW, the kids weren't sent to the countryside because "the men" were off at war. The women could've theoretically led a household like they did in the states. I saw this a tender age youth in Kelvington Saskatchewan... It was the original theatric release... Damn, those were the good old days... And no I'm NOT CRYING. I have a stuffed up nose...
I have the extended version and I think it's actually quite good. As NC said, the Portobello Road scene does drag on for a long time, but that doesn't really bother me. The biggest problem is that some of the scenes no longer had the sound and they had to rerecord a lot of the dialogue. Seeing as a lot of the actors are dead now, they didn't have the original voices, and it stands out a lot!
I have the VHS and watching that, as well as online, I've found several lines spoken, specifically from Charlie and Paul, that seem to sound very different from their normal voices so that would explain it.
Are you sure the ending with the Nazis is suppose to be funny, cause I always saw it as scary. The bodiless suits of armor, the dark, misty environment, the what-I-think-is-a Gregorian chant. Seems like they were doing more than be a minor nuisance, they were trying to mentally scar the Nazis, which would be rather helpful to the British and their allies against the Germans. It also portrays the Nazis as cowards and mocks them. Why would this be a bad thing?
I saw it as a kid in theaters and last year I watched the DVD version and I knew that Portabello Road segment was way longer than I remembered and other parts I didn't remember. I just thought I didn't remembered it as well as I thought. Thank you Dough for telling me I'm not crazy, well not crazier than I normally am.
Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson chemistry, Portovello road, the animal island, the climax and the old guard song, this film was my favourite as a child, I liked so much i didn't care of watching Mary Poppins until I was like ten or eleven (I still loved).
2:40 Ok I have actually NEVER seen this film, not that I intentionally haven't, just never got round to it. This costume effect, in the context, is freakin' hilarious, that actor is just walking along but his top half has to look like "wtf?" because his character's fake legs are meant to be the real ones, as he's kind of transported by the ghost knight trousers like one is stuck in a waste bin! Had I known that visual was coming, I wouldn't have sipped my tea!
Doug, based on your review, I actually have good news for you... and anyone who agrees with him. I was looking around and doing research on this movie, and a couple of years ago, they finally released it on blu-ray. The blu-ray release is presented in its original 117 minute theatrical release. All the additional content added to the reconstructed special edition is still there, but it exists in a separate "deleted scenes" feature
I own the DVD that has the Extended Version, but honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of the extended cut. It would be cool if I could watch the original cut.
Being offended by this, just like being offended by Hogan's Heroes, is a bit stupid. HH aired in '65 and Bedknobs and Broomsticks was released in '71, 20 and 26 years after the end of WWII respectively, with memories of WWII still in many people's minds, and both had people involved who had fought in WWII, with HH's German actors even being German Jews who fled from Nazi Germany. If they're okay with starring in something like this, then you can be okay with watching it.
Is Mel Brooks making fun of Nazis more acceptable because he's Jewish? Springtime For Hitler in The Producers comes to mind. That was hilarious! Indiana Jones fought Nazis too. They are ready made bad guys (and comedy scapegoats) for a lot of good films.
Another classic I get a little sad about when I tell people about it, but they have no idea what I'm talking about. I love this film. It's so fun and imaginative. Like Mary Poppins, the songs tend to stick out the most as being the most memorable moments of the film. "Age of not believing" (or whatever it's actually called) is the song that sticks out the most in my mind and always tends to pop in every once in awhile when I least expect it. :P
I freaking LOVE the living armor march scene, it sends the hairs on the back of my neck on end as they march and start chanting the spell. To me, that was the climax of the movie xD
@@MrGabeanator The point is that the last half of the movie involved Maria, Captain Von Trapp, and their seven kids fleeing from the Nazis who have invaded Salzburg and, I might add, enlisted Von Trapp to join them before then.
I have this movie on DVD and it is one of my all time favourite Disney movies! The songs are fun, the visuals a really cool and the fight at the end is so cool. Especially that the end scene is much like The Battle of Hastings which is AWESOME
I think I grew up with the extended cut. We had the DVD and it had the dance party, Mr. Brown's song and Mrs. Price's song. I never really minded those scenes much (except Mrs. Price's song) and I didn't know there was a difference.
No way. Extended version is really good!! You can always fast forward through stuff you think is too long or boring but you can never put things back into a movie once theyre edited out. I also argue that the extended cut is clearer to understand the characters motivations more and I buy the romance more at the end. Definitely watch the extended and just skip around if you dont like a scene.
Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks both have David Tomlinson, Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang both have Dick van Dyke, and Mary Poppins and Sound of Music both have Julie Andrews. That’s why.
I always found it odd that Doug said he wished the Harry Potter films had more comedy regarding magic in them. I mean, magic is a normal thing to them in the Harry Potter universe so wouldn't that be like laughing at a guy using a motorised scooter for comedic effect? It's funny in this film because magic isn't the norm, it is strange and supposed to be absolutely weird.
+AHylianWarrior You can make jokes about mundane things. The entire franchise needed more humour in general, I mean it's just ridiculous to see grown men spewing gibberish with dramatic music on the bg...
Well to be fair when the director was changed by the third film, there was more humour stuck in there. The director of the first two seemed to concentrate more on drama.
The view of Big Ben during the transportation always scared me, it looks like a skull. Also, the executioner armor scared me. And the chanting of the spell by the reanimated army still gives me chills.
This is my favorite Disney movie of all of the live action ones ever made. :) It will always hold a special place in my heart and I go out of my way to make sure ALL of my friends who haven't seen it, get to see it. And I've yet to get a single complaint, everyone's loved it. lol
I just rewatched this because my sister found a $1 VHS at a thrift store (and we still have a VHS at my parent's house) and yeah, watch the original cut. I remember seeing the extended version as a kid and getting VERY bored. But the original is still cute and charming to me as an adult
Such an underrated Disney movie. I've loved it since I was little! When the bed flies for the first time, I still like to turn off the lights and just watch the colors fly all over the room.
What should've been noted is that the film's marketing shows the main characters with the animals. yet that doesn't happen until halfway and it only lasts for like 1/10th of the whole film. this film is much like Dumbo and Wreck-It Ralph; the marketing shows one particular segment (showing Dumbo flying and Ralph in the same room as Bowser, M Bison, Robotnik and all the other well known video game villains) yet those scenes only last for only a small amount of time.
ZooTycoonLord I too was bothered by the misleading marketing of Bedknobs and Broomsticks when I first saw it as a kid, as I kept waiting for that section impatiently. Another movie with deceiving marketing that I saw around the same time was Fun and Fancy Free, although I do have a soft spot for that movie.
True, though the villain scene in Wreck-It Ralph and even Dumbo's flying are pitiful in terms of screentime compared to the animated worlds in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. The previously mentioned two scenes only lasted maybe like 5 minutes or less. Whereas Bedknobs and Broomstick had their marketed scenes last more than 15 minutes. So it really leaves an impression.
"Bedknobs & Broomsticks" is a fantastic magical adventure. It's more similar like "Mary Poppins" with the same set, same characters, and the same Sherman Brothers lovable songs, but it's a lot of fun, very musical, very cartoony, and fucking hilarious with the animation scene and the Nazi battle scene with the incredible knights walking in the shadows and sang that cool song. I would say that Doug was right that the original cut stays it perfect and other special cut is pretty long. I have the VHS and I remember watching it because it was quick and takes a break. In this version is too long and probably the director or creators want to fit the story and it probably don't need it. More like "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" where the director's cut is replace more needed scenes than the theatrical cut. Thank god I got on Blu-Ray and two versions is still here that I prefer the original than special. Anyways, amazing movie. Hilarious.
Wonderful and severely underrated Disney movie! It's surprising how many people have never heard of it. The special effects on the armor still look great.
To me, this is better than Mary Poppins. Yes that was a beautiful film but for some reason I always forget it's inbetween scenes, where as Bedknobs and Broomsticks I remember every scene. Best part for me as a kid and still is the armor coming to life scene since its funny but also kinda haunting in a Black Cauldron way.
I just saw the stage version last night and they have absolutely smashed it! It’s cast perfectly, the songs are adjusted but improved upon, the kids can act and then some, the leads were outstanding! Favourite parts were portobello road and the Eglantine song just brilliant! If it’s ever in your area guys go see it!
It's the strangest thing: I remember watching this movie when I was really little, 5 or 6 maybe, with my then best friend. I saw it shortly after I had seen Mary Poppins for the first time and I do remember being confused as to why some of the same actors were in this but not Mary herself :) Awesome to be finally able to put a name to the memory.
This was a great movie,it has a great cast great music, special effects and a great story, sometimes I wished I had been in it.a great classic movie with a great tallented cast
I have a head cannon that Bedknobs and Broomstricks is a sequel to Mary Poppins, with Michel eventually going by the stage name of Emilius Brown. (It’s nice to think about, and this is better than the ACTUAL sequel to Mary Poppins)
I could not agree more. Straight down to how much the 25th anniversary edition drags down the pace by comparison to the original. I as a kid never even thought about the Nazism. To me there were just a generic invading force and a war. It set the tone and the timeline and that was about it.
this movie is my all time favourite Disney film and I have the extended VHS tape of it and it's in great condition and I watch it every now and then and it never gets old for me heck even the jokes keep me laughing and my favourite part is the funny climax the chant is awesome the fight is funny and awesome I just love Bedknobs And Broomsticks
This was my favorite movie as a kid and I still love it. I do prefer the extended version to the original, purely because of the longer version of the duet between Miss Price and Professor Brown, but each to their own ;) David Tomlinson has to be one of my favorite actors though
So...a Disney film is about obtaining a spell that can end WW2? Hitler had no chance unless he partnered up with Res Putin or however you spell his name! (also known as the villian from Anastasia)
OLD video, but i loved this movie as a kid, and the battle scene with the Nazi army was my fav. I was a bit of armor and weapon buff as a kid so seeing all that old armor and weapons in action against what was modern tech was a fun watch. the magic wasn't in your face, more like a "just happen to know it" .
As a kid I absolutely loved the knight attack, it was what I used to picture the dead warriors in The Lord Of The Rings to look like when I read the books as a kid lol 😂
Kids weren't sent to the country cus their dads were off to war. most were just sent there to be kept safe from the bombs being dropped on London, hence being evacuees. makes it more heartbreaking because many left their parents in a dangerous situation, and many parents had to send their kids away themselves
I always thought the boys have haircuts that are too 1960s when it is supposed to be the 1940s. It being made in 1968 ought not to matter, as the filmmakers were attentive to other details. Still remember this fondly, though.
One of my favourite movies. Love this one. Love the whole mystery with the Magical Island that they think is a myth and the Star of Astaroth. Love Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson. Definitely some great laughs in it. My sister and I will forever quote lines from it. I don't know why we like to say, "Aye biiirrrrdyy." Which the king says to his right hand bird at one point in the cartoon sequence. I completely agree about the extended cut versus the original version. I bought the 30th Anniversary Edition DVD and it was just the extended cut and yes Portobello Road goes on ForEVER. I love that song but it was just way too long in it's full version. I really think that cutting the song Eglantine down in the original version was a mistake though. I really like that number. Other than that yes I agree don't watch the extended one. I don't understand why the DVD didn't give the option to watch either version. And then maybe to view the missing scenes on their own. I guess the have the original version then the deleted scenes on the Blu-ray.
I honestly prefer the extended version. like theres soo many things they cut out like the werid side story with the vicker and the ending bit where mr brown joins the home guard. sure people think it goes on too long but i honestly think its better with theses bits in
To this day nobody believes me when I tell them about the Disney movie where the lady from Murder She Wrote used witchcraft to fight Nazis.

I own the DVD that has the Extended Version, but honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of the extended cut. It would be cool if I could watch the original cut.
I still have this movie on VHS, and it's the theatrical cut.
Good news, Doug. This film's on Blu-ray and it's the theatrical version. The extra scenes are special features.
7.6/10 "Like MaryPoppins but with swords."
THIS THIS THIS!
This was probably my favorite live action Disney movie as a kid. I still get songs from it stuck in my head today.
I freaking LOVE the living armor march scene, it sends the hairs on the back of my neck on end as they march and start chanting the spell. To me, that was the climax of the movie xD
For those of you complaining about the nazi's, ever saw the sound of music?
whats your point
@@MrGabeanator The point is that the last half of the movie involved Maria, Captain Von Trapp, and their seven kids fleeing from the Nazis who have invaded Salzburg and, I might add, enlisted Von Trapp to join them before then.
@@josephdannivitz1167 ok
Or Indiana Jones?
The sound of music has the excuse that it is based on a true story.
Loved this movie when I was little and am still fascinated by it 30 years later. The opening credits are the fantastic.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks is now being adapted into a stage musical at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre.
I have this movie on DVD and it is one of my all time favourite Disney movies! The songs are fun, the visuals a really cool and the fight at the end is so cool. Especially that the end scene is much like The Battle of Hastings which is AWESOME
This is still my all-time favorite musical.
I think I grew up with the extended cut. We had the DVD and it had the dance party, Mr. Brown's song and Mrs. Price's song. I never really minded those scenes much (except Mrs. Price's song) and I didn't know there was a difference.
My all time fave live action Disney film, every minute is spectacular, especially that awesome chant
Never heard of this movie until you mentioned it several years ago. Finally got the chance to see this underrated classic. Thank god for disney plus.
Was I the only one who thought Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Sound of Music all were in the same universe.
AHylianWarrior Yeah... still, Order of the Phoenix is indigestibly boring to me.
I'm coming in like 6 years late, but there is a fair deal more comedy in the books. Even in the more serious latter ones.
God. I'm 15 and I saw this movie as a kid. I forgot how much I love this movie. Now I want to watch it again.
Let's just hope that Disney NEVER EVER attempts a remake on this classic!!!
Agreed
They have in a way. And it was absolutely terrific. Bedknobs and broomsticks live! It was unbelievable!
So it really leaves an impression.
ah man this was one of my favourite movies as a kid. i still find myself rewatching it often. :)
Hilarious.
I hope I get it on Blu Ray, but please added theatrical cut than the special cut.
Wonderful and severely underrated Disney movie! It's surprising how many people have never heard of it. The special effects on the armor still look great.
Watching along, watching along
Watching along with the Critic with a fiiiiiiiiiiiiilm I love to see X3
+Minarus Infernus Loooove this movie!
This movie and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang were my childhood
MIne,too. The first releases were my childhood,too!..
My favourite childhood movie, my brother and I still quote it and want to visit the market in Portobello Rd.
This was a frequent viewed childhood favorite of mine! Thanks for the review and info.
3:42 RIP Sir Bruce Forsyth
This was a great movie,it has a great cast great music, special effects and a great story, sometimes I wished I had been in it.a great classic movie with a great tallented cast
I loved the climax. The spooky moving suits of armor are chilling and always got me amped as a kid.
I loved that damn climax , that chant still gives me chills !! 👍😀
I have a head cannon that Bedknobs and Broomstricks is a sequel to Mary Poppins, with Michel eventually going by the stage name of Emilius Brown. (It’s nice to think about, and this is better than the ACTUAL sequel to Mary Poppins)
The part with the armor coming to life and fighting the Nazi's is my favorite part of the movie!
I could not agree more. Straight down to how much the 25th anniversary edition drags down the pace by comparison to the original. I as a kid never even thought about the Nazism. To me there were just a generic invading force and a war. It set the tone and the timeline and that was about it.
this movie is my all time favourite Disney film and I have the extended VHS tape of it and it's in great condition and I watch it every now and then and it never gets old for me heck even the jokes keep me laughing and my favourite part is the funny climax the chant is awesome the fight is funny and awesome I just love Bedknobs And Broomsticks
im 17 an even i love this
I'm 30, and even I love this.
Thank you for all your videos makes my work day a little more bearable lol
One of my favorite movies as a kid.
Finally this movie gets the love and respect it deserves!
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid.
David Tomlinson is right up there with Keenan Wynn as most likable bad guy in movie history.
A lone Witch uses the power of Necromancy to raise an army of the undead to defend Great Britian from the Nazi invasion. I'm sold.
Can we all talk about that one knight with the axe though @6:57? Truly the most terrifying Disney character.
Thank you so much for this one !
As a kid I absolutely loved the knight attack, it was what I used to picture the dead warriors in The Lord Of The Rings to look like when I read the books as a kid lol 😂
It got it's own musical
I Love this movie on my top 20/10 Of all time. One of my childhood favourites
Kids weren't sent to the country cus their dads were off to war. most were just sent there to be kept safe from the bombs being dropped on London, hence being evacuees. makes it more heartbreaking because many left their parents in a dangerous situation, and many parents had to send their kids away themselves
5:50 And then there's more! What the hell!?
AND THEN THERE's MORE!
Loved this movie when was a child :)
This is my absolute favorite Disney movie.
I always thought that chant the armor was singing was scary!
I honestly prefer the extended version. like theres soo many things they cut out like the werid side story with the vicker and the ending bit where mr brown joins the home guard. sure people think it goes on too long but i honestly think its better with theses bits in
We love this film too! Hope to buy it one day! :D
What I love was the practical effects. You just know nowadays they’d use entirely CGI and it would look horrid
Magic,
Singing,
and Nazi's.
= a good movie.😜
Inglorious Bastards looks better than I thought.
Watch this every Christmas.
I loved this movie when I was a kid.
