The Salar de Uyuni, in the middle of the Andes in southern Bolivia, is the world's largest salt flat. It is the legacy of a prehistoric lake that dried up, leaving a desert landscape of nearly 11,000 square kilometers of bright white salt, rock formations, and cactus-covered islands. Its mystical expanse can be observed from the central Incahuasi island. Although fauna is scarce in this unique ecosystem, it is home to several pink flamingos.
Uyuni, Bolivia
In the Potosí Department, in southwestern Bolivia, the city of Uyuni emerges in the middle of the highland desert, with a history that begins in the late 19th century and is related to the importance of mining for the economy of that time.
Today, its main attraction is the Salar de Uyuni, around which everything revolves. It is the largest and highest salt desert on the planet. From the city of Uyuni, as well as from other points within Bolivia and even San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, daily tours allow visitors to explore this tourist attraction and other places in the Altiplano.
Laguna Colorada
Among the most striking places in the Bolivian Altiplano, besides the Salar de Uyuni, of course, is Laguna Colorada, a tourist attraction at over 4,000 meters above sea level that is also a breeding center for the Andean flamingo. It has a reddish color, a phenomenon present in other lagoons around the world such as Laguna Roja in Chile and Lake Hillier in Australia. However, it represents an experience that you might not be accustomed to and that is difficult to replicate.
Laguna Colorada can be visited through one of the tours to the Salar de Uyuni (weather permitting), as it is part of the itinerary for most of these tours, whether starting in Bolivia or Chile.
