    00:00 Intro
    1:38 What is hydroponics?
    4:43 Defining the problem
    6:02 System components overview
    10:42 Schematics and planning
    12:22 Getting the pump working
    16:54 Adding rotation
    20:05 Measuring the liquid level
22:40 Connecting to our IoT App Blynk
    28:54 Putting it all together
In this video lesson, we will walk through creating an automated DIY hydroponics garden that utilizes our Arduino programming skills and an Internet of Things (IoT) App called Blynk.
Hopefully, this walkthrough will give you some skills, and more importantly some inspiration, to create dozens of other cool IoT projects powered by Arduino.
Hold on, what the heck is an Arduino? A sub sandwich? And who is this IoT lady? If you’re asking yourself these questions, have no fear! We have some great videos on our TH-cam channel that introduce what Arduino is and its many uses, so check them out!
If you’re unfamiliar with the term Internet of Things (IoT), we also have a great IoT course for our members at Programming Electronics Academy that teaches all the essentials to get your projects up and running and connected to the cloud.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg! We’ve got 8 courses (and counting!) which cover everything from electronics fundamentals all the way to using LCDs and Servos in your projects.
If this is your first dip into the world of making and prototyping, welcome aboard! We’re so happy for you to have discovered this rich, intriguing world! You’re in the right place to start your Arduino adventures.
Hold on, what about aquaponics? Isn’t that the same thing as hydroponics? Not exactly. Aquaponics is the method of combining aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as fish) and hydroponics. Essentially, you use fish poop to add the required nutrients to your water solution and then you distribute that water to the plants, and then you utilize any of the nutrient distribution methods as previously mentioned.
WHY BUILD A DIY HYDROPONICS GARDEN?
Why should you build this project? Well, as we said before, we hope it will show you how cool Arduino is, and hopefully give you the inspiration and confidence to build many more projects other than just this garden. other microcontroller projects.
Additionally, growing your own food is:
Fun (and easy! Adding the Arduino to the traditional hydroponic set-up helps automate the process, so even the most unskilled gardeners can find success)
    Tastes great

Great stuff! I would like to do the more in-depth course for this for sure. I actually am working on something very similar, including rotation.I was thinking of including computer vision via an openmv h7 for tracking crops and allocating sunlight via rotation based on users harvesting trends. Also i was going to use a solenoid for auto-topup and a ec meter with peristaltic pump for auto dosing + a ph for balancing (i know you said its not needed so i will reconsider that). There was a lot of good idea here i would like to see more!

Great video! You should add a diode across the relay otherwise it will blow your arduino-pin because of the reverse current, when the relay releases. Or better a transistor between ardu-pin and relais.

Didn't he use a relay module? I'm guessing that diode comes built-in.

OMG I finally found the perfect video!!! I have a couple adafruit moisture sensors for automated watering (i'm trying to learn as an adult so the instructions at a childs level is perfect!) my husband and I actually made 2 hydro towers for the deck from this over 50 crafter!!! My issue is forgetting to check the water level one day and it's completely empty. I was curious how/what was the best water level sensor!! Hydro is so the way to go I have given up in soil based gardening in Colorado. it's just a waste of time.

Isn't it better to check the water level first?

Cool project. It covers everything I wanted to monitor for a system I'm designing. I would suggest using a PVC pipe and heat forming cup holders. This could be a lot faster and less material intense. 400 grams per grow section seems pretty wasteful to me.

At 32:07 it shows STAGE 2 code. Line 87 says: else if ( (state == 2) && (pumpState = "Off")).....
This code will run regardless of pumpState as it assigns instead of compares.
Should it not read: else if ((state == 2) && (pumpState == "Off")) ???
Or does the string library do things differently?
