  • Can smart gardens really grow delicious vegetables inside your apartment? WSJ asked Timothy Hammond, an urban gardener and educator in Houston, to test out Rise Gardens hydroponic smart garden to see how the vegetables compare with his own outdoor garden. Due respect, the app doesn't do the gardening for you. It reminds you of what needs doing and when. Many gardeners keep journals to do the same (including prolific gardeners like "founding fathers" Franklin and Jefferson...Washington. Indeed, they kept quite extensive records, so what's your beef with an app that reminds and lists tasks?

    I got to grow vegetables outdoors on my balcony last year for the first time and it was so exciting to see them grow and produce - and then devastating to see some lost to heatwaves and others to mites or even fungus, following a particularly humid week. Growing indoors in a more sterile environment, reducing or eliminating soil when possible, seems like a better option. The major negative for me then becomes 'light management'.

    What about the taste? Although they grew at different rates, and the varieties are probably different, does an indoor garden with artificial light affect the taste of the final product? Also for size, I'm imagining the smaller versions of the indoor unit aren't going to provide much once you harvest; in order to always have fresh greens available you'd need the larger unit to sustain constant growth and harvesting. The pods remind me of Keurig -- are they sustainable, or bad for the environment?

      I think with inflation now, you do have to take into consideration the costs of food. Rise claims a head of lettuce is $6 at the farmers market. Well here in San Francisco, it's $5, but you can grow the same head for $1.50 with seed, electricity, and nutrients. I think it comes down to how much you care about the quality of your food. Yes, I can go to grocery outlet, and buy a head of lettuce for 50 cents. Is it the same? No. I live in a house from the mid 20's, so we have lead in our soil. When that and the fog and cold weather half of the year, it's hard to grow much outdoors here. Lime trees and sometimes strawberries are about all you can grow. This allows me to grow things I could never imagine growing outdoors.

      Mostly agree. Although the DIY hydroponic systems you see are not exactly compatible with indoor decor. They have ugly PVC pipes and can have loud components. Good if you intend to maximize the harvest and the money invested, and plan to place it in your cellar or shed out of sight. Not so much if you're placing the garden in your living room or kitchen, where these kind of expensive systems come into play.

      That really depends on where you live and if you think the quality is the same. Yes, I can get a head of lettuce t grocery outlet for 50 cents, but it's $5 at our farmers market. The quality difference is night and day. If you think low quality produces at the same as high quality, then this isn't for you. The pods with the subscription are around $1 per pod. That's not really that bad with food prices today.

    Wow that was weak. 25 days isn't nearly enough. Maybe the outdoor plants started slower but would have out-produced the indoor ones? Very likely with many sun-loving plants. Then again, you're unlikely to get much in the way of pests inside since you're not using soil. This was just so incomplete.

    Ask any cannabis farmer, outdoor can't even compete with indoor. There is no competition when your'e able to completely control the environment.

    It's not the task for indoor gardens to beat ourdoor gardens. It's, especially in winter and autumn, there to be an add on. Or it is for people who don't own a real garden. What's there to "beat"? So your title is rather much click-baiting.

    No it can’t. I experimented with hydroponics. Costs too much to build. One led light alone costs $100-200. Sun light is free. Sprinkler system too expensive and maintain. Not worth it.

    • @frostystallie8736
      @frostystallie8736 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sun is free but doesn’t work 24/7. What kind of LEDs did you buy for $100+. The sprinkler system is pretty easy once it’s set up.

    • @danielx40
      @danielx40 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@frostystallie8736 the nozzles fails after a few weeks. Amazon sell those LEDs, and they are pretty pricy. Along with the water pump and timer. Just economically not worth it. I guess I can set up a TH-cam channel and start a “movement” and make some money off the hype. But not by growing stuff.
