  • Lisa Gade reviews the late 2013 MacBook Pro 13". This is Apple's second generation 13" Retina Mac laptop, with a lower price and new 4th generation Intel Haswell CPUs inside. The Mac starts at $1,299 and it has a 2560 x 1600 Retina gloss display with wide viewing angles and a wide color gamut. It runs on Intel mobile rather than ULT Ultrabook CPUs, so it has strong performance, yet it weighs just 3.46 lbs. and is 0.71" thick. It's available with dual Core i5 and i7 CPUs and all models have Intel Iris HD 5100 integrated graphics. You can order it with 4 to 16 gigs of DDR3L RAM, 128 to 512 gig SSDs (there's a 1TB option too), and all models have dual band 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and a backlit keyboard. It ships with Mac OS X Mavericks. Read our full written review here: www.mobiletechr...

      Has your comp slowed down since you got it to the point where u wish u would have gotten the 15 inch quad core?

    • @ihaveacoolhat1
      @ihaveacoolhat1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. While I do like the 15 inch, it's a bit too heavy and big for me.

    • @chicano135
      @chicano135 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Whitehead thanks. But I got the 15 highend version after all. It was on sale and I did like the extra screen size.. I got it for a really good deal .. and it's a beast, the computers now a days don't seem to slow down like in the past... like you said.

      Is there an specific reason why you chose 256Gb instead of 128Gb? I'm planning on using mine for basic stuff so I wonder if 128Gb is enough. And no I do not save a million pics/vids nor am I going to play games with it...

    I am sure someone else responded since it has been a month but as you know the late 2013 model does not have a disc reader. I believe the 2012 macbook pros were the last models with them. Apple is really encouraging (or forcing) it's users to go to downloadable installs and to use cloud services rather than physical media and software. Many Mac users have external disc readers that connect via USB but for $1400 that on the Macbook already, that can be tough to swallow. I personally haven't used a disc in years, I use cloud and SDXC cards but I understand your position. Checkout Amazon for external drives, you can find some fairly cheap. Are you and your wife enjoying them?

    When the turbo boost in the Air kicks in, the performance is pretty much the same as the 13 Retina

    • @Csta18
      @Csta18 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's one way to look at it. But the thing is, the processor has to be stressed out for it to work, and it doesn't stay like that forever either.

    Optical drives are a thing of the past as is downloading movies and music as streaming is taking over, yet I am still using my 2007 Black MacBook. You want an ultra book for roading get a chromebook as it's worth the price.

    • @jandan8184
      @jandan8184 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean by roading?

    • @brahsumatra
      @brahsumatra 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roading is slang for portable laptop on the road.

    • @brahsumatra
      @brahsumatra 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apple and more companies are not building laptops with them built in because everything is ether available for downloading or streaming, you can still buy external drives.

    • @awesomeOM7177
      @awesomeOM7177 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sam Edis That's not what he was saying. It's undeniable that dvd sales pale in comparison to digital download and streaming. The only reason they're not obsolete yet is because a lot of collectors value physical media and some people are still stuck in the past. It makes even less sense to have a dvd drive on a computer because you can download any software off the internet.

    Hello Lisa, I purchased the mid-range version with the i5 2.4 and 8G ram. Would it make a big difference in performance if I went to the higher range with the i5 2.6? How about the i7 if I custom order? Does the i7 impact battery life? I mostly use Aperture and some video editing using IMovie. I was thinking of going to the entry level 15" but I think I won't use it as much considering its the same weight as my 2008 aluminum which has the same weight. Thanks.

    Mac = design + simplicity + stability + better support + high quality components + longer life span + better OS + great battery life + Great software + Multi touch gestures + better security
    PC = Games + Umm... Games. -,-
    What do you think?

    • @crazychainsaw007
      @crazychainsaw007 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of that is opinion or has so many variables it doesnt matter
      design- you may like the design another may not
      longer life span- it depends and any computer can break at any moment and iv had macs last longer than a pc and iv had pcs last longer than macs
      software - opinion
      -better security that false sense of hope has gotten me virus on my old macbook
      better support- depends who you buy your pc from
      high quaility components- good quality laptops have good parts like a razer blade or aorus x7 (if you mean desktop than quality goes to pc because you are allowed to decide but thats not a fair point here)

    On paper, this is exactly the kind of machine that I want, but when I go to the store to see them in person, I prefer either the 13" Air or the 15" retinabook. It has neither the portability of the former nor the usability and UI comfort of the latter.

    • @kevinxucs
      @kevinxucs 11 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well, that's the point, it sits between air's portability and 15's performance.

    • @DanijelTurina973
      @DanijelTurina973 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, from the reviews I saw, I don't think it actually outperforms 13" Air, at least not by much. It's just thicker and has a better screen.

    • @ConquerCollin
      @ConquerCollin 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Danijel Turina I have the air and I'm thinking of upgrading to the pro. I filled up the 128gb on my air in just a few months, so make sure you get the 255gb. The air is a really fast and good computer, so it will do probably everything you need. The reason I want to upgrade is for the more memory and I figure I might as well just jump up for the retina and a little more power (that I don't feel I really need)

    • @DanijelTurina973
      @DanijelTurina973 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ConquerCollin I have a 2010 Air model with 256 gigs, and honestly, it's the best laptop I ever had, and I come from the IBM T40 series which was quite good. This thing looks underspec'd on paper but in reality, everything is fast and I'm immensely productive with it because I use a lot of shell scripts like I did on Linux - on a Windows machine I need to run a virtual Linux box which is not the most elegant way to run things.

    • @topografer
      @topografer 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Danijel Turina From what you say i would suggest the 13 air for you. You dont seem to need the power of the pro models and to be honest few people do. Get the super thin air which is a bit more portable and has crazy battery life. Who doesnt love battery life really.

    I have always pondered this although the decision is easy for me. Its quite subjective but my opinion is you can't get a better laptop, yes you will spend a bit more, but that is well worth a laptop that will last you years and years. Probably most students get them for many reasons: Some of the best, if not the best battery life out of any laptop, now screens that at retina that are incredibly crisp, extremely speedy(my 4 year old mac blows the doors of my PC in terms of everyday speed).

  • @PeterBarnesandjelly
    @PeterBarnesandjelly 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another point, if you take money out of the picture (which for apple products can be difficult) you are simply able to configure a more powerful pro and an air. Yes, you will spend much much more, but you still have all that power. There is also a 15" variant of the pro whereas the air only goes up to 13, however I have heard some rumors of a 15 inch air. Either way, it again all comes down to just weigh out your options

  • @PeterBarnesandjelly
    @PeterBarnesandjelly 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good points, but it really comes down to a couple points. How much will you benefit from the extra cpu power and/or retina display? The macbook air has a "gimped" haswell cpu while the pro has a full fledged mobile cpu, which is essentially a gimped version of the desktop cpu but I digress. The high resolution on the display also allows you to configure more workspace than the non retina. Ultimately, you just need to compare the features and ask yourself how they will benefit you.

    My question is since the newer MacBook Pro retina has come out the older version has gone on sale , is it the worth it to get the newer version then buying the older version for less... Excellent review! I went with the 8GB / 256 Flash and I love it! Did a student discount for $100.00 off. I've been old of college for 20 years. :) Thumbs way up!
    Thank you. Saved to my favorites.

    soldered memory so no DIY upgrade, no DVD-ROM, these are the reason why they still need the base 13" Macbook Pro, it's the last of the real Mac laptop that's dying off.

    This was the macbook i got after my late 2006 macbook died after 7 years. I've been an apple user since the Apple IIe however it's only been since the 90's i've had a mac in the home. I've enjoyed watching the progress of Apple over the years.. I have a background in TV production/ computer repair i also play the guitar. I have a usb blu-ray burner and half purchased MacGo blu-ray player for half price and blu-rays play nice with this computer, not much of a gamer i like the old style atari games more then current stuff so gaming reviews don't mean much to me. For my Media server I have turned to linux and a tower as a desktop/linux allows more tweaking then apple or os x does.. However since this video is about the matchbook pro and i have one of these i would say its a very nice portable machine.

    I currently own the mid 2012 MBP 13.3, 2.5GHz and love it. I have had no Performance Problems and have run Diablo 3 with no Problems at similar Settings. I'm just sad that they killed the DVD drive. Now if you must watch DVD's, you have to get the Superdrive or other external DVD Player.
    I must say that I too have noticed a heat difference when running Windows 7 through Bootcamp.

    Would you recommend 16GB RAM over 8GB for greater longevity? (I intend on using multiple displays, I do heavy web browsing, with usually a lot of random programs in the background - as I resume and sleep very often). I also do quite a lot of photo editing and uploads, so I'm thinking going for the 512GB over 256GB SSD(?). Thoughts? Thanks.

    I have a Mid 2012 non-retina macbookpro i7-2.9. 8gb ram, 128ssd. I am considering the new 13" retina version now but is the i5 2.6 as good as my existing i7? .. i typically use Creative Suite cs6 standard, Sibelius 7 and use iTunes a lot. Or would I be better of with an iMac ?
    Bearing in mind I use a 36mpx Nikon d800 camera.

    Found a used late 2013 retina Mac Book Pro 13 inch with crazy MAX spec (dual core 2.8Ghz Intel i7??? I thought i7 exclusively runs in the 15 inches? 16gb ram, 1TB ssd, cycle count 192) for $1000 is it worth it? Or should I just get a 15 inch for the same amount of money?

    I just think that for the price we should get a dedicated graphics. Why macs are so overpriced? This thing costs the equivalent of U$3,000 here in Brazil.

    Hey I'm planning to buy a Mac for college.. I game quite often and do my classworks, movies, music and browse the web.I have two options
    Macbook air i7 1.7ghz,4gb
    Macbook pro 2.4ghz i5,8gb
    I like the slight edge on iris graphics ..on the other hand I like the MBAs battery life.. I'm confused ..suggest me a good pick please...
    Regards....
    PS:I also heard the MBA overheats coz it lacks proper ventilation when choosing an i7 processor and also depletes the battery

    It's weird that I have the $1,599 model (8 gigs RAM, 256 SSD) and I play Diablo in max settings above 1080p. I didn't think RAM would make that much of a difference.

    First time apple owner. I got the 15" macbook pro with retina for me and the 13" for my wife. My question is what about a cd/dvd burner? I know I must be way behind here. : ) They haven't arrived yet, but I noticed there wasn't a disc insert slot. Okay, everybody laugh it up now.

    Listen guys and gals, whoever owns this laptop and is a victim of wifi problems, ping latency problems,bluetooth and wifi interference problem,etc. Please Read!
    Apple may or may not be working on a fix but we have spent at least $1000 of our hard earned money on an Apple laptop expecting greatness and this is what we get.I find it truly disgraceful that Apple won't even acknowledge their customers when there is a problem and worst won't admit their mistakes.If we want to be noticed we must do something about so please everyone who has this issue submit your complaints www.apple.com/feedback/ . Also if we really want to be noticed we can all "ping" www.apple.com during the use of our Macbooks and other Mac devices. The way to do so is the following command:
    ping -i 0.1 www.apple.com
    this will ping www.apple.com unlimited times until stopped with control + C or close terminal.
    If this is too much work to do every time you turn on your mac do the following:
    -Open Terminal then go to Terminal Preferences
    -Go to Settings then choose a Theme
    -Duplicate set Theme
    -Choose Shell
    -Checkmark Run Command under Startup and type in or paste the command above
    -And you are done everytime you Login/Turn on your Mac the Terminal will open and run this command indefinetly
    Not only will this perhaps annoy Apple, it will also help your connection problem as it won't allow the Network Adaptor to be put to sleep when the lid is closed and keeps the WiFi snappy.
    I hope this helped some of you and will help all of us with the problem to be noticed
    P.S Please do feel free to repost this in other threads/forums/blogs/etc.
    Realistically repost anywhere there are people with the same problems as in this thread and support forum.
