May I share a good remedy for arthritis? I am also a Veterinarian, only that I work with dairy cattle, and not small animals. But, I know a very effective remedy for this ailment. One tablespoon of freshly ground flax seed. It works like magic, and results are seen in a day or two. Mix with food, dogs love the taste. Give every day. Works especially good on old dogs. 1 tablespoon for a medium to large dog.

I started using castor oil for my own arthritis and tender spots and found it worked well and usually lasts several hours. If you've been using it for awhile, it works even better. Meanwhile nothing was really helping my old dog. So finally I did try rubbing castor onto his hips and back, massaging it through all that fur. He loved the application, and after a short while he was up and moving around much easier! He could lay down with his back legs under him, which he hadn't been able to do for a long time. I'm going to keep doing it with him for sure.

@@malgozata1875 For me, I just put some on my fingers and rub it onto the sore areas. I massage it just a little, and make sure I put some on any tender spots. It's good not only for joints and sore muscles, but areas that are inflamed and tender for other reasons. I do it whenever an area gets sore, no special schedule. Sometimes a couple of times a day, sometimes every couple of days.

I had horrible plantar fasciitis in both feet for years. The thing that really helped me was wearing my new hiking boots that I was breaking in to go hiking in the mountains in the summer. Well, that was the summer of 2020, so no hiking vacation for me. But I wore those boots every day for two years when I walked my dog or worked in the yard. I realized that first summer that my feet no longer hurt. So get a very supportive pair of shoes or boots! Your feet will thank you.

If I may, I'd like to add a couple of things...
Castor oil should preferably be organic, cold pressed and (important) hexane free.
For best results use it as a wrap with heat applied. First apply castor oil on skin, some people soak flannel and reheat it for more than one use. Next use a layer of plastic wrap. Next a towel... next the heat source, electric blanket, hot water bottle... another towel or blanket wrapped on top of that.
It really works, I tested it myself :)
Another use of castor oil... Dr Jones, what do you think of it used for cataracts?

My breed is prone to IVDD and at the first sign of limping, I actually use castor oil to reduce the inflammation that causes the discs to slip in the first place. That, and raw chicken wings for their high calcium/lower phosphorous ratio, because calcium intake also seems to play a role in it as well. Started doing this after a 3yr old dog died in horrific pain because the two vets I took her to failed to prescribe anti-inflammatory steroids >:/ This was somewhere around 2008, and I legit have not taken a dog to the vet for IVDD since then. It takes a few days sometimes, but the castor oil always does the trick.

My dog was limping since yesterday, I checked his pads for something that got stuck in there but couldn't see anything so I think maybe it could be a bit of arthritis, luckily I had castor oil in my magic stash of herbal remedies, I didn't know you could use that on dogs, thank you so much for all of your educational videos.

Can you discuss knee joints in dogs. I have an 11yr old shepherd and 7 beagle both with knee pain and a 4 yr old chihuahua who’s joint goes in and out with no pain now. What’s the outlook. I thought hips would be more common but it’s the knees in our dog family.

I have 8 year old beagle and she also have arthritis. Last few months she always cry for pains and can’t sleep properly. The vet recommends to buy cetyl M tablets for 6 weeks, which i only gave her half of the prescription because it is very expensive and also vitamin b complex for dogs. Now my dog only taking vitamin b complex and is now doing fine. Thank you Dr J. for recommending this because i have castor oil here and i will try it in my beagle. Sending 💗

So, would this be useful on osteoarthritis in the SI joint? It seems kinda hard to believe that it would be able to work its way in between the bones.
I've had a nerve ablation on my right SI area, and will have another nerve ablation on my left SI area... and possibly another one on my tight side because it shows some indications that the nerve is regrowing.

My mostly malinois guy has become an old man of 12 with sore hips and back legs - so sad! I'm trying various things to see if I can keep him lively. I like DMSO, but it's kind of rough on human skin full strength - not sure if he'd feel it through all that thick fur of his, though. Castor oil would really gum up his fur. I'm going to try DMSO and this flax seed idea. I have arthritis in my thumb joints and some other spots - I rubbed some castor oil on my sore spots, and it definitely helped. But I don't have the thick fur 🙂

My little Yorkie/Chihuahua was attacked and torn apart by a dog. It is a miracle she survived. Because she was stitched back up on her right shoulder, she has very little flesh there. She is fourteen now and limps quite badly on her right front leg. I massage her shoulder with castor oil, she loves being massaged. I think the castor oil helps with the stiffness.

Wow! I will try it on my finger joints (I have erosive osteoarthritis that flares up and is gradually enlarging and stiffening my distal phalanges especially my left hand). My older dog has arthritis and I have him now on the krill oil capsules, fresh flax seed oil, and Cosequin and Carprovet. He still has some weakness, but I have little knowledge as to if he is in pain. I might rub some castor oil on his hips or joints if he looks as if he has had too much jumping and looks weak, and/or in pain? I have not tried castor oil. Thanks for the tip! 🤗

    • @VeterinarySecrets
      @VeterinarySecrets  3 ปีที่แล้ว

You can use either krill or flaxseed. Or use them alternately? Adding both may cause diarrhea? You should consider adding curcumin to the list.
